THAT ENDING?! Are you kidding me? What are your thoughts on it? 😱 If there is something missing from this episode that you'd like me to comment on let me know and I'll try and answer it in the comments or in next week's video. Thank you for being here! 👇

Would you ever have any interest in either playing the game and uploading it on here, or at least reacting to the cutscene movie which is like 3 hours roughly? They changed a fair amount of stuff some big some small, but a lot of the scenes in the game are wonderfully done and in some cases better as far as im concerned. Would be neat to see your thoughts on how the game characters contrast with the versions in the show, (Bill, Joel etc...) as well as why they may have changed them in the first place. I know your a busy doctor and all but its just a beautiful game, and i would for sure watch that as im sure most people here would as well. Thanks for the good reviews and cant wait to see how you feel about the home stretch, if they do it justice its gonna be wild.

The ending is even better now that I've rewatched it. Ellie's reaction to Joel falling off the horse seems (on the surface) to be self-concerning when she says "I don't know what I'm going to do, I don't know where I'm going." She seems to be only concerned about how his injury affects 𝘩𝘦𝘳. However, this scene is a mirror of the scene earlier when they are outside by the campfire and Ellie asks Joel the hypothetical question about what happens if the cure is found. "Where do you go, what do you do?" Those 2 same specific questions. In that first fireside version, she's really asking if they will be together in the future and seeing if he sees her somewhere in his future plans. The scene ends on an up note when he tells Ellie to "dream of sheep ranches on the moon." He has merged their two dreams of the future together. Hinting they will still be together in the future. At the end when she says these 2 things again, I don't know where I'm going, I don't know what I'm doing, she's really saying "How can there be a future if you're not in it with me?" Changed my opinion of Ellie's reaction to Joel being injured from one of fear and self-centeredness, to one of deep connection.

I like the small detail, that when he said: "Everyone loved contractors" and Ellie said: "Nice!" Joel just smiled, cause I really feel like that deep down he wants to be like a hero to her, like everyone "dad" wants that to be for their children.... and when he smiled: He felt cool in front of her and that made him happy.

Are Tommy and Maria both insane or what!? Having a kid when you have no access to professional healthcare, midwifes, and doctors who can perform a C section if necessary. How stupid can you be. And having a child is just another mouth to feed. They sure are selfish, mindless, and primal instinct driven, they might as well be infected...

I love that different specialists are starting to do these "react" things to TLOU. We've had Doctors react to the medical stuff, film students reacting to the cinematography, screenwriters reacting to the narrative, and now a therapist reacting to the mental health aspects. It brings a cultural discussion that has more impact than just watching the show, so I'm happy to have it reinterpreted through each perspective.

I was waiting for you to dissect this sensational episode, so many layers to this! Pedro Pascal's acting in this episode evoked a wide range of emotions. Tears were streaming down my face during THAT scene with Tommy, Pedro absolutely nailed that scene. It was so great to see Joel's vulnerability on display. This episode was exceptionally well-written. His trauma and his fear of failing Ellie leading to him pleading with Tommy to take her off his hands was so incredibly heartwrenching to see. Both Pedro and Bella acted their socks off, the emotion displayed on screen felt incredibly authentic. Gabriel Luna was so incredible as Tommy as well

Exactly my thoughts on this episode! Exceptionally well-written scenes with amazing performances by all the actors, they really made the relationships between all the characters so much more complex than they were in the game which only helped to further show how much Joel and Ellie have developed emotionally. I'm gonna need everyone who's complaining abt this episode making Joel look 'soft' to watch this video, bc this is how complex people are in real-life; even if someone seems stoic or jaded on the surface, it all comes tumbling out at some point if you manage to push certain buttons with them. A great turning point in their relationship and each moment felt so earned- this is definitely in my top 3 episodes at the moment :)

I absolutely love the realistic portrayal of PTSD in the show, and it adds a whole new level of realism to Joel. When the old couple mention the river of death, the fear creeps up on him and he likely doesn't quite understand why until later when the dog is looking for signs of infection and he freezes. His fear of failure and ineptitude (with his physicality now having more limits as well) constantly playing in the back of his head as he gets closer to Ellie is so incredibly realistic given his trauma, which makes it all the more tragic. And then later when Tommy says he's gonna be a father and him having even less of a reason to now take Ellie off his hands, he's forced to be vulnerable in a safe space with his brother to get him to take Ellie. This episode was exceptionally well-written and acted

