I will be honest I was hating on the cast in the beginning but this scene really changed my mind, the girl playing Sarah had one of the most realistic getting shot/ death reactions. I felt a lump in my throat, amazing acting overall
I found the pain she felt when Joel was trying to lift her up was eerily realistic. Like of course folding or putting your own pressure on a wound would hurt an immense amount
Yup same. Typically when I see them recasting races, it's (in my opinion) *typically* a sign that they want to start doing some kind of social commentary rather than focus on the show and making sure it's entertaining, though I try to not react too harshly or stop from seeing it because there are absolutely people who are another race than the character they're portraying was initially like Samuel L. Jackson, Idris Elba, who just NAIL the personality/character traits of the person they're acting, and I would take that 10000% of the time than making sure that everyone is the "correct race". In a perfect world, any character can be replaced by any gender/race/etc just because anyone can have those character traits/personality and anyone who can do it and be believable should be given the role. Nico did at least on par, if not better than the original just from showing the fear of dying in her eyes/breathing to the painful noises and her shaking her head not wanting to be picked up. Even though it was a very short role, I think they definitely picked the best from the pool of actresses that tried out for it (and to anyone who's still complaining "He's Latino and she's Black, it doesn't make sense" there's a bunch of dark skinned/black latinos all over the Americas, not to mention, she could have a black/black-latina mother which could easily have a light-skinned, black child....use your brain for once).
Pedro was asked why he chooses to play fathers so much, and why he's so good at it. He said that he always wanted to be a father, but there are things in his life that don't allow him - so he gets to live out his fantasy of being a dad in his roles.
@@robsdianten1 In several articles relating to Mandalorian and The Last of Us. When asked about being so good at dad roles, he gets to play out his paternal instincts that he can't fulfill with a child of his own.
It's the same in the game and it's a brillant choice from both directors because how gutwrenchingly raw it is. Sarah's last visual was probably her panicking, screaming dad *looking away from her*. Same for Joel - his daughter's last words weren't words at all, but pained wheezing and screaming. There's no goodbyes in this new world Joel gets thrown in - it is brutal and so is the game/show.
It’s so fucking sad man because he noticed it first and what can he realistically do at that point his niece and brother just got shot right infront of him and he just killed another human he was just as helpless as Joel that’s what’s so scary about a complete collapse in society you can’t count on EMS, Fireman, Police, or even the military in this case
I’ve been saying from the start that that’s a good thing. If they play the games, they can’t make the characters their own because they’ll have a cognitive bias of how they “should” act the scene. They’ll be recreating scenes instead of acting what to them are original scenes, and you’ll have worse performances as a result of trying to recreate someone else’s. As long as the writers stay true, having the actors and actresses go in blind creates more believable characters.
@GrippeeTV I forgot if it was Neil or Craig, but in the podcast one of them said something along these lines to Troy, "If he watches the game, the best take he can give us is a bad impression of your performance."
Absolutely amazing job they're doing. This is as good as acting gets I reckon and they're, blindly, doing the last of us so proud. Wish resident evil would do the games proud like this but never happens unfortunately 😔
Ya are buggin his acting is nothing compared to Troy bakers Joel I cringed at how poorly acted this scene was not on Sarah’s side but Joel’s side I don’t mind the acting being mediocre but don’t praise and say it’s top tier like the game actually was bc it definitely wasn’t.
I think the scene is actually done even more well here - Sarah's realistic reaction to being shot (hyperventilation etc) is even more horrifyingly true to life than the scene in the game. The panic and fear of someone dying in moments is also (even more) authentic. It is a tough scene to watch, but is probably one of the most realistic depictions in a visual medium.
@@Sunnysideup420she's more reactive to her injuries in the show, you can hear her pain everytime Joel touches her. In the game she just cries which makes sense since she's younger that the show's.
It captures the feeling of real traumatic events better, but I felt the game vocal actress captured the innocent child better with her high pitched squeals, which to me made it more heartwrenching. For me the game hit harder and made me cry, while the show scene triggered me and made me feel numb. Both were equally powerful in their own ways
I like how they handled this. In the game, before the shot, it was, "But sir.. There's a little girl." ANd in the show, "I'm sorry," after the shot. Both did a good job of showing the reluctance of a faceless, uncredited soldier. Both of them did a fantastic job in a few words of portraying how rough the situation is, how desperate everyone was. I am so hopeful for the show for staying so close, despite differences, to the source material. Hopefully this keeps up. And holy shit, the addition of Joel's plea to Tommy... What an amazing job they did. Please HBO. PLEASE continue to do justice to this amazing story.
