We pay tribute to the charming and elegant dancing star Marge Champion with our 2014 celebration of the 50th anniversary of “Hello, Dolly!” Ms. Champion died October 21, 2020 at the age of 101.
Joining her on the episode were Sondra Lee who played "Minnie Fay" in the original cast of Hello, Dolly! and Lee Roy Reams who played "Cornelius Hackl" in the 1978 revival (and directed the 1995 revival).
Ms. Champion (who had worked as a professional dancer since she was 14) assisted her then-husband, the late director/choreographer Gower Champion while he was creating the musical classic and had wonderful tales to tell about the experience. Original tape date: January 17, 2014. First aired: March 1, 2014.

RIM Marge Champion. It's not a loss, it's a celebration to achieve 101.

Marge Champion was a legend, SO well-spoken with a memory like a steel trap. She has long, individual interviews on YT which are mesmerizing. In other news, it was off-putting to hear Sondra (WHO?) Lee pronounce herself a showstopper......

It's a shame Marge Champion was cut off so often by Sondra Lee

I couldn't watch this through thanks to Sondra Lee. I got angry enough to give up on the whole interview. What a pain! I'm uncomfortable disliking people but with her I'll make an exception. They have to have a way to edit her out so I can watch it.

Sondra Lee was also Tiger Lily in productions of 'Peter Pan' with Mary Martin.

I was thrilled to see Carol Channing, aka "Dolly", at the Sacramento Community Center Theater around 1995 and the audience loved her voracious eating scene at Harmonia Gardens. Also honored that she & I attended the same Lowell High School in San Francisco (although decades apart) where the school's theater is named in her honor. She returned to her alma mater in the late 70's, when I attended, and mingled with the students. I believe she currently resides in Modesto, CA and is 95 years young! What a fabulous career she had in theater & movies, but she will always be the one & only "Dolly Gallagher Levi".

Millions more would have been thrilled had Carol Channing appeared in the film version. A better fit than Barbara Streisand.

@@rayfridley6649 Thank you for replying to my 5-year old comment. I think I read that Carol Channing was very disappointed for not being chosen to star in the “Hello Dolly” musical movie, directed by Gene Kelly. As musicals were dying in the late ‘60’s, they wanted a big name star such as Streisand, now worldly famous from “Funny Girl”. Although Barbra was much younger than the character, she had the voice and charisma for the Dolly role. Of course, Carol will always be the most favorite Dolly, as she continued to portray her signature role in live theater and tours for so many years. I am so glad to have seen Carol’s live performance in 1995. Carol Channing (January 31, 1921 - January 15, 2019) who passed away at age 97, performed Dolly over 5,000 times! When she crossed over, they all welcomed her home singing "Hello, Dolly!....it's so nice to have you back where you belong!" 💗

This was a really great one. LeRoy should do Horace now... he is still great! The song at the end was outstanding.

Marge has eye makeup (eye liner and mascara) on her left eye but not on her right. She recently passed away at age 101 on October 21, 2020. RIP

Every time I see Marge Champion I think of Elaine Stritch’s story about her loooooong exit from the final scene of The Women when they were in it together.

I have read that Bob Merrill , the composer of Carnival, was brought in during the pre Broadway opening and that he wrote Before The Parade Passes By and one other song in the show. Does anyone know if this is true ?

Great episode. Thank you for sharing. One question: why does Lee Roy Reams' outfit change when he does that wonderful song? Was it taped on another day? Just curious!

Yes, it was taped a different day.

That pianist at the beginning was of course Jerry Herman, the composer of hello Dolly. Considering how old he is I think you did a wonderful job playing it.

Dawn Collings: “Well Horace”, she’s up there now along the original choices for the role, Ethel Merman and Nanette Fabray.

Oh my, Susan Haskins, you can't carry a tune. Don't sing. Why are you even onstage? You intrude on everything. Stay in your office.