The genius of this episode in particular is that they’ve set us up the last six weeks to not get attached to any new characters and to expect the absolute worst. So what do they do this episode? The new characters just go on living their merry little lives and they let the anticipation for the bad thing build until the last second. We know it’s coming, and they know we know. So they toy with us until the pressure is finally released like a bullet from a gun.

I have to say that you’re my favorite reactor on this show - it just because you take your work and your responsibility to help educate very seriously while also allowing your humanity to be entact. You get academic while also casual. It has helped me learn a bit more about how my own mind works while also being able to see these stories from a perspective of someone who has developed a real emotional intelligence. For example, I would not have connected that Maria’s black and white view of Joel may have been because of a career in which she had to believe that there is a solid line between people who are “good,” and people who are “bad.” You made that connection immediately. I am curious as to what caused you to immediately determine there was a greater importance behind the girl who Ellie mean-mugs during their lunch. I am not saying whether or not you’re correct, just trying to understand what subtext you may have been reading that I had missed.

When Joel and Ellie are talking about going their separate ways and Ellie brings up Sarah and it triggers Joel, we also need to remember that this whole situation is triggering Ellie too. Her biggest fear is ending up alone: "everyone I have cared for has either died or left me". I liked that in the game Ellie left when she found out that Joel was going to leave her with Tommy, like "I am leaving before you can do that to me". This also put Joel in a situation where he understood that he is important to her and he had to be the one to take her to the Fireflies. On the show it seemed like Joel just needed a good night's sleep to reach that conclusion.

I cannot tell you how happy I am to see Joel's character click (or be understood) by someone reacting to it all. Joel's "dark-days" post-Sarah were pure animal instinct, survive, not something he took pleasure in or even thought about WHILE He, Tommy, Tess and the rest were doing it. Joel is (currently) having his pain define who HE is, and it's just so friggin' sad to see him try to push everyone away as a result; when it all comes from a place of fear. Yet even still, people have related his cold actions to being a "macho man" or "hyper-masculinity" or whatever. Joel's evolution is beautiful. A "real man" isn't afraid of his feelings. That's what the game taught me. I'm so happy with how the show is handling it.

The scene in the morning after the talked about the future is a scene I personally understood better, the second time I saw it, bc. For Joel it was like "I failed her again and fall asleep" while ellie wanted to show him that she learnt what he tought him and wanted him to be proud.

I have struggled all my life with being a person who feels things very deeply, for both the good and the bad, and it's been so hard to deal with because other people look at me like I'm crazy for getting emotional about fictional people and their experiences. I watched other people on a RU-vid video play the intro to the game where Sarah dies and I cried for what felt like way too long over that, but because of it I ended up playing the game and just loved it. I felt EVERYTHING that Joel and Ellie went through and I almost felt like I was right there with them every step of the way - which I love in a game. But, as usual, I had nothing but a general idea of WHY I felt that way, I just did. Watching you go through each emotion and reaction and having you explain the big why of it all - and especially when you explain that it's totally normal to feel this way - really helps me deal with my feelings in a way that is healthy. Up until about 10 months ago, I abused substances in order to dampen down all my feelings so that I could relax for the amount of time the substances worked on me, but the desire for more almost broke my relationship with my family, and that reality helped me to stop and get help. So now I'm back to having all the feelings again and sometimes I think I'm going to drown in them. But between your reactions to Wednesday and your reactions to this show, you give me nuggets of truth that I can apply to my situation that helps me a lot. Thank you for doing this, even though I can see how much it seriously bothers you at times. Just remember that your pain and explaining how the characters are dealing with it is helping many of us out here who don't have access to a wonderful therapist like you.

