Rosemary Lane & Rudy Vallee perform a number from the 1938 musical "Gold Diggers in Paris" Musical number staged by Busby Berkeley. I don't own the rights, Just an old VHS copy from television.
I love the lyrics to this song, and its unusual memorable melody. I love the choreography, the scene sets ups, the chorus girls, and heck just about everything else that goes along with it.
Thanks SO much for this. This tune from Pepe Le Peu Warner Bros cartoons was in my head for years and you finally figured it out for me. Now I wonder if there is any way to get a mp3 of this for my IPod. Once again Thanks. It's such a great tune, perfect for Pepe.
Thanks for posting! I've never seen Goddiggers of 1938, and this lackluster number won't send me hunting for it. Seems like even Buzz could not generate any enthusiasm for this film, understandable after doing so many already.
I also learned these tunes through cartoons. I did an album of 12 of them performed pretty much in their entirety. While researching the album, I could find some recordings to learn from but a lot of the time there weren't available MP3s. For this song, I learned it directly from the DVD of this film. If you Google "The Latin Quarter" +Rudy Vallee there seems to be something on Amazon UK. Hard to tell from the sample whether it's a knock-off, but it's definitely not OSTR.
You should have mentioned the lead singer Rosemary Lane who who came from a family a sister actresses, except that she appears in the clip almost the whole time. A very pretty looking dame nonetheless.
Thanks for the information! That musical segment is a rather clumsy fit and what you say explains a lot. I really didn't know who that particular "spoof" band was, but I agree that it is a cruder version of the stuff Spike Jones made so entertainly smooth (and silly). Input appreciated!
You've got a good ear. This song was written in the style of the French equivalent of what would be called Music Hall in Britain or vaudeville in America (think Josephine Baker). When Fred Ebb and John Kander wrote the music for "The Happy Time " in 1968, since the play is set in France in the 1920's, the music style they chose for "Life of the Party" was French can-can/vaudeville, which is the style of this song, written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin in 1937.
Oh! You owe it to yourself to watch some Pepe Le Pew (correct spelling) cartoons immediately! One of the best of the classics, and a great send-up of the Hollywood version of Pepe le Moko.
I found this after watching "Daffys Southern Exposure". The fox and weasel dressed up as old ladies feeding Daffy to this song. This was featured in several Looney Tunes cartoons.
@indiana600610 You're welcome! When I was a kid they played this tune (with different lyrics) in an old Warner Bros. Porky Pig cartoon and it got stuck in my head. Was surprised to discover this film so many years later.
@@kidfil0947 Okay, man, before you condescend to comment, make sure you know how to recognize an offended person from a person who takes it with humor.
This obviously was the finale of the film, with the totally incongruous "I Wanna Go Back To Bali" shoehorned into the supposed Latin Quarter of Gay Paree, to reprise it from earlier in the movie.
the clips with Schnicklefritz were edited into this movie after most of it was finished-i really think Freddie Fisher was a rather pale version of what Spike Jones did a lot better a few years later
Ha! I never saw the Pepe Le Peu cartoon, but, as you say, it's a perfect tune for him. So many of those old Warner cartoons used such memorable melodies...it was only later that I've come to find that so many tunes were drawn from their vast library of obscure films. And if you ever find an Mp3 of it, please let ME know.
Yes, me too! This song has been in my head since I was a kid, thanks to Looney Tunes. Daffy Duck does it a couple times in drag, and my favorite version is in Daffy's Southern Exposure, where they use the melody, but lyrics to fit the situation. Great stuff. Thanks for posting!
Yeah, I can find it, I just spent about 2 hours trying to find "Pepe Le Pew" singing "The Latin Quarter". I didn't realize it was "Daffy Duck" from that cartoon when I was a kid. It took me half an hour to find that, RU-vid isn't the only website in the world. The majority of the songs in Gold Diggers in Paris were written by the team of Harry Warren (music) and Al Dubin (lyrics), who contributed many of the songs in the Gold Diggers series and other Warner Bros. musicals. "Latin Quarter" (a song which was later used frequently in Warner Bros. cartoons featuring Pepé Le Pew), (I still haven't found a Pepe Le Pew verison. However, here's a Daffy Duck version on Dailymotion, the song starts at about the 3;10 mark of "Daffy's Inn Trouble"--www.dailymotion.com/video/x66bzja
Daffy Duck bought me here So dis is Gay Paree Won’t you come along with me We’re going down to see The Latin Quarter! Put on your old beret And sing The Marseilles And let the wine flow like water… water… water… water
+Mark Mork I want to do Paree For there are things to see And if you don’t show me, ‘twould be a pity But we don’t need to go. For in my studio I’m all equipped to show the city Come on and watch me, closely You’ll see Just what I mean. I’ll paint you a scene I think the place to start should be the quaintest part That section called Montmartre, The Latin Quarter I simply flick my wrist and give the brush a twist There goes…oh la la la oh la la la - oh la la la - oh la la la I love the way you paint You take a gal who ain’t And paint her as a saint (for just a quarter) She poses just for art She does it from the heart She does it a la carte (you taught her) That gal from Armentieres Who's been around for years Will show you souvenirs the soldiers brought her She owes a lot of thanks To quite a lot of Yanks For what a lot of Francs they brought her Come on and parlez francaise Their way Oh la la la Comme si, comme sa That’s all the Frenchman sing That’s how they have their fling That’s how the Frenchman swing the Latin Quarter They’re fifty million strong And they can’t all be wrong Let’s go…oh la la la Music Interlude So this is gay Paree Come on along with me We're stepping out to see The Latin Quarter Put on your old beret, we'll sing the marciee And put our wine away like water Come on and parlez francaise Their way Oh la la la Comme si, comme sa That’s all the Frenchman sing That’s how they have their fling That’s how the Frenchman swing the Latin Quarter They’re fifty million strong And they can’t all be wrong Let’s go…oh la la la Music Interlude leads to “I Wanna go Back To Bali” It looks like our back alley But I still love it more For when the gals meet you down at the pier They wear less than the ladies do here If the day and the vision is clear You can see the shore Ohhh I wanna go back to Bali Where there ain’t such a word as no Where to hug and squeeze the Balinese is always apropos The Interlaken Valley may be the place to go Still I wanna go back, and I’m gonna go back to Bali I wanna go back to Bali To the island of sunny skies You can see those scenes in magazines But you never can see the flies It looks like our back alley But still I love it more For when the gals meet you down at the pier They wear less than the ladies do here If the day and the vision is clear You can see the shore I wanna go back to Bali Where there ain’t such a word as no Where to hug and squeeze the Balinese is always apropos The Interlaken Valley may be the place to go Still I wanna go back, and I’m gonna go back to Bali
