thank you for voicing my general critique of many cdramas (horrible sexism disguised as romancic interest). even though i haven't watched this one (and won't), your rant makes me feel validated, like i'm not the only one refusing the objectification of women in dramas

Also the two leads have no chemistry. It's like watching two friends or siblings pretending to like one another.

Congratulations that you watched till ep 24. I crawled till ep 14 somehow all the while trying to tell myself that this is a drama with no reflection of modern-day Chinese society where educated professional females use their beauty rather than their brain to get close to a so-called alpha. I agree 100% with your rant. Apart from that, the lack of chemistry between the leads, the naivety of the niece bordering stupidity and the crappy advice from the friend of the FL......phew!

You didn’t even get to the TERRIBLE, boring, repetitive script! It’s the exact same scenes, over and over, episode after episode. Things we see at least repeated almost every episode between the leads: -slo-mo moving in for a kiss but interrupted by a phone call -a non-romantic friend or relative talking to ML, 2nd ML or 3rd ML seen and misunderstood by FL, 2nd FL or 3rd FL, and vice versa -the unbelievably dragged out “misunderstanding” as to who the ML’s niece is -the FL going to 2nd FL over and over, asking about the same issue (her initial flirting with ML to get revenge on ex-BF) and each time the BF giving her the same bad advice -the FL going to tell the ML “the truth” only to see him with another female and assume it’s a date, or the ML going to confess his feelings to the FL only to see her with another tech guy and assume she’s flirting to get an interview -the clueless way the FL always says what confirms the MLs nagging (and correct) suspicion that she flirts and uses her looks to get interviews with top tech guys -the nauseating flirty texts the FL sends the ML when she’s supposedly a top notch journalist for a respected magazine covering complex finance and cutting edge tech developers. I could go on, but the way these tedious tropes are repeated EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, so that the leads are in the exact same position, with no growth of their relationship at all, at the 24th episode as they were in the 1st is ridiculous. The screenwriter should be banned from ever writing another romance. 😡 I feel sorry for the actors. They have to know how shitty this script is.

First of all Wang Hedi looks to young for this role, he must grow up for this kind of role. Secondly, the story is so artificial. There is no laid back in the script. Director is just terrible. I have seen this kind of artificial acting in many Chinese dramas and this mannerism. You can sense bad director especially with actors such as Wang Hedi. When you see how different his face expression is in one drama compared to another.

I've started to watch Cdramas recently and I've seen some questionable ones to say the least. The script is almost always the same: -"Cinderella" marries the CEO by mistake or because she is forced by her family, -the guy proves to actually be in love with her evil sister (because she apparently saved him from something when they were kids, but it actually was the FL, not the sister), -they both start literally torturing the FL horrifically and making her life a living hell (all this while the evil sister pretends the FL is the one torturing her), -then she somehow gets pregnant while also being terminally ill, -the CEO finally finds out and "is sorry" for not believing her and siding with the evil sister, -she forgives him and they live happily ever after🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 I don't know who's writing these insane scripts that portray extreme violence and cruelty mainly towards women as sexy and the proof of love that women want from men, but I'm sure it's gotta be some frustrated misogynistic incel type of men, because they clearly couldn't be further from the truth.

Here’s my hot take: Bai lu is overrated. I first saw her in The Legends and thought she wasn’t bad but after that she seems to lost focus on what works for her. Now she’s picking cringy roles and everyone is eating it up; it’s crazy. Btw don’t hate me, it’s just my personal opinion 😅

To date, I hadn't watched any c dramas that made me cringe. Not that there weren't any but I wasn't watching them. Being a fan of Bai Lu, I was looking forward to this one but OOOOMMMGGG!!! I feel myself cringing at the silly acting she has to do like stupidly running away after forwardly kissing the ML etc and the other silly moves she portrayed. I really can't imagine Bai Lu having to act such silly stuffs when she is supposed to be an intelligent award winner journalist. I find myself dreading to continue watching so I ended up skipping scenes just to avoid those stupid moments.

I'm so relieved to hear that this drama does NOT represent AT ALL the relationships in China. I was absolutely shocked by the lack of respect of the main lead, and about the behaviour of the women who accepted this. I was wondering if this couple could be the "role model".. so this video is really important! Thank you for showing how wrong this is and saying loud and clear that it's not acceptable. 😮

There is not enough time in the day to list all the things wrong with this particular drama, but you summed up the key points in 15 minutes or less, that's why we love you!

