The fungus parasite is what this is And fungus naturally doesn't thrive in uv light and chooses moist dark places to form so it won't dry out and die. It was a cool touch to the show

Btw when they were walking to the state building you can actually get a glimpse of tess's bite mark when she looks back at joel.

okay so to answer your question with no spoilers for the future, in the first episode the battery joel and tess were after from robert (the one terrified of joel) was corroded and dead, but robert was still trying to sell it twice to them and to the firefly's trying to get double the profits, so once the firefly's found out it was a dud there was a shootout between the firefly's and roberts men over it which is why her ear was messed up and marlene was hurt plus there was roberts body and a few others in the halls. And some info on the infected that we have seen so far, we have seen the runners (back in 2003 like nana) that can hear and see (because the body is fresher) But the one in this episode with a head like a busted mushroom can hear things but it can't see, that screeching bending forwards thing is it using echolocation in the direction its facing in order to "see" what's ahead of it, that thing is called a clicker for obvious reasons. oh and in episode one there was a sign that tells us how long it takes for the infection to take over depending on where it is, so for the neck face and head 5-15 minutes, torso arms shoulder and hands 2-8 hours, leg and foot 12-24 hours. Ellies had said she was bitten over 3 weeks ago and on her arm just sayin

The first two opening scenes are so great at showing how dangerous this fungus would be because we literally have no defense against it. I feel like this is proven even more when all the reactors I watch still refer to cordyceps as a virus even when the show tells us the difference twice because we’re so conditioned to think of pandemics in terms of viral infections. We are so screwed if this ever happens 😅

39:43 there is a poster in the first episode that tells you how long it can take someone too turn based on where the bite area is. Legs or feet take 12-24 hours. Arms, Torso, Shoulder or Hand takes 2-8 hours and Neck, Face or Head bites turns you in 5 to 15 minutes!! It does its job with Maximum Efficiency too say the least. 😔

In the first episode in the beginning the radio is on a Joel says Jakarta is in Asia and Sarah says no it’s the capital of Indonesia. The radio was talking about where it started at the flour and yeast plant there. It intertwines the two episodes. Also Joel and Sarah dodge bullets in the first episode by not eating the biscuits, Joel says he’s on adkins which gives up flour in your diet. Them being out of pancake mix and not eating the cookies cuz they were raisins. Then Joel not picking up the cake. Also in this episode when Ellie eats her sandwich with bread cuz she’s immune while Tess and Joel can’t.

Except I think the bread on Ellie's sandwich is safe. I mean this is 20 years after the outbreak, why would they even keep making bread if it was lethal? Either they have found a safer grain to make it from (entirely possible) or that was just a big continuity error in the series which seems less likely.

The reason why the doctor in the flashback said to bomb the city and everyone in it was because it was far too late for containment. With 14 unaccounted for infected infecting everyone in sight and no way to track them, it was impossible to tell the infected from the uninfected. Any attempt to tell the difference would have only given the fungus more time to spread. She was being pragmatic because at this point bombing the city and everyone in it was the only way to slow the spread of the infection, which would buy the uninfected more time to come up with a more viable solution.

The woman playing Tess is Anna Torv. She is a niece of Rupert Murdoch. A few years back she was the lead actress in a sci-fi show called Fringe. Her character and her team would investigate strange occurrences and phenomena. It was low key supposed to be an unofficial sequel to the X-Files. It has a lot of plotlines that were trippy and explored the fringes of science.

Since u asked in the first episode fireflies were taken out by Robert's guy. Since Marlene rejected the battery since it was bad Robert's guy started shooting . And evryone ended up being dead. Also the veins called tendrils. And the hive mind thing is also real it's the fungii called mycelian

3:48 The fungus is real but in real life only takes over ants. As shown in the opening scenes, the human body is too hot for this type of fungus to survive. Other types of fungus can survive on or in the human body though. Someone on the last reaction said the fungus can take over the minds of other species but I highly doubt that.

Also, as you can see are diffrent stages to the infected, how much the funugus grow. The ones that coulnd't see are called clickers and have a reinforced head cause of the fungus that overgrown their head !

One of the main changes in the whole series is tendrils instead of spores. In the game the air in buildings can be toxic cause of the fungus. But they changes this to not have a bunch of screentime with characters in gas masks, really good deccision.

I didn't catch it on my first watch but the infected woman worked at a flour mill, to which the doctor said "a perfect substrate". Probably why she was basically accepting that it was all over, she knew it couldn't be contained. So far, pretty close to the game minus a few small changes here and there. The "hive mind tendrils" thing was thought up for the show. The game had sections filled with spores, but they weren't quite sure how that would work on the show, so they went this route, so it's an interesting change. We also don't get as much back story into the infection itself in the game, it just happens.

