The Lawrence Barn Dance Association (LBDA) invites local residents to put on their dancing shoes - or cowboy boots - and join in an activity that’s been building community for centuries.
The group organizes monthly contra dances that feature local bands playing live music. All ages, identities, and skill levels are welcome. LBDA is especially focused on becoming more inclusive as younger generations of dancers emerge. This includes making changes toward more gender-neutral language, like swapping out “ladies and gents” for “larks and ravens,” referring to the dance partners on the left and right.
This episode of The 785 gives an inside look into LBDA’s latest Contra Dance, held Sat Nov 11 at Woodlawn Elementary School in North Lawrence. You’ll hear from the LBDA board members, see the smiles of everyone learning barn dance basics during the beginner lesson, and watch the dance moves of everyone on the floor during the main event.
Whether you’re attending an LBDA event to dance or just to watch, this special offering is something worth knowing about in Lawrence, KS.