1) This drama has to be re-titled as “Only for love to my mobile phone”; 2) As a horse person I am laughing my ass of every time I see something horse-related: “Have you ever seen a foal so small.” Folks, it clearly is an OLD PONY 😂 and if it was a foal where is his mother? And probably only the drama actors go casual horsebackriding in high end grand prix dressage competition outfit whereas their horses and riding skills do not match the situation making them look like apes on horsepack. Soooo uterly ridiculous. All other things are alredy told trillion times by other unfortunate watchers.

I stopped around 24 in Only For Love... it's the only drama I didn't push through to finish. I was extremely disappointed that Dylan Wang picked this script. Just awful. The 18yr old who kept chasing the divorced 30+ year old was also disgusting. That is not okay.

Он - впечатление спорное... но если учесть, что приходится воротить миллиардами, а на плечах сидят старые друзья отца, желающие поучать, то ситуация непростая. При этих входящих обстоятельствах развивается роман главных героев. Пижама гг, да, была ни к чему, перед девушкой в пижаме? Но может это местный колорит такой, так принято в богатом обществе? Журналистка оказывается одна в доме с главным героем, редактируя статью? Вполне допустимо, мне самой по своей работе приходилось сдавать проданный объект в 12 часов ночи полукриминальным покупателям, поэтому допускаю, что подобное могло быть. Интервью в машине? Тоже может быть, я сама подписывала договоры именно в машине, по причине нехватки времени у клиента. Здесь вопрос доверия и здравого смысла. Не пошел спасать племянницу? Но племянница уже взрослая девочка, должна научиться постоять за себя сама, тем более, что он не оставил ее совсем без помощи, прислал своего помощника. Придираться можно бесконечно, если есть охота. Я оставила это дело, чтобы получить удовольствие от этой романтической истории. Великолепно заканчивается! Я полностью удовлетворена! Чего и вам всем желаю!

I agree to your rants of 4 of 5 dramas. I dropped all dramas except for Hidden Love. I understand your point of view. Will I let my daughter teenage watch this now? My answer will be a no. But as an grown female adult, yes. As a 2nd generation Asian American woman, sorry to ask/say, but who haven't had a crush on older man at that age?? It's a cute drama that brings out the girly side of me. I personally watch Hidden Love multiple times. Hidden Love to me is more down to earth on my Western up bringing. I think cdramas are being made for kids literally! I watched it 2X speed and skipped all the way to the end and still feel uncomfortable watching! My eye candy for Luo Yunxi cannot salvage the situation...

I watched both Goblin and this drama. Trust me, this is no Goblin. Goblin is in the stratosphere and Only for Love is barely ground floor. Having said that, I did somewhat enjoy the drama in spite of its endless flaws, mainly because I generally turn my brain off when watching RomComs. Let's face it, the vast majority of them are NOT good templates for real relationships. They should serve as examples of what people need to run away from. Basically, when I watch RomComs, I come for the pretty, and on that Only for Love delivered.

I'm really sad The Business Proposal with its horrendous power dynamics wasn't mentioned as at least a reference. It's not just China.

I was excited to watch thing because I love the lead actors, but as always I check Avenue X wether its worth it or not. 9:16 The way my mouth opened and scoffed told me enough about watching this drama. Even if I loved the actors to death I won't be wasting my time on this romance hidden misogyny.

I only lasted 8 episodes. Wanted to see Wang Hedi and Wei Zhe Ming, but ugh... Surprised that I started liking the niece, and also liked 2FL actress, but that wasn't enough. Glad I didn't waste my time, otherwise I might start having negative feelings for the actors.

