This episode hit me really, really hard. It's been a long time since an episode of any TV show has made me that emotional. The acting from Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman is absolutely top tier. Their love story was beautiful and I love that they got to go out on their own terms - something not afforded to many in a post-apocalyptic world.

A masterpiece of an episode from start to finish. The acting, the dialogue, the pacing, the music, the cinematography, perfection. The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've all been conditioned to fear everything, especially the familial, especially in modern storytelling, so when we encounter a story about love and trust and commitment, we don't know how to process it. This is one of the best stories ever told on film.

I was just a puddle of emotions watching this episode. Equal parts devastating and beautiful - reminds me of the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror. Just a self-contained, fantastically written, phenomenally acted (Nick Offerman was perfectly cast, but Murray Bartlett kinda blew my mind, especially near the end of the episode) episode of television. And it gave us more Tess! We can never have enough Ana Torv
@YukonBloamie
@YukonBloamie Год назад
I was so excited for this episode because it seemed it was going to be the biggest divergence from the game because Joel never met Frank in the game but we knew from episode one that he and Tess know him. But I was not expecting this little masterpiece. SPOILERS>>>>>> Bills town had some of the most memorable moments in the game: The upside-down booby trap, your first encounter with a Bloater, compression starting the truck while under attack, the "Bye bye, Dude!" moment in the truck, and of course finding Frank's body and the note. But the point of Bill was to contrast how a serious survivalist acts compared to Joel the player. Bill will die alone and it's kind of sad and we don't really want that for Joel ultimately. It's subtle like all of Naughty Dog's storytelling but it's there on reflection. Compare to what they did in the show Bill and Frank are also there to contrast with Joel but in this case to show that a happy life could happen in the end times. Also, Bill's note basically echoes what Tess said to Joel about "save who you can save", and it's clear how they are setting up Joel's character.

Ellie shows us her love for astronomy. The car was a spaceship and in episode 2 it was the crater of a bomb impact that she compared to the moon. When she said "so cool" to the seat belt, it sounded exactly like her "so cool" when she sat in the space capsule in Part 2. The moment Joel changed his perspective in the game and in the series was the moment he met Bill. The fundamental difference between game and series is that Bill's advice was driven by a negative thought in the series and a positive one in the series.

@@JD-df3zl what a bigoted comment. It's beautiful because it shows what love looks like in a horrible world. That a lonely, closeted person can find someone to fight for. It's a story that's needed, because in apocalypse shows/movies the focus is surviving - this episode showed that it's not enough to survive, you have to LIVE. It was also beautiful seeing two people being together for so long, the small bickerings and things you have with your spouse. It's also a parallel to Joel. In the game, Bill was alone and bitter, and it served Joel a cautionary tale that if you don't open yourself up, you will stay bitter and alone. This episode however, showed that having someone to fight for, care for and love is more important than anything - hence why Joel regrets that he never opened up fully to Tess, but can now do that with Ellie. And yes, it was also very fucking nice to have some good lgbt representation. I would recommend you listen to the HBO podcast where the showrunners talk about this episode. Open your heart up, man. Show some love.

First, of all the memorable comments made to this episode, I believe: "Frank, you're as ballzy as the next door infected." ...is unique... and I loved it. More than that though I really love the deep emotional appreciation shown here for the Bill and Frank story. - I do want to make an observation about the game references. I disagree with the premise that the show is subordinate to any... anything. I'm a 64-year-old technical professional who never found any affinity for video games and was totally unaware of TLOU as a game before the TV series dropped. I absolutely LOVE this TV SERIES! IMHO, the story presented, the production, the acting, but primarily the extraordinary writing positions this as one of the best TV series of the last 10 years! This series is brilliant when you don't know the game play ahead of time.

The only difference between game and show Bill and Frank is what they do at that fight outside when Frank wants to have friends. They both open themselves a bit, and compromise. Bill lets him at least make a friend, see more of the city. Frank accepts that that can only be it, too dangerous to go further, invite more people. And in the surrendering to each others way of loving, they found the difference between surviving and living. In the game Bill says no, absolutely not. Frank feels imprisoned, grows resent, and eventually they fight and he leaves, gets bitten, and hangs himself to prevent himself from turning. Leaving an angry letter to Frank, which when Frank sees he swallows his tears and says, "well then fuck him". Leading Bill to a cold lonely empty life left where he's bitter and grumpy. In the game Bill's actions serve to show Joel the danger of what he can become if he doesn't open up, if he doesn't look for living instead of just surviving. In the show Bill and Frank become an example of what he could have if he opens up. He already missed his chance with Tess, but maybe he can be a father again to Ellie. It's the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living. Bill and Frank gave the same lesson, just the opposite side of the same coin. Bill taught Frank how to survive, Frank taught Bill how to live.

The story is beautiful, incredibly well told and acted, but I could feel Nick Offerman's straightness, I couldn't say exactly what it was about his acting, it just drew me out a little bit. It means that Frank probably drank enough to kill an elephant. Make sense that Bill probably stayed up longer than Frank to write the will/letter for Joel.
