It frustrates me when people say this movie is cultural appropriation and Tom Cruise is a “white savior”. He didn’t save anything, and he is not the last samurai. He was merely a passenger to witness to the end of the Samurai. Katsumoto was the last samurai.
The Japanese witnessed the end of the staple of their culture. It’s like the Norwegians witnessing the end of the Vikings, and the Greeks witnessing the end of the Spartans. Truly a heartbreaking moment.
Such a great scene. I think it also helps us realize that at times we don't need to search for happiness and the good things in life. They are already there all around us and it's just a matter of perception. Just as he spoke of searching for a perfect blossom and then realizes that they are all perfect.
There is something hauntingly beautiful about the end of something. When a species or culture have all died out, the world will never see it's kind again, and all that is left is either the relief of it being over, or the beautiful memories and acknowledgment of when it once existed.
Miss these kinds of movies man, unbelievably top tier acting. Saw it in high school made me feel nothing, saw it again 5 years later and was over whelmed with my growth of emotions’
It always gets me that Katsumoto finds the right words for the end of his poem, while at the same time it is the end of his life. Lots of symbolism. Our lives are a lot like a poem or story. They all have a beginning, middle and end.
