A film that is all emotion I wonder what the working screenplay looked like Its now 40 years old We wanted more comments from Maria but alas she is now gone
Today, two years ago to the day Maria Schneider died at 58. I Loved last Tango. I saw it when it came out, now it ran this week on MGMhd. Brando, Bertolucci,Victoria Storaro and Barberi's music. Seeing it again still haunted me. The film never got the critical acclaim it deserved. Certainly Maria, didn't. Today it would never be nc17. It was haunting., beautiful and I'm glad to have seen it.
For myself even as a kid watching a movie in the dark with others in a theater was something for me Many times in my youth I would walk home with others from the theater for some reason they didn't see what I saw.
This is Marlon Brando's last "complete" film and its timeless . All the cameos that follow are just to fund Marlon's life style.. When " Tango" first came out it was seen as mostly trash but now 40 years later its all here just pure emotions just pure Brando and as the late Roger Ebert said " who else but Brando would be seen parking his gum at the most important end of his life. Haunting film that will stay with the viewer a long time " No Names"!
Yes, the film was rated X in 1969 and won the oscar for best picture Voight played Joe Buck and Hoffman played Enrico Rizzo This was a real breakthrough film in 1969
What now are revivals West Side Story Caroseul , Patterns, Mister Roberts I Nevre Sang for My Father Picnic Come Back Little Sheba....Two for The Seesaw The First time I saw West Side Story on stage I was blown away It was not even the orig cast
Others like " On The Waterfront " which is a great film Streetcar Named Desire a great film My all time Brando favorite is " Viva Zapata" 1952 about the Mexican Revolution Every line Brando says is impressive..esp when he tells the peasants " There are no leaders but yourselves" How to fight tyranny and keep your land Tony Quinn as Brando's brother wins an Oscar with very few lines Joe Wiseman plays a Stalinist Jean Peters is super
Without giving it all away Hoffman's first film " The Graduate" the last scene is of him in seat at the rear of a bus..In " Cowboy" he is in a bus on totally different circumstances , however , as I think about it The Circumstances do have something in common Great to talk about films is it not??
Paul Muni, E G Robinson and many others started in the Yiddish Theater...during the 1930's eastern European Jews came here (US) and were a mainstay in US Film Industry They might be considered the third wave The First ? Carl Laemmle, A Zukor, Jesse Lasky, Samuel Goldwyn, L B Mayer Warner Bros. and more
" Streetcar" changed the movie landscape Kazan , Brando and I must say I am not a fan at all of GWTW But Vivien Lieghs Blanche Dubois blows everything away I know Jessica Tandy did it on stage but we have no record of that Vivien is good at the part she is really scary At this time her private life was in tumult also Alex North's score changed the way jazz scores are presented .. The ending of this film is a knockout
If you have time 1) Dial up " On The Waterfront" on RU-vid Then click on the 3 minutes piece that has Brando and Eva Saint walking in a park..its a great scene Saint's first picture Brando's Oscar and Kazan directing and Len Bernsteins score..Its a natural scene between an inarticulate Terry/ Brando and a virginal Saint Note Bernsteins score does not come in till the end of the scene when Brando says " Its the nose" This is cimema
As a kid " Lawrence Arabia is being shown in our home town 4 hours long They had this big big cart and on the cart was the many many cannisters of film 70 MM that is The guys hauling it in said that it weighed over 200 lbs They would say Im crazy today by saying "you see this 2 oz DISK that movie that wesighed 220lbs now weighs 2 oz
Truthfully, this is Marlon Brando's last fully realized film. After this one its cameos , big pay checks for smaller films It's here that Bertolucci lets Marlon "move it on " with exciting results and when "names" comes up its too much its the end
***** I think thats a true statement After this film he started to have weight problems and like an Orson Welles, how does one top the early performances ? This is why Bertolucci's in allowing Brando great scope, makes this film timeless and generates great pathos in the characters....recall the last scene we see/hear Schneider rehearsing her event accounting to make sure she says it correctly if there was a correct way

Capolavoro allora non capito, Brando fantastico e come sempre bellissimo Ormai viene trasmessa con la censura ***** dove hai visto la versione senza censura, con la durata effettiva del film? L'hai vista all'epoca forse?
I am no longer going to try to explain that after this movie There was no Brando as viewers expected. All his films from here on were basically injections and lets try not to get his personal life which was a disaster strobed into his film work from " The Men" to this film he actually acted after this film just caricatures with big salaries
Obviously you know nothing about Cinema Pailine Kael, Schickel and a,ll the rest had a different opinion Maybe you should stick with bad acting like Cruise, Redford and all the rest
