In Episode 2 of Scorned by Muses, Taylor examines the legacy of the recently deceased minimalists Andre, Serra and Stella and their relationship to modernism and postmodernism by reviewing several shows which are currently up in Chelsea. Ad Reinhart at David Zwirner, Richard Serra at Joni Moissant Weyl, David Salle at Gladstone and Michael Krebber at Greene Naftali.

There are so many channels (some of whom I love) that portray the contemporary art world with an uncritical eye, only showing the "good" from an aesthetic perspective and never diving deep into what makes the works successful, or unsuccessful. I appreciate that there's finally a channel dedicated to contemporary art that is actually willing to offer a real opinion that is well-argued, nuanced, and bold. Wishing you future success with this channel!

First, I love the video and agree with all of it. It briefly left me wondering whether art of any substance can be made today. The key to making art today is to accept this history of art and its conclusion. Compartmentalize it as a particular project humanity undertook and then step outside of it. It doesn’t encompass all human expression throughout history. People have always made art and always will. It doesn’t need to carry the burden of all our existential questions for the rest of eternity. Artists can simply make work about their lives and the world they inhabit. If they’re really paying attention, the work will speak to larger ideas. Some of the postmodernist and minimalist art is pretentious precisely because it doesn’t do that. When artists try to make art about nothing, they succeed in not creating anything. Pull your head out of your ass and pay attention to what’s around you. The art will come and it will be profound because people will recognize your humanity in it.

Art can be nothing but an expression of the society from which it is born. The question is how conscious is that expression and how well does it articulate potential.

I saw all of these shows too. As you know, David Salle was panned in the 80s but, to be fair, he did make some good work, though I preferred the harder hitting, Eric Fischl. Salle's current work is more saccharine than the old work. Vapid paint handling. Phoned in hastily. Genuinely disingenuous. Yada yada yada. The Reinhardt show was great. I agree with what you said about Serra too.

Great work. I appreciate your attitude and the tone of the video. Can't wait for the next one. One thing I am kind of interested in is: Are you familiar with the work of Daniel Richter? He was highly influenced by the group around Kippenberger.

@maximal1374
@maximal1374 12 дней назад
@@TheYearbookCommitteeNYC Sure, cologne is an interesting art spot. But Hamburg is also quite interesting. Especially Daniel Richter, Jonas Burgert, or Jonathan Meese. Especially Richter is one of the most famous german painters today. (And no, he is no relative of Gerhard Richter) But it seems you have an interest in the minimalistic way of art/painting? If so, maybe the works of Franziska Reinbothe could interest you. Anyways, thanks for all the effort of your content. I enjoyed the video and the displayed artworks. Always great to see some works of Reinhardt. Edit: I forgot to mention, the nonproductive attitude is quite interesting. Never heard of it before. So, thanks for that!

On one hand the average person wants anything to be art and allows for anyone and evryone to be an artist but then when some guy drags in a bag of trash or whatever junk is in his office as the art peice, then hes called lazy, unimaginitive and questioned if he is an artist and if what he does or has on display is actually art. 😂😂😂

Perhaps you should remove the Tiravanija association because you clearly missed the point of his work (or his generation's economic reality). I was taking this seriously and found some value in the honest analysis, but the irreverent attitude in the final gallery was unfair to the artist. Maybe take it as an exercise to interpret art you dont care for in good faith rather be immature in the gallery (You probably dont even realize how seamlessly you interacted with the Krebber, even in jest). Also, since you brought up the legacy of these artists who's careers started at the juncture between late/ high modernism and pomo, why didnt you confront their careers? Would it be because all three trajectories would reveal contradictions?
@TheYearbookCommitteeNYC

What's the point of Tiravanija's work?
@Gulfstreams

@@TheYearbookCommitteeNYC He's one of the first to reframe art as a social practice. The story behind the curry is beautiful. He was running late because he had to find all the right ingredients. The cooking was delayed and thus visitors were arriving to kitchen chaos. But without a word of direction, visitors helped with the cooking, strangers set up the tables, harmony came together for a work of art. Art isnt just the object in the space, its humans coming together to engage. You should see his collages centered around spontaneous human activity. This creative reframing of art happened in a time when there was no art market, meaning menial resources and support for artists after college. Today the artist continues to use mirrored surfaces to reinforce the audience participating in art, in the making of meaning.