Omg! I was actually thinking about you AvenueX whilst watching (mostly skipping) this atrocity. So you just came on time. To say it's bad, it's an understatement...I honestly don't know what I was watching because there is no heads or tail to this story. I really respect Bai Lu and Dylan Wang as actors so I'm very puzzled why they chose it. It also has many veteran actors too so it's a mystery why they all chose it. I still need to think about what I actually liked about it. I spent like 5-10 mins per ep. cause I kept skipping....you can say I was desperately looking for any meaningfulness and I couldn't find it. What a shame...😞

I have enjoyed your other content but here I must respectfully disagree. The point of this drama is that the ML and FL are strong independent people but behave differently when they are with each other. I believe that the FL is interesting because she is conscious of her extraordinary beauty and has no false modesty about it and yet she never ever uses it in her life - except when she is ridiculously over the top using it to soothe her dented pride and hurt about her ex-boyfriend. She is flawed and the drama does not hesitate to tell us that she is flawed. She is hard working, focused and laser sharp when it comes to her work but clueless and has no sense when it comes to her interpersonal / romantic relationships. She is obnoxious, silly, vain and flirtatious because she is a scorned woman and has lost all perspective. That is the point. She is not representing all women, nor does the drama indicate her behaviour is ok. she is deliberating doing wrong things to attract the ML no matter what for nefarious reasons. The ML is someone who adores this woman and acts out of character. There is a scene where she talks about another man who is approaching her that she needs to work with who she knows likes her. He says that he will leave it to her discretion to sort out things. And apart from being possessive and caring, he is actually not someone who breaths down her neck. There is a fine line between misogyny / toxic gender relationship and alpha men and women. They are not the same. This drama was close to the edge but did not cross over. The beauty of this drama is that the leads are not perfect beings - they are flawed in ways we all are - but when they are together they fit perfectly. Naturally I get that to each their own. Many people will dislike this drama because they find it draggy slow etc. - I thought they all did a great job and we got to see a really romantic relationship that thrived over time where the characters grew. I agree with the bit on the approval required by Shi Yan on her feature article - I didn't quite get that - and wondered if it was a Chinese cultural thing that because it was a feature rather than an interview it needed approval. That definitely seemed odd.

The comments on Viki are the opposite of Mango TV, I think. With every episode, more and more viewers (especially female ones) are frustrated with basically every aspect of the drama.

I dropped after 12 episodes and I'll never recover from going that far, this show was utter TRASH. Agreed to everything you say in your rant. Incredibly disappointed that Bai Lu accepted to star in such a messy drama. Aside from the terrible cinematography and directing, there was no chemistry between the actors and Dylan's acting was even worse than in his beginning days. It's reassuring to see that the majority of people seem to agree on this drama (in the comments below, but also in the ratings in general), I was starting to wonder if the issue was with me.

International viewer here. Loved your insight into this drama - I agree Chinese Drama Land has produced some poor quality stories full of outdated tropes. There are good ones as well, thankfully. I thought ‘Fake It Till You Make It’ did a great job of representing both women and men navigating personal and professional relationships. There must be an audience for ridiculous fluff or they wouldn’t continue making series like this. Even so, every country seems to put out both good and bad shows, so I don’t think less of Chinese Drama Land when I see a dumb show. I know something better will come along so I am still a fan. Ooh no this kind of drama will create a lot of 恋爱脑 kind of people in this world and it's strange bc the film industry was releasing films telling people NOT to be 恋爱脑. so that's pretty contradicting. I hope Chinese drama land will start focusing on more realistic dramas haha Also I have seen 2 of the 5 worst c-dramas you ranked. Hidden Love WAS BAD (yayy I was in a forum where people were defending against this drama, and I felt that maybe I was being overcritical)! Even my 14 yo niece couldnt survive 2 eps, she said the FL's voice was too annoying and too fake innocent. Till the end of Moon I finished till the end but I was getting more and more frustrated till the end, and seriously this drama was annoying for so many reasons. And I really wanted to watch Only for love but after your rant, I dont think I will see it yet anymore hahahah. I actually seen clips of Wang Hedi's character, and I DID NOT feel the oomph in his line delivery, like wasnt he supposed to be this 'cool boss'? He just sounds like a regular dude that is frowning all the time with that gelled up hair ahhaha. Unfortunately he couldn't carry it off, RIP. All these dramas btw are just for the face only - not much plot lines/ story lines, and just hoping that the characters will just be pretty to attract the fans who watch shows without their brains :/.

Haha ok I'm following this one and it didn't hit the spot but I didn't care to process why and you hit the nail on it. I read the novel and it was pretty ridiculous but I let it slide because it's a novel. But seeing it being played out on screen really doesn't work. This is one of the novels where I wished the director and scriptwriter would've done better to change the downfalls of the novel and make it better, but they didn't. Instead they kept it the same and added even more unnecessary love lines when they could've fleshed out the main characters and storyline. And seeing Wang Hedi play this character made me second guess if I liked his acting or not.

