I wasn't expecting any of that. my mind is totally blown! my music theory is not strong enough to let me understand every single thing you said, but it's really helpful. thank you very much!

Wow! I think this is one of the most useful composition videos I've ever seen. Maybe now I can better handle the requests I get based on temp tracks. Thanks so much!

This is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen. I was not expecting it to be technical or intelligent at all; I was expecting a vague, wishy washy video about something platitudinous. Still, I'm surprised about how much I understood, which isn't loads, but still, for someone self taught in music, I'm pretty pleased I understood so much.

I often write these things in 5-10 minutes. Without(consious) analysis. Fun to see that people use different approaches. It seems less direct to me and a bit inefficient but very thorough. Nice video

Yes, thanks. That’s the whole point, a good composer captures the idea in 5 seconds, this is a video to show everything that goes into the composer’s mind in 5 seconds, be it intuitive or not. The analytic approach is useful when you encounter a sound you’ve never heard before or to develop ideas when you get stuck intuitively, just like a tool you can use to take a screw you can’t just unscrew with your hands.

Wow the piano you composed here is lovely, and beautifully played. I was quite impressed with the way it resolved there at the end - it sounded perfect! Well done, with the whole video in fact. I gotta say I'm a bit envious of your knowledge and acumen in music theory. And, I don't mean this to be rude, but you sound quite young - so I wonder, how/where did you learn so much?

I commented on this a year ago about how much of a travesty it is that this is what composers must rely on (namely temp scores). After getting better as a composer and also understanding theory better, I've interestingly found that although I still don't really like being overly theoretical when I approach a piece, many of these ideas do come out naturally when one is more familiar with theory and one's instrument, and are actually more natural to implement than one might thing (i.e. choosing a key that has little to no similarities with the original, emphasizing certain modal notes in order to retain the same feeling, etc). It's all part of craft. While there's plenty of emotion and creativity that goes into composition, what makes an idea a great piece is, in the end, craft. Look at Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" -- strange and experimental for the time, but brilliantly and intentionally structured.

Fascinating - an excellent analysis. Though, I missed the bit about the feeling, emotion, rhythm and energy of the scene - surely that's a mandatory part of the 'how to compose'? Also, there was no mention of the voice leading and interesting movements that created the chord progression in the first place. It's an unfortunate aspect of music analysis - the analysis can actually miss the music. Talking of the nuts and bolts used describes nothing of the process of designing a supercar. So, not really a video on how to compose for the genres - more a video on how to do a harmonic analysis of sorts, and use that to create a piece in a similar style. Still a worthwhile endeavour - just not what the heading says the video is about.

The theme for this video was "writing for a temp track". It's in the intro, though not the title of the video. In the given scenario, the writer is being approached with an example of a piece of music that already has the feeling, emotion, energy built in. It's "make me something that sounds like this, but isn't this". I think it requires and informs a good understanding of how music can be used to capture those aspects to be able to reproduce them like this, which is why deconstructing music is important.

I'm with Danny Elfman in that I think the obsession with temp tracks in the industry, as far as I've heard it second hand, is a tragedy. He talks about how directors and the like (I assume similar for videogames) will stick temp tracks into scenes and since they end up hearing them over and over, they get so fixated on the temp track and it becomes so synonymous with their scenes that they end up wanting a highly derivative score. Does this happen in the game industry as well?
@mDecksMusic
@mDecksMusic 7 лет назад
You bet! And it is so hard to remove that impression from their minds! 2001 Space Odyssey is a great example. After they've used Strauss - "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", Alex North could not change their minds no matter what he did.
@RohannvanRensburg

mDecks Music (Ariel J. Ramos) It's really too bad. It's unfortunate also that it's a predictable side effect of overused temp tracks, but others don't seem to notice/care enough. I wonder if things are a bit more lax for developers/studios that are more interested in creatively interesting works. Makers of big budget Hollywood films are often petrified of straying off the beaten path.
@mDecksMusic

I guess it all depends on their desire or capacity to take the risk. Remember certain formulas are proven to work... until they don't work any more :)
@RohannvanRensburg
@RohannvanRensburg 7 лет назад
Certainly true, but what a tragedy when it becomes about a successful formula instead of a compelling, expressive, or meaningful piece of work. This is just as true in music as elsewhere, and why there is such an endless sea of moderately successful but extremely forgettable "product" floating around the radio and elsewhere in other artistic genres.

I think the theory is great but she needs to put comas in her text or just not directly read her text. You need 5 seconds after each sentence to assimilate otherwise you'll find yourself skipping backwards because she's already half way into the other part.

Such a lengthy explanation for such a simple concept. No wonder people's minds are "blown". All the music is doing is i - IV, i - iv ... that's it! The C# merely tells us we're hearing the IV major (A chord) instead of iv minor (Am) which is within the key of Em. It adds variety and unpredictability, no one in their right mind should be sitting there over analyzing the modal interchange and making this 2 chord change more complicated than it needs to be.
@mDecksMusic
@mDecksMusic 7 лет назад
+Nikolay G very true for this one theme. But it is the exercise of thinking about these things that will eventually make us better composers, where we will not depend only on finding things by pure luck to write something. I think it is worth putting the effort of trying to understand why things work. It is also important not to be driven only by this way of thinking when writing music and tap into the unconscious as well.
@tr3ndkiller
@tr3ndkiller 7 лет назад
I agree with what you're saying, however, I think this line of thinking (relating everything to a particular mode) could be very cumbersome to a composer. I was taught "jazz theory" in music school as well and a lot of emphasis was put on modes and playing over changes and from experience I can say it definitely held me back as a composer more that it should have. Not true for everybody, obviously. I don't personally see the need to explain every departure from the key centre and what mode that chord is borrowed from, as long as you understand the fact that you've left the key and that produces a certain sound which in turn attracts attention to that spot in the music. As long as you are aware of what you're doing. For example, I know if I play a major chord and then play an augmented chord six semitones higher it will sound tense and I know exactly what context to use that move in. I haven't given any thought to where that Aug chord comes from, I just know it's an "outside" chord and I know what that chord change sounds like. :) Just my 2 cents, not claiming I'm 100% right.
@mDecksMusic
@mDecksMusic 7 лет назад
+Nikolay G sounds good. I agree. I like the work of thinking about music when analyzing it. I think it is crucial not to mistake analyzing with composing, so in some sense you are right that some musicians will take one for the other and that is not the way to go

@mDecksMusic
@mDecksMusic 7 лет назад
+Braun Haus Media, LLC By ear means you can hear all this. You know your stuff then, and that's ok too. Music theory is just a tool to organize what you can hear and an approach to develop your ears to hear things you cannot hear yet. But I agree music theory won't help you be more creative, that's probably what you mean when you say it is not fun. One of the benefits of using theory is that you can use a common language to share your musical thoughts or concepts, such as I try to do in this video, and also to understand when others are sharing their thoughts. It is not essential but it is useful.
@braunhausmedia

Don't mind me, I'm just being an ass. Different people approach creative endeavors differently. If you derive fun from the mathematics of music, who am I to judge? To each his own. And I apologize for dumping on you in the first place.