All opening scenes are addiction to the story, but they really nailed it. Hopefully they keep it up. Other than that it's super close to the game. They make small changes, but I love that, so it does not feel super reppetetive for the ones that played the game.

As someone who played the game quite a few times (that's an understatement), the easiest, non-spoilery way to explain the similarities between the game and the show like you mentioned at the 2 minute mark is this: The show, seemingly, has taken the story of the game, and fleshed out the world and what happens between characters behind the scenes. TV shows have the luxury of building a narrative a certain way episode-by-episode, and/or season-by-season, whereas most video games usually don't have the luxury of time, otherwise there would be a lot of times where you're just sitting there and not actually playing the game, which would be no fun. However, there's benefits to that, because while some video games allow you to do side-quests, and explore and loot for collectibles or whatever, they also HAVE TO get straight to the point because they have a story to tell at the end of the day.. In terms of accuracy though, I'd give it a 9.5/10. Glad you're enjoying the show though. If the show keeps going like this, then it's going to be phenomenal.

Another advantage of a TV series: A video game is entirely from the perspective of the player. In a TV series, they can move the action and show things from a different perspective such as the story in Jakarta or what people say/do when Joel and Ellie aren't in the room. This gives them more opportunities for world building.

It’s not like they just have this fungus lying around in a lab somewhere. It’s in nature. It’s not quite within our capacity to fully eliminate an entire species of fungi from the world, we can’t even get to net zero emissions, let alone eradicate several species of fungus from across the planet. 😂

Indonesia has the largest flour milling industry and exports across the world. Grain is a great way to spread fungus and has poisoned thousands thru toxic mold throughout history. That is how it spread across the world so fast. I think people with weaken immune systems got it first, such as the old lady eating biscuits and the school kid with the medical ID bracelet shown in the first episode. Just my theory.

It would be considered an honor and privilege to contribute. Plus had this not been a doomsday scenario, I’m sure the doctor could have talked her way into a nice consulting gig for the government. I havent had a gaming console in years. Many years. I discovered game play through channels on youtube. I only watched about four or five games plays start to finish. This game although never played myself, the game is equal parts emotional story as we are watching in the show. And at times high stress blink and you miss it action and clues. There are some wonderful little side stories if you take the care to read the environment in the game. I think thats how it got popular. Its just a great story wrapped in a sweet action game. Regardless of gaming style there is something for everyone. Slow plodders that loot and look at everything, maybe frustrating for those that just want to ground and pound there way through the game. Even still the story is so strong and even in game play the characters play easy off each other. First game i liked best. The second forces you into another character at times I had no initial interest in. But a recommended game. Your face is only a little puffy. The beard hides some i am sure. Your lucky i could not eat normal for three weeks after my wisdom teeth came out. And my poor face swoll like i swallowed a nerf football sideways.

I've heard that the fungus is spread through flour and baked goods. Jakarta has one of the world's biggest flour mills. So its exports go to practically everywhere run that region. By the time they found out it was probably much much to late to stop it.

@@Ld.801 Indonesia doesn’t have nuclear weapons and it’s Air Force is 23 times smaller than the US Air Force. They would have had to call in a nuclear strike from the US or China. By the time that happened it would have still been too late. As you can see in this episode trying to use conventional bombs in America to slow the infection was moderately successful. But that’s even with our considerable air power on hand.

This show is so great. Its almost accurate to the show. The only difference in this episode to the original game is that when Tess gets bitten and dies, she doesn't die from a infected, she dies from Fedra arriving and killing her. So her death is nowhere near as traumatizing as the show. It also links in with the Fungus vines because the fungus vines cause all the infected to come and kill Tess but in the game fungus doesn't spread through vines they spread through spores but they changed it for the show to make it more realistic.I really hope this doesn't spoil anything because I am talking bout the game not the series. Also the game and series are telling the same story just with some small changes like Tess's death.

the game and show are extremely similar in all the important ways but of course the show is more realistic being that we can't just craft health kits and molotov's on the fly during a fight and just other stuff like that in general, you will see. 😅

yes, this can really happen. ophiocordyceps would have to go through a lot of evolution in order to control brains and nervous systems as complex as ours, a big jump between ant and human brains. however, that’s the only unrealistic part. if it were to do that, and it very well can, it would be about as bad as it is shown here. the scary shit is that there is barely much exaggeration in the portrayal of this fungus. nature is fucked up man these mushrooms and microscopic squiggly lines are the real opps💀💀💀