Tbh i think dylan and bailu agree to be in this drama despite a bad script writing is because this drama will be aired on TV, not only on online streaming. I heard that this drama got like tier A+ or something on money investment (lots of money will be spent on filming this drama). So i guess they both took this drama as a career progressor. (which i doubt that it is worth or not)

In SOTKP BL supposedly plays a beautiful character so in the drama you would see instances where people voice how pretty she is and I am like ??? Bai Lu with make up and all of those fancy stuff on her is a solid 5 for me. There is absolutely nothing striking nor grabbing about her. It is not like looking at a Fan Bing Bing, Alicia Chia, Liu Yi Fei or Gao Yuan Yuan in their prime or even now. So I am surprised when in dramas characters are gushing about her look

Thank you for saving me from watching this mess! Your rant reviews are a valuable public service. What baffles me is why a popular and successful actress like Bai Lu would agree to take on such a badly conceived role. Do well-established actors not have the ability to speak up and say, "Hey, this script is unacceptably sexist, it needs to be changed!"??? Wang Hedi (Dylan Wang) played an arrogant, insufferably rude rich kid in "Meteor Garden" to great effect, but that was five years ago. And the FL, playing an 18 year old college freshman from a middle class family, puts his character in his place by the end of the first epuisode. He needs to move on to more mature roles. He did a great job playing the rich intern who tries to hide his wealth in "Never Give Up," an enjoyable comedy about corporate life. I also agree with your inclusion of "Hidden Love" as another drama to avoid. I dropped it after two episodes.

I have come to the conclusion that Chinese writers are bad at writing office dramas, they should stay completely away from it and focus on period dramas which I absolutely enjoy. I think the problem was the writing and directing and not necessarily the actors. They could have done so much magic with these two but missed the chance.

I'm surprise I'm still watching this dumpster fire of a drama. Every episode has been so cringey, not sure how anyone thought this was a good idea. I had pretty high expectations when I first started the drama and it went downhill so quickly. Apart from the lack of logic in the drama, I find that Dylan and Bai Lu have absolutely no chemistry in the drama. I also don't think it helps that Dylan gives off a creepy vibe when he is "serious". To sum this up...this drama is painful to watch and surprise that the douban rating isn't any lower (4.6 at the time of this comment).

I have been trying to watch this program and I first want to defend the actors who sign on to these series long before the final draft of the script is presented. The main leads are very good actors who were held back from their whole potentials. I blame the director and writers for ruining the chance of this story to have any life. It also may have fallen apart in editing. The storyline sounds like someone watched ither shows and wrote a script based on no life experience. I do not hold the actors responsible for this.

I really really really wanted to love this drama (Only For Love) but I felt like after 5 episodes…. I was kind of starting to be over it. Like… the plot…twist..everything.. really is just ridiculous. I love Dylan but I feel like on this series- he is playing dress up. He’s too young for this character. I’m already on the 31st episode but I have seen some bits and pieces of the last 5 remaining episodes. It is becoming a little bit more painful every time I watch another episode. There is a lot of fun and silly romcon cdramas that are not as annoying and crappy as only for love. My fun and easy watch list are :When i fly towards you, The love you give me, Perfect and casual, Once Married, You are my glory, Unforgetable Love etc The problem is not a cliche plot because everyone likes a good cliche, kdramas are masters at this genre, the problem is the weakness of the plot and the lack of logic in the characters actions. Honestly if you have a director using a cell phone call to interrupt kiss scenes more than 10 times it just means they are incompent and can not write good push and pull scenes. This drama also has the worst BFF/ love adviser in the history of cdramas, and her character is written so weakly, just beacause she goes out at night drinking and hooking up with guys she is this master of love and strong independent woman wtf? She is so shallow and insecure as a character. Im not criticing the hooking up part that is totally normal and peoples choice but why does this get used to show that a character is super cool? This drama is so crappy i was just hate watching and thinking it could not possibly get worse but it does. Im praticing my english so sorry for the mistakes.

Logically, he should rethink dating someone like her.

I really wanted to like this drama because of Bai Lu and Dylan Wang, but the writer really dropped the ball. What was he thinking? It comes across as such a useless drama with a petulant female who is always trying to decide if Shi Yan likes her or not. It was just a badly written drama which could have been such a romantic story.