I personally like most of the changes, including changing it from spores to tendrils. My favorite difference between the game and show is when Joel and Tess, Ellie is confronted by the federa agent and Joel's PTSD of Sarah's death kicks in and he beats the agent to fucking death
The only reason the soldier didnt say that in the show is because they cant show a US military commander giving orders to kill a child. A scene that would stir so much negative emotion towards the US military is a no go. Its not a problem though if its an individual acting alone.
@@Pestbringer89 What could possibly make you think that? There are endless examples of fiction mirroring real life showing the US military to be evil. This was a creative choice, nothing more
It felt like losing Sarah for the first time all over again. To experience this on PS3, then PS4, then PS5, and now HBO. AND still have it hit me harder than ever. Bravo.
A detail I really like is that Tommy was a veteran of the Gulf War. In the part where Joel called for his help, Tommy knew that a shot to the stomach, especially for a teenage girl like Sarah? He knew that there was nothing they can do. Even if Sarah was alive for a single moment, Tommy knew that she has no chance. And that’s just tragic.
Yeah getting shot two or three times with a rifle in the chest is hardly survivable even in the best circumstances, if you hit no vital organs and have a hospital right next to you. You don’t survive something like that
I don't understand the hate for the cast I always thought Pedro and Bella suited the roles perfectly 🤷 they are doing such a amazing job with the chemistry between Joel and Ellie fanstastic
I gotta be honest, despite the great casting, I didn’t believe HBO could recreate how sad Sarah’s death was in the show. I’m glad I was wrong. The actress did a great job.
@@coolzog I don't know. It might just be because it's new and i'm so insanely happy the show is so goddamn good. But that"TOMMY HELP ME" beats everything! Anyway both game & show scenes Are brilliant! That's what matters. I'm so glad the entire TLOU universe remains unspoiled. Neil would not let that happen.
Im gonna be honest- and i know damn well imma get hated- but i actually rather the beginning of Last of us (SHOW) then Last of us (GAME) i probably like it cause it really does show character lives before the plague- really felt sweet tbh- and for Sarah death- i was expecting a Shriek- just like the game- but the fact there wasn't was- actually really more hurtful ngl-
The soldier saying “I’m sorry” was underrated. He didn’t really wanna do it, but it was his orders and we don’t know what kinda punishment he would get if he didn’t shoot them
@@brandonflorida1092 yeah do the time in jail in the middle of an unknown apocalypse, soldiers are trained to follow and obey orders, no matter how hard or fucked up the order is sometimes, if he didn't follow the order he might had been cut off from the others and leave him out there on his own with out military Aid because he cant follow and obey orders, he was doomed either way as DualWielded said, the scenario itself was hopeless for everyone
@@tankeboy6811 Sounds like the Nazi manifesto. I have my own morals and I'm not murdering innocent people no matter who tells me to or what the consequences.
Fuckin’ broke my heart all over again…I’ve seen this countless times in game clips, but it still hurts - and Nico fleshing out Sarah and her scenes with Pedro just hitting me in the feels over and over again just exponentially amplified the pain and grief. I’m glad I resubbed to HBO Max. Worth every penny.
I’ve never played the game, or video games, period, but that actress is so beautiful, and obviously talented, why would anyone complain? I heard people were complaining about the other str8 wyt girl’s looks as well. WTF?
@@poempadgett4664 it's sad cause some people come for the looks, not the talent. Even though Sarah's extremely beautiful, the ones who complained might have been expecting a white girl to play the role.
@@checkmattee222 You said that as if its something crazy to think, who would expect that a white character would be played by a white actor? Stupid statement.
Really underrated part of this scene is the actor who plays Tommy. He knows that she's gone as soon as he sees her on the ground and his quiet heartbreak is in perfect contrast to Joel's extreme devastation.
I know the whole story, but damn. They couldn't have done it better. The acting is perfect. Sarah's death is crucial part in Joel's story. Pedro Pascal is perfect for Joel, and that cry for help from Joel to Tommy made me burst into tears in a second.
Nico owned that episode. Having played the game, I knew that we wouldn't see a lot of her but man she made every second count and gave such a compelling portrayal of Sarah that I cried again though I know she'd die.
Exactly. The little things like how bad she felt when they didn't stop to help the family. In our short time with her, you saw what a kind, compassionate person she was and Nico and Pedro did such an amazing job establishing their close father-daughter relationship.
I don't know if you all have noticed but in this scene both in the video game and in the series (it's more noticeable in the video game) the way Joel expresses towards Sarah "Come on, Baby girl" is the same as in the final scene when he finds Ellie in the hospital and is carrying her in his arms (even the same as in this scene). It's like an indirect reference that confirms what we all know, Joel loved Ellie like a daughter. What a nice touch by NaughtyDog.
