The Last Time I Saw Paris - Stereo - Ann Sothern - Lady Be Good 1941

Ann Sothern sings this beautiful song, in stereo for the first time ever. I love how the stereo improves the mix - the mono mixdown for the film obscures the nicely dissonant chords under "squeaky horns". Now they're very clear.
The song was not written for the film "Lady Be Good" in 1941, but rather in response to the Nazi occupation of Paris. It's the only song Oscar Hammerstein ever wrote that was not "written to order", and the first Kern-Hammerstein piece whose words were written before the music.
Kern was so upset at winning the Academy Award for "Best Original Song" with a song that was not written for the film (and that had been published and recorded before the film was released), he petitioned the Motion Picture Academy to change the rules. Since then, a nominated song has to have been written specifically for the film in which it is performed.
Thanks to Art Smith for the stereo track!

So many people don’t know Anne Southern as as a serious actor. It’s nice to be reminded of her great talent.

The last time I saw Paris was in the early 1970's. I was working for Trans World Airlines in NYC and on my way home from Rome I spent a day there. A dream come true..went to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The streets were empty..it must have been the month long vacation. Have always been a Francophile....if I had a time machine I'd buy a ticket to the last half of the 19th century there !

I believe the pianist is Robert Young. Ann Sothern was charmingly beautiful with a plaintive voice.

Brought tears to my eyes. By far, this version by Ann Sothern of this beautiful emotional tribute to Paris is the best. Not only was she a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice but an excellent actress.

Who remembers the B24 bomber that was lost in the Libyan desert for 16 years? "The Lady Be Good" The pilot had named her after the title of THIS show, Tragic story. I feel I owe it to the crew to put this reminder here, that their deaths might not be totally in vain. Wiki it.

Remember this written right after the Nazis occupied Paris in June 1940. That's why it's so very sad.

Partly her choice! MGM head Louis B. Mayer paid $80,000 to purchase film rights to the Broadway production of "DuBarry Was a Lady" especially for Miss Sothern. When Sothern rejected the revised script, MGM decided to cast Lucille Ball.
