The outbreak was facillitated through contaminated food. During the breakfast scene, the radio talks about incidents in Jakarta, Indonesia which happens to be the largest flour distributor in the world. Joel and Sarah never became infected because they avoided grain and flour. They didn't have pancake mix in the morning, They refused the biscuits because Joel is on the Atkins diet, Sarah didn't eat the raisin cookies, and Joel forgot his birthday cake. Insane level of detail.

Man, that she skipped the intro was BRUTAL! I am an huge fan of the game and to hear that music again is just nostalgia!

The fungus infection is based on a real life fungus that infects ants as explained in the intro. In the show, the fungus mutated to be able to infect humans, likely in Jakarta, the place Joel, Sarah and Tommy discuss, after hearing about "riots" there. Jakarta is one of the largest manufacturers of flour and it's likely that that's how the infection is spread to the rest of the world. This is especially notable if you think about how Joel and Sarah keep avoiding eating anything with flour for the entire episode. They were supposed to have pancakes, but Joel forgot to buy the pancake mix. Joel and Sarah declines the offer of biscuits from their neighbors, before heading out in the morning. Joel is on Atkins, which is a restrictive diet where avoiding flour is a high priority. Sarah decides not to eat the cookies, once she realizes they are made with raisins rather than chocolate chips. Joel forgets to bring a birthday cake back with him after work.

I've tried watching so many different channels reacting to TLOU, and you're the best BY FAR. Firstly, you got the perfect combo: a person that played the game and a person that didn't, having both reactions is golden. Also, you add commentary but without being over the top or distracting yourselves or each other with your commentary. It was just great overall. I'm excited for your future reactions!

Sarah's scene... I've seen that scene years ago,made me cry years ago, And it still extremely hurts,I can't.....

I could literally watch Sarah's death a million times and cry every single time.

i absolutely loved they added that talk with the epidemiologists in the beginning. it certainly makes us feel worried and uneased, and adds a new layer of hopelessness to the series. i loved all the changes they did with the show, especially seeing sarah's daily routine which made us connect to her character more and see the world building around her, during z-day. they made it so similar to the game, but with just enough differences in it that makes us - veteran tlou players - have things to look forward to and it spikes our curiosity to keep watching and see how they handle the story and new plot lines. the show has my trust as neil himself co-wrote it and judging by chernobyl, craig mazin has't missed yet. this was SO good. can't wait for next sunday.

Its cool that you guys are doing reactions to other shows that are not anime. After this I would recommend you watch Chernobyl, its a great mini-series that follows the disaster of Chernobyl that happened back in 1986.

In the game you can find a newspaper talking about food being contaminated. I've seen comments mentioning flour, throughout the intro Sarah and Joel don't eat any food with flour in it: pancakes, biscuits, cookies, and cake. Good thing Joel declined the biscuits and Sarah disliked raisin cookies.

Did you all hear the theory of the fungus coming from spoiled flour? No pancakes, no cake, the guy was feeding the grandma biscuits, Joel is on the Atkins diet, Sarah didn't take the cookies, and so on and so on. Also Indonesia is a top grain producing country. Kind of neat

I loved this premiere episode. It really keeps to the game and give little nods here and there, it so good and sets the entire tone for the series well. So happy you guys are reacting to it, might watch the full reaction with you on patreon later when I've got a bit more time. The opening was great, I loved seeing that interview, it made me feel super uneasy especially since it hits a little too close to home, rising temps, *cough*covid*cough*. I loved how they added that little flashback of Sarah, making Joe see red with the FEDRA soldier, really added some depth as to why he's so fucked up and violent, also allowing us to see his motives more, we didn't get that in the game because its you, the player, your actions and it makes you feel it that way, cant do that with series so I'm interested to see them add in little details to make us invested in Joel, even though we already are. Love the addition of the original soundtrack, as its perfect and iconic, you need that, I hate it when game adaptions change it for some dumb reason. Plus I love all the side by side comparison screenshots that people have shared on twitter and stuff, just seeing how much care they put into this is so sublime, I'm all in.

Actually so hyped you guys are reacting to this one!

Yes, I’m a filmmaker student and i loved TLOU2. In my opinion it beats part one in every aspects except pacing and you could argue on storytelling but everything else goes to Part 2. GOTY and most awarded game of all time for a reason. I love it. I like a lot of the changes they did with the show. For example, the spores are not in this and they went with the original concept art before the spores called “the tendrils”. Realistically all the spores would be in the air so everyone would be dead or the infected would run out of spores, and they wouldn’t be just in some zones. Realistically they would still have spores in the hair and clothes, it would be impossible so I love it this way more because it’s more realistic and TLOU is very grounded and realistic, so it makes more sense like this and also the tendrils makes the infected EVEN MORE creepy and show how all of them are connected so I love it. "There's things that work in the game that would just not work in the show," Druckmann. And how the infection works. In the game it takes like two days to turn, in here like they showed in the scene with the little boy in the sign if you get bitten in the leg being the farthest part to the brain it takes a lot of hours or a day so it makes more sense, then torso, shoulders and hands, it takes some hours and then head it takes minutes and that makes it even more scarier, I love it. The plane scene is WAY better in my opinion, is more tense and more cinematic so I like this more than just the car crash. Like even smaller change like the guy that shot Sarah saying “I’m sorry” is an improvement. It’s shows he is just following orders and didn’t wanted to do it. Amazing. And one scene that I like way more in the show than in the game is when Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught and Joel puts himself in front of Ellie and then have PTSD with Sarah, THAT scene for me was way better and I love it. I love all the new scenes we got, everyone in the cast is perfect, and the scene after Joel, Ellie and Tess gets caught I love how Joel had PTSD, it made the scene more emotional and I liked it better in the show. And about the public execution this may be sound harsh but I get it. They have to put order and fear, if people leave and get out whenever they want and even only one gets infected and one of them goes back inside the quarantine zone they could all get infected, it’s harsh but I get it. By far the most faithful live action adaptation and with only the first 30m of the episode it was the best adaptation. Amazing pilot episode! 10/10 I love it.

Love this! Super excited to see the fresh perspective from Carlie to just the show and Ange giving us some cool commentary from the game and adaptation as well. I'm also very excited to see VAs from the game pop up in the show. We know from the trailer that we'll get a brief look at Ellie's mom played by Ashley Johnson who voices and does the motion capture for Ellie in the game. Very exciting because in a way Ashley did kind of give birth to Ellie because its literally her mannerisms and voice all through the two games.

Pretty cool how they translated the game and kept it very close while also giving us something different.

I think a line here that really goes unnoticed is in the car when Sarah asks if it was a Terrorist attack. Considering that this now takes place in September, only two years after the attacks. Thinking about it now, it’s really an insane line because it shows just how confused they are, same as they were during the attacks.
