Dr. Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) is a brilliant scientist obsessed with perfecting virtual reality software. When his experiments on animals fail, he finds the ideal substitute - Jobe Smith (Jeff Fahey), a slow-witted gardener. Dr. Angelo's goal is to benefit his human guinea pig and ultimately mankind itself, but evil lurks the guise of "the Shop," a shadowy group that seeks to use the technology to create an invincible war machine. It's pretty much a madman offers to mow the lawn of a neighbor in order of him giving praise to "PAN" (but by "mowing" , he means running around naked on the lawn while the lawnmower roams unattended and he eats the grass the mower mows, including a dead groundhog). The man calls the police, but the lawnmower runs into his house and kills him, leaving his remains scattered on the lawn). The screenwriters had a ready script called CYBER GOD, and only added elements of the short story to one scene; where the kid's dad dies (just so they could "legally" put Stephen King's name on it).

Transcendence was a similar concept and sucked ass. Nobody talks about Lawnmower Man and its "great story" but rather it's visual effects that were pushing CGI in movies back in the day. However, there is no need for that today seeing how much CGI is all around in any blockbuster anyway. With that said, your idea for a remake is retarded.

There are so many people who say The Lawnmower Man is dated, and it is, but I don't think the film suffers from it. It becomes a sort of time capsule of early 90s anticipations (and fears) of computer technology. A bunch of people want to see a remake, but I don't see how that could work. Our view of virtual reality is far more mundane nowadays, whereas back then it was regarded as damn near magical.

It's dated 1992 - which is a fine date to be dated! The view of the future back then was so much more imaginative - same can be said for the 80s too - just look at Knight Rider from then vs the horrible remake that had in the 2010s. K.I.T.T. had wit and a personality whereas in the remake they just made him sound like a robot trying to sound like a human. I think the turning point came around the last James Bond movie: Die Another Day, when people criticized it for the invisible car claiming "that could never happen" and then they got rid of James Bond, replaced him with a dumb thug and got all 'serious' by taking away all of the gadgets. Terminator suffered a similar fate of going all 'serious' but ironically the machines there became less realistic having to communicate with each other by spoken word and getting emotional when things didn't go their way. I miss the imagination, creativity and lack of stupidity of the 90s...

@@r3d0c To be fair, the movie did perform moderately well at the box office and virtual reality is still a relevant subject. So it isn't impossible for someone to get the idea of remaking it. I do think any remake would almost certainly suck though (also I can't imagine they could have "literal retard is manipulated and turns into a megalomaniacal genius" as a plot point.)

@@JC-yy8iv Technically, there's a very loose connection to Stephen King's Firestarter, as the main bad guys are a shadowy government agency called 'The Shop", but even so it was still just a cheap attempt to have a famous name attached to the movie as you say.

@@vcente671 Offcourse it's difficult to compare because this film was made way back in 1992. We didn't know how technology would advance yet this film was very much accurate. EEAAO was garbage. It won awards not on merit but because the Oscars wanted to show diversity by pampering the Asian ego. Atleast they should've chosen any other Asian film which was way superior that year.

I remember when virtual reality things came out. Union Station in ST.LOUIS had a area just for these awsome times . They also had a hooters chicken on top level lol. Being suspended from school in the 90s rocked . I didn't start the fight :)

I read Flowers for Algernon. The two stories are *very* similar. Except, Algernon becomes increasingly more violent the more intelligent he becomes (oh and he doesn't enter virtual reality either).