My sister says she'll eventually watch the show and when she does I'll share your videos with her, we've been talking a lot lately and bonding about our shared past traumas, I think your presence would be beneficial to her too

I really do enjoy your breakdowns and the psychological analysis you bring to this show and all of your reviews. Thank you 😊 I also want to share something about the ending which harkens back to the first episode, something I only realized after I rewatched it the other day with my mom. Mind you, this was not in the game so it was new for those who played and I think it went over everyone's head. That kid who wandered into the QZ from the wilderness was infected. I believe he was like Ellie. Immune. But since this world does not know that immune people exist, they kill them off the second they catch wind. That boy was quiet. Traumatized. You can tell he'd lost so much, people he loved, and was scared and didn't say a word because maybe, like Ellie, he was taught not to tell anyone about his condition. He was alone and didn't have anyone there to protect or vouch for him that he was not a threat. I mean, how could a child articulate something so complex to adults who run the world? This idea is going to make so much more sense when we get into the next episodes. This show and the writing is incredible. What do you think?

@@the.truth.doctor wild, right?! It makes his death so much sadder. And what a juxtaposition that Joel was the one to throw that immune body into the fire.

There's a line when Ellie and Joel are talking in the bedroom where Joel says "You have no idea what loss is." That's a pretty important line to remember for Seasons 2 and 3.

I was in therapy in 2012-2013; best period of my life. After I moved in another city and I have this problem: my ex psyco can't be replaced, "no one can be best". Now, I watched and listened your comments to TLOU and I think that you live in Italy I choose you ahahah. But you don't live in Italy, but i wrote this because I really appreciate your approach/expertise. Kisses

I think seeing Joel visibly afraid shook Ellie, so her teasing Joel about the 'River of Death' was her way of getting him to reassure her that he wasn't afraid, because if he's not afraid then everything will be okay

I just came across your reactions for TLOU and I can say it is really an eye-opener hearing it from your perspective. I have also been watching a reaction from a film student's POV and matching it together with yours, it makes everything even more amazing and it makes me appreciate your effort in dissecting each episode for us and understanding the characters further. I am so happy that the showrunners did such an amazing job adapting the game. So far one of the best series around right now. I can't wait for your reaction on the next episode!

A small touch - Joel looks to the right at Ellie on her horse a couple of times while hugging Tommy. Like "we found him!" but Ellie looks concerned. She's never seen Joel act quite like this. I also like her concern about being out of Joel's presence for the first time in months.

sometimes when we think about psychiatrists or therapists, we can have a cold and clinical view, you're the only therapist on RU-vid, that at least I''ve seen to react to this like the rest of us, you blend in to humanity well, if that even makes sense, compared to other therapists. That analyse and diagnose, you understand pain, and humanity, so thank you for that!

when you were talking about feeling weak and like a failure during recovery from a trauma, i think around like 24 minutes in the video, idk i’ve been watching these videos for a while now and sometimes you say something that i just really need to hear and this was one of those times. i just want to comment to say thank you for making these videos cause i know i’m not the only one who needs to hear the things you have to say.

Every comment made in this reaction... even beyond those made in the other exceptional reactions for this series... is 'brilliant' and completely appreciated by me. Every aspect of Joel and Tommy's estrangement, the roles misunderstood, the blames attached, the misgivings granted and the overwhelming mental, and even physical pain and devastation it has caused for Joel. Yet even as monumental as this is, I don't believe these brothers conflicts is the 'main' thing. I believe that merely gets us to both Ellie's mistrusting move to eavesdrop on Joel and Joel's surrender to truth, confession of weakness and plea for Tommy to take Ellie. For me, the most poignant confrontation and pinnacle of the series thus far, was the surrogate father-daughter confrontation Joel and Ellie have needed to have since they found each other in Boston. For each of them, they have needed each other to be father and daughter; likely since she was born... and since Sarah died in his arms. And yet, in the moment, they let each other down with insensitivity and betrayal only to seemingly accept becoming 'emotionally bound' as father and daughter in the morning. So, when Joel falls off the horse, bleeding out on the ground, with Ellie begging Joel to not leave her, saying he is the one thing she can not live without... it was THEN... that I was devastated.. broken... This reaction is simply 'spectacular' in every possible way. Bravo!
