One of the best love stories I’ve ever seen. Such a beautiful episode.

Like my favorite three love stories in order. Barely coming ahead. Moulin rouge. This and seeking a friend for the end of the world.

There had better be some Emmy nominations -- acting, writing, directing -- for this episode alone. What a powerful piece of television. Great reactions, guys!

I too watched this episode with my mother, who's in her late 60s. Unfortunately instead of being moved by the performance she was shaking her head because the story revolved around 2 men. You're a lucky guy to have a mom who's accepting.

My father is a homophobe, he at first wanted to skip the episode, and of course he didn't like the sex scene but he gave it a shot anyway cause my mother wanted to keep watching. When i tell you he CRIED his ass out at the ending, he said it was one of the most beautiful stories he had seen in the TV and he said that he would totally watch it again.

The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous. Dolls, children, children with dolls, dolls that look like children, all manner of seemingly harmless and familiar things, all trying to kill you. We expect that any kindness will be answered with violence, that any trust met with betrayal. We as an audience have been primed to fear the most faithful of friends, the most reliable family members - especially in this particular genre of horror - and when we encounter a story about caring and commitment amongst the ruins of a dying world, we don't know how to process it and it hits hard. "I was not expecting this" seems to be the most common refrain, with good reason. This is ostensibly a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a kindred soul to a mortal threat in an instant and no one is to be trusted, especially other humans. Yet this particular tale is about trust, and love, both matrimonial and romantic. It's about allowing oneself to be vulnerable and in that vulnerability, finding those moments of existence that are both ephemeral and priceless. We expect a calamity, a personal buskin beyond the destruction of our civilization. We anticipate a type of misfortune that doesn't occur. During the worst catastrophe in the history of human kind, we bear witness the best thing to ever happen to these two humans, and it's profound; jarring. We await a devastation that never comes to pass; that expectation of tragedy is subverted by a story of love. We expect blood and destruction; what we get is a masterpiece about small, beautiful lives lived less ordinary. This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion, and it's based on a video game; we've come a long way from Pong.

It took me seeing some reactions to realize the purpose of the radio message being "Danger" triggering. That was Bill essentially leaving a message for Joel and Tess to come "help", but when they got there they'd find all the weapons and things they ever needed to protect themselves. It's Bill leaving behind for his "friends" what he could. If you read on the note it tells Joel which wine to use and etc with Tess. So he's basically telling Joel to give it a chance with Tess, stay there, and keep her safe. But it's too late, Tess is gone. And when Joel comes in, the door slams shut. Bill can finally go knowing Joel got there.

Joel explained why the music was playing though. He said if Bill didn't reset the countdown every few weeks, the playlist would run over the radio. That meant Bill and Frank had likely already been dead for several weeks when Joel, Tess, and Ellie left Boston. Bill didn't intentionally send that song at the end of episode 1.
@Saphthings
@Saphthings Год назад
@@littleekellyy It means he literally had it set up that way so that if there was ever danger, and he couldn't get to it, Tess and Joel might come to help Frank. But by not turning that off, and writing a letter, he purposefully and intentionally let that song be sent in a few weeks so that Joel would come, like I said. and when he got there he'd have the place, weapons, anything needed. And then in his letter he tells Joel what kind of wine to give her and everything. Giving him dating tips lol

I think it's a great "translation" from game to television. Having a cranky survivalist help you in the game is fun and all, but this adds depth and feels so realistic. Bill saves and protects Frank, but Frank does the same in his own way by giving them purpose beyond just surviving.

18:11 One of the few reactors ,if any, who knew this song from Arrival. Bravo. Also, if i remember correctly from ST, given your own disability... seeing your mom react more to Frank's wheelchair ms condition was poignant reminder how much she loves her son.

Must have misunderstood something we said. We do have someone in our lives with a disability, but not me. Thanks for the sentiment, though! ;)

Bill's house has the same structure as Dina and Ellie's house in TLOU2. I'm still contemplating if it's just a coincidence or an intentional detail from Naughty Dog. God damn it.

No matter how many times I see this episode I always get choked up. And it doesn't matter if I am watching the episode or watching reactors like yourself. It is a sweet touching episode and a little unexpected but sweet. It just goes to show you there is always someone for all of us no matter the situation in life.

No, the plan was to hand Ellie over to Bill and Frank. That's what Tess wanted. Joel moves from one wish to another so far. Superficially, Ellie plays no role for Joel, she is just cargo. He wants to get rid of her. Only his sense of duty drives him. First it was Marlene's order and to find his brother, then Tess's last wish to bring her to Bill. And now that he can't dump her there anymore and Bill reminds him of his duty to do his job, Joel brings her to Tommy.
