I have a love for movies and video games. I enjoy seeing them intersect.
This edit isn't merely all cutscenes and some gameplay stitched together. In an attempt to produce the most faithful take on what could realistically fit in the medium of film, I cut down certain scenes, omitted entire sections of the game, and even transplanted key moments in the name of efficiency.
I retooled the opening, switched the opening credits to end credits, and made custom scrolling end credits. Scenes of gameplay are often presented in ways that they did not unfold in a normal experience, typically resulting in awkward - but necessary - transitions. Even cutscenes occasionally appear differently here than they did in-game, for the sake of flow, continuity, or tone.
What I'm trying to say is... I put a great deal of work into this project, so I hope the result is enjoyable. I wanted this to be something that fans of the game could appreciate when they want to jump back into the world of Joel and Ellie, while also presenting everything I loved about The Last of Us in a format that is easily consumed by the uninitiated.

Note: There was nothing I could do to get rid of the button popups. The text that appears in Tess's penultimate scene was similarly unavoidable. And yeah, this edit is imperfect... but let's be honest, I'd be re-recording gameplay until the end of time if I didn't stop myself at "good enough."

I honestly don’t know why this doesn’t get more recognition. I’ve read some of the comments complaining about you leaving stuff out, but honestly that should be obvious, considering you had to compress over 6 hours of gameplay into 2 hour movie. I think you did a great job, and even with some sequences missing, the whole thing still made sense and was very enjoyable to watch!☺️

I love that part of the game because it's so bittersweet; Ellie was Joel's entire world so by saving her and getting her out of that hospital, despite the fact she would've been the ultimate cure for other people who were infected if she were to sacrifice herself to save them, Joel saved his world/his everything because that's what Ellie became. She went from simple "Cargo" to being "A Reason to keep Living/Fighting".

This is good, I love your edit Of course there are some cuts and edits that I will consider a problem like the end credit score isnt well suited for opening credit scene, and bill's section should've never been cut... But overall, it's great

Woo, this person gets it. That's all I want! I dream of a day when I can watch cinematic versions of games that I don't/can't play. Like, officially. Publishers will probably never allow it though....

Yeah top job mate. Maybe a series format might be better thought. Say 6 episodes about 40 mins long. It's the transitions between scenes that's tricky. If you can master that, you could make an epic film out of this game. Can't wait for the next one!

I remember playing this back in 2013 when it released, the beginning had me invested because never have I ever cried in the first 10-15 minutes of a game before.

I wish I would have found this video, before I watched Last of Us 8 hours ans 2nd part of 11hours walkkthrough , please tell me where can I find a video movie edit like this, of Red Dead Redemption 2, and many other story driven AAA games, thank you so much you done an amazing job, which will save lot of time, we will be happy to see in short time, because less is more, few people know this, thank you.

I like your edits but you sure skipped a lot of good cutscenes I get the fact you wanted to be creative I get that but you need the other good cutscenes. It’s really hard actually too take a game and cut it together like a film without it feeling like a game. There are parts of this game that are meant to be game portions and it dosnt fit into a movie all too well so I get cutting those out but some could have been used it’s a hard balance and everyone I’ve seen has different editing skills but for what this is it’s not too bad.

I left out Bill's town in order to keep the length of the movie around 2.5 hours. When I made this, I decided there was nothing crucial in that section that absolutely needed to make the final cut. I've always loved that section of the game though!

Presumably, yes. Though who knows where I'll be, what I'll be doing, when the game comes out in like 2 years. (I started putting together The Last of Us: Left Behind a couple weeks ago. Should be done in early August, a much easier project because I don't need to figure out how to cut out 14 hours of game haha.)

Jason sent me the link because I played this game like 7 times. This is really great so far! i think it would probably be easier to make it into 3 movies, so much good stuff needs to be cut to put it into one. Maybe 1 movie that ends with the Tess stuff and #2 ends with the Joel impale and the 3rd the rest? Either way nice job.

My first draft was about half an hour longer than this video. You've got an interesting idea - that could have been applied to that draft, which had Bill's town in it. Theoretically, I could cut at the end of Bill (or cliffhanger at the hunters' ambush) and again - like you suggested- just before winter. It's an attractive 3-part mini-series idea, episodes about an hour each. Full-length movies, I'm not so sure. Anyway, thanks for checking it out and even more for the nice comment!

Thinking about editing the remake in a tv mini-series format, actually. Challenge myself to edit the story for like 6 hour-long episodes or something, instead of this 2 and a half hour movie edit. Plus, it'd be fun for me to compare my editing choices to the upcoming HBO tv series.

lol dude theres so many cut scenes from this game no way he will be able to get it all in 2-3 hours. Theres a reason games dont make for good movies theres to many little things that if left out will make it not very good. I've never been a big fan of movies in general, I've always felt that you can't really tell a good story with 2 hours of time hence all my favorite films are usually the longest ones like Fellowship of the Ring.

Why tf did u cut out sum things? I just skipped to a point and within 10 seconds you cut out the part where joels brother comes in and warns Ellie and joel bandits are in the house. That was cool. And it would explain why joel comes out with a shotgun. If you’re gonna make a movie out of a game we’ve already seen at least show ALL THE CUTSCENES. You aren’t making it cooler by cutting shit out

I just discovered this game; even though it's been around now for 5 years. Everything else out there had been such a massive disappointment and teeming waste of time. The Last of Us is most definitely one of those rare gems that most of us gamers only find a few times in a lifetime. (At least as of 2018.) I remember its debut well and everyone was telling me to play it. But I had the same advice from things like COD and WOW. Really saddened by those titles. You know what would make for a phenomenal sequel or intermediary... I guess it would better labeled? I would like to see the story develop between when Joel lost Sarah and how he ended up in Boston. They never really touched on that. Maybe they'll do that in the second one that is coming out later this year, but I do not know. I'm a bit skeptical to the second one as it involves some weird cult people... Other games ruined it with that notion (Silent Hill, Parasite Eve). I just hope to God there can be ONE, JUST ONE lineage of games that they do not fuck up. Let this be the one. I will officially lose hope in video games if the second The Last of Us turns into RE or Silent Hill sequels.

Bakery Media I thought this was gonna be a live action film (there is one on RU-vid) and I just saw it yesterday. So when I saw yours I got a little hyped of there was another fan made live action the last of us movie. I think you should add "game movie" to the title to differentiate it from a live action.

I haven't played this game. From what I've seen in this video, it's a fantastic job of telling the story of these characters and setting up the world they live in. This edit gives the most important context needed to tell the story, but leaves some things out (much like any book to movie adaptation). I like your edit and hope you do more in the future.

Joel's actions and decisions were pretty fascinating. The ending got better with time, I am a fan. Particularly liked how the perspective was on Ellie at the end, kinda teasing the thought of a sequel starring her same as how this game featured us playing as Joel (granted, we controlled Ellie in the winter section as well, but eh).

AndrewDonut I think Joel's decision in the end was just human nature at play. The whole game in my opinion was built on the morality of the characters being put to the test. Joel's decision, it being a selfish one, is the most human part of the game. He doesn't care about having a cure if it means losing Eillie in the process. I would have done the same thing myself if i was in Joel's shoes.