This one scene completely changed my view on this show. Went from dreading this shows premiere, and some of the casting choices, to being 100% on board and actually feeling excitement for what they are gonna do with some of the other huge scenes from the game. Holy Christ that scene was gut wrenching... 1:40 to the end is the quickest my mind has ever been completely changed about something, and I am so glad this show is in competent hands. I honestly feel really bad now for not being too happy with the casting choices, every single person just absolutely nailed their roll, and I'll be really surprised if Joel's actor doesn't end up nominated for or winning some major awards for his performance.
@@checkmattee222 because the people who say " i dont care about race" are bitching about race they changed sarah race and they freak out like who cares this such an american thing to be triggerd about
@@checkmattee222 I'm not sure what TilenHD is talking about, saying people are upset at the race of the actors cast. That's not the issue people had at all, the real reason people hated the casting choices is because alot of the most iconic characters looked completely different from how they appeared in the game, especially Ellie which I think was the cause of most of the backlash. That's really it, just seeing an actress who looks nothing like her game equivalent rubbed alot of people the wrong way, sort of like Daniel Craig in the James Bond reboots, or Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, then ended up eating their words and giving rave review about their performances. Same thing happened again recently with the live action Aladin film. Everyone thought Will Smith was going to be a horrible genie, but all those same reviewers and fans ended up saying he was the best part of the movie BY FAR
@@tankmaster1018 people actually were upset sarah was black. they were also upset maria was black. thats true and it was a HUGE thing when the show was airing
That halt the soldier did before attempting to finish Joel off and his quivering voice apologizing, that soldier was indeed legitimately sorry and felt like he had no other choice. I haven't watched this show yet but the acting is absolutely incredible. I'm actually considering subscribing to HBO Max just for this show
this scene broke me during the game and i felt even worse watching, knowing what was coming again. nico parker slowly letting go of life while pedro pascal is fighting for hers...and then the unexpected "tommy help me!" and the weak "joel..." had me choking up. the "yes sir" and "i'm sorry" was also a good change. superb writing and acting.
I do agree. When he said "But there's a little girl..." it immediately gave you and I'd say even Joel, the idea that this would happen. It sends a shiver in your spine.
Honestly.. I just couldn't do this part. Without the original dialogue it just doesn't seem the mood and that bums me out bc I cried so hard during the game but this? Nah
@@alexvasquez17 That’s kinda the point tough, cause yeah that’s what put Joel on guard and was able to turn around just in time to at least have saved himself. I doubt Joel would have survived being shot at point blank if the soldier didn’t say a single word or just straight up lied to them by saying something like “Im here to help”.
I kept rewatching this scene. And the way Joel was only scratched by the bullet. And turned. I just knew it was coming and I still got emotional. The way Pedro and Nico did this scene. They completely nailed it. This is why you should never judge the actors at all. They know how to act! And how The actor for Tommy said “Joel…..” there was nothing to do. All these months when the series was released. The actors and scenes are wild. I loved this season
Literally the only thing wrong with the scene was the cut too black a little too soon…and that’s just a subjective thing for me, it was perfect in every other way
The actress playing Sarah was phenomenal playing this role the game breaks me everytime but the show was on another level that change with the Tommy Help me! Heartbreaking
Nico Parker acted her heart out on this scene, WOW!! The rapid breathing, grasping for air, the agony and fear in screams. I felt all of it - I was not prepared for this again. Might I add a reminder that a video game adaptation in a live action medium is capable of being great, it's just that people behind said projects are not good enough to tell a faithful story that perfectly captures the essence of the world and the characters. You don't need it to be 1:1, you just need it to be faithful. Same applies to anime, books, game boards and so on.
What a powerful scene. Like many others have commented, I felt the emotion in his voice when he asked his brother for help. He initially tried to keep calm, but then he saw Sarah’s wound and her distress did not stop. It was too much. His own panic gave away.
I have never play The Last of Us, but I have seen this particular scene in the game. Seeing this scene of Sarah's death in live action form it's currently making me cry right now they did an absolute job with this scene and made it ten times more heartbreaking than it did in the game
@@kameronjones7139 The game version of her death is tragic. If you notice a change in the end, after Sarah died it showed Joel saddening face turning into a angry face. It's like the start of him turning into a savage and cynical survivor we know him as.
Maybe it's just me, but I think we're all forgetting one detail here: this all happened on Joel's birthday. Sarah's death is agonizing enough, but to be reminded of that fact on your birthday has to bring a whole new level of pain and sadness. If I were in his shoes, I'd never want to be reminded of my birthday if I lost my child on the same day.
I thought it happened the early morning (2:16 am) after his birthday because, before Joel went to bail out Tommy, Joel carried Sara to her room at 11:03 pm (aka still Joel’s birthday), and Sara woke up at 2:16 am, the next morning searching for Joel. Likewise, concerning the time, the time comes from Sara’s room clock.
Every gamer that played this game, knew this scene was coming, but no matter if this scene is from a game in 2013, it still hurts to see it in real life.
This scene is painful to watch. I went thru a similar event in my life. My brother was shot and it went down very similar like this. Its almost like a trigger. But it feels good knowing that an audience could see the emotion someone goes thru when they see someone they love bleed out, take their last breath. Hold them to the very end ❤
Heart breaking scene 💔 Genuinely really got to me this. I don't think I'm the only one who shed a tear for Sarah's death. This scene was done phenomenally well. Even everything leading up to it. First 32 mins in 10/10 & I had to stop, come here to write this cos of the impact it had.
Tommy standing there, having been a vet he is probably well aware of gunshot wounds and knows that the wound she suffered is one a solider couldn’t survive, much less a young girl, the break in his voice when he says “Joel”…. Fuck man
Yea yea and here comes everyone praising Nico’s performance when I guarantee 90% of those commenters were bashing the casting choice last week. “Fans” never learn. You’re opinions on a casting do not matter until you actually FULLY see them.
idk joel in the games sounded alot more desperate, his voice is wavering, his breath picks up he sounds like he should given the situation. This dude kinda undersold it for me "Baby, baby baby I got to get you up 🤖"
I thought this scene wouldn't affect me as I've seen it several times in the game already, but nope, got completely choked up and had to hold my tears seeing this.
i found this scene so bittersweet. joel’s reluctance to let sarah go was heart wrenching, yet seeing her finally at peace after those few minutes of unimaginable pain was a relief. she isn’t suffering anymore. my heart broke for joel’s loss, but i know that she’s better now than she was bleeding out. 💔💔💔
Imo the show made it more heartbreaking cause we spent more time with Sarah and there was more build up with Joel and Sarah's relationship before this scene. And this scene by itself is still incredible, considering the high expectations we all had for it. It's not a carbon copy, it really is doing it's best to surpass the game and give us something different, but staying true to the spirit of the game. I'm just praying to god season 2 isn't all crammed up and rushed like the last of us part 2 with all the time jumps. They should extend the Jackson parts as season 2. And recast Abby so she is more realistic looking and doesn't look like a steroided hulk and it might actually do part 2's storyline better. And have Joel die with some respect. Jesus.
As someone who was aware of the game/some of the story through knowing people who were fans but never played it myself, I have to say this intro had me fucking hooked and the death of Sarah was acted so devastatingly. Almost made me to depressed to continue with the 20 years later cut, even knowing from the basics I picked up that his daughter died.
You can be sure that they will humiliate Joel even more than in the "second game", neil cuckman hates Joel, he already did this throughout the first season (except the final scene which had the purpose of making you look at Joel like a villain), and now he's going to kill him again to convey his feminazi agenda.
I knew it was coming but god damn I’ve replayed the game a lot and the wincing and crying she does hurts me everytime and the show fucking nailed it turned my hype for the show into straight sadness 😂 this shits only the beginning
Everyone one in this scene despite or even in admiration of the changes from the game is they all have such a heartfelt performance that even knowing it’s acting I can not help even after a long time and many watched tear up at this point. Pedro solidified himself in my mind as one of the best in Hollywood with just a few words. “I know, I know, I know….” Damn what a performance.
From all the changes they made in the series, I think one of the best ones were how they made some of the scenes longer. Sarah dies way slower here. They took their time for us to see Joel having to witness her suffering for way longer. It also happens after Henry kills himself. The camera focus on Ellie's reaction, and it stays there for a while before we change scenes
The way Joel said the last “Sir” has so much emotion in that one word with the slight voice crack and just makes it sound so much more realistic as he’s pleading just with that word alone.
This scene sold the show for me, the entire opening did, the outbreak the chaos it was so well done and felt even more harsh when we saw more of Sarah and Joel living life before the infection hit, we saw her interacting with neighbors we saw signs of the disease spreading it was brilliantly paced and effective. Then there was this scene, and Pedro had already been in my good graces as an actor before but this really showed his skills IMO, the way he handled this scene had so much emotion, fear, sadness, grief, shock, terror, you instantly start to get he’s more panicked than anything and doesn’t know what to do, he’s in so much fear like any father would. And Sarah’s actor did just as well portraying a very real depiction of what getting shot would be like, you instantly feel how real this is, the piece of resistance in my book is she just dies, no last words no final breath she just dies in Joel’s arms as he’s still panicking, just slips away This scene is honestly so good at making a point and getting across everything it needs to without fancy tricks, and u really feel it too
IMO its even better since game Sarah was kind of just introduced then immediately killed, the show gave us nearly a whole hour to get to know Sarah so her death made more of an impact compared to the game
