It was one of the pioneers of satellite television here in the UK, but despite its presence, is the SKY logo quite simply one of the LAZIEST in all of TV? We journey through the brands look, from the beginnings in the mid-80s, all the way up until the present day...

This could also be compared to DStv in South Africa, which is broadcast all over Sub-Saharan Africa and is very similar to Sky, even their flagship channels are extremely similar (Sky One - M-Net, Sky Sports - SuperSport, etc.) DStv has been using their current logo since its launch in 1995, with a modified version in use since 2010.

I think the best logo was when they switched to the glossy glass logo with the clouds behind it, i also remember seeing the vans around with the logo on the side, which was really nice to see, but i don't really remember the older logo's tbh.

As a Yank, I find it crazy how often British TV channels change their logos. I was born in 1987, and as such, ITV has had 5 different logos in my lifetime. The BBC has changed their corporate logo at least 4 times since I came into this world. Compare that with CBS here in the United States which has had the same "Eye" logo since 1951. ABC has had essentially the same logo since 1962, although they made a slight modification in 2021. NBC is probably the least consistent of the old Big Three, having changed their logo until several times until settling on the 6-feather Peacock on their 60th anniversary in 1986 which they still have today. Our "fourth network" Fox, also a Rupert Murdoch property, hasn't been exactly consistent with their logo in their 38 year history, sometimes using the searchlights of the 20th Century Fox logo and then just using the text "FOX." PBS, our public broadcaster has used at least 3 (or 4 if you want to count the 1984 logo in a circle used from 1998-2019) logos. The first was a VERY 1970's funky tricolor abstract cut "PBS" letters with the "P" looking like a leftward pointing face to represent the "public." Then in 1984, it was redesigned to flip the "P-Head" to face right and "shadow" over another, the same design they still follow to this day. Then we have cable powerhouse channel HBO which first used their current version of their logo since 1981, although the essential design goes back all the way to 1975, shortly before they went national on satellite. The original iteration of the HBO logo had the B and O more overlapped, leading to concerns that it looked more like "HEO" to the viewer than "HBO."

I always assumed the swoosh/arc in the the 98/99 logos was to evoke the smaller digital minidishes where as the 89/93 ones were the dustbin lid analogue dishes.

I think the different Sky logos tell a story. The first 1980s and early 1990s logos look that way because Sky wanted to paint themselves as this brasnd new, disruptive TV company, here to skae up British television, using space age technology straight out of science fiction! The next 1990s logos were the most 1990s of 1990s design! The company was nowtrying to market itself as fashionable, trendy and very much of the time. The problem is the most of the time designs end up being the most dated. The sans-serif logo with the curve was Sky trying to throw off the brash whippersnapper look, now they were trying to market thamselves as having arrived, trying to tell everyone thst they were now an established part of British television. Returning to a font more like the classic font is an acknowledgement that they actually have arrived. That multichannel TV that Sky ushered in was now the norm and they no longer needed to shout about their existence. That's why they've slowed down on the new looks and just refine their logo over years instead of months.

The important thing about the logo is the nod to it's origin channel. The font used for Sky is the same font used for Satellite. Including that stylized back to front Z to form the S.

The mid-00s/early 10s Sky channel branding was rather under rated. Pushing that shiny, modern, Vista-esque swoop before ITV, and the Sky 1 idents were rather nice in the Idiot Abroad era.

I like the variety they've had in idents. My favourite era was the Sky One with the handwritten "one "as opposed to the blocky version. Came alongside the promo video "we're the one" which was really catchy. Think it's on RU-vid, warning you'll be hunming it all day!

The interesting thing with the 98 rebrand was 2 logos were used. There was a corporate logo then there was the completely different font for the channel logos. I never understood this and it’s probably why that logo didn’t last long. From circa 2001 the channels started to use the corporate font but in upper case. I don’t think it was until 2009 rebrand that the channel logos went back to using the same logo as corporate.

I personally like 98-99. It gives me those almost-American style satellite company vibes which I like, the bold makes it feel serious almost like 'we're the big guns/top players' and I liked the flick they were doing in 98-99 and 99-2001, the flick reminds me of a satellite dish which was it's main USP.

Never looked at this logo this closely before and yeah since i was born in 2001, I've never seen it change much. The menus for sky has changed, would like to see the evolution of sky itself and what they offered over the years. It's funny how they kept the k and y joined together as if i was designing it i wouldn't of have them connected. But yeah its just iconic now even if it's not perfect

Maybe Sky should look at logos from channels like BBC One and Channel for inspiration without straight up copying them like what ITV did to the BBC. I think the HD blue ‘1’ logo Sky used is the best, but that’s my opinion. 👍👍👍

I honestly think the ITV gradient logo is inspired by the Sky one. Sky were one of the last brands to remove the Windows Vista-eque glossy effects. They just can't get rid of them - even now the Sky logo and the Sky Sports and other channel logos has a light swoosh across it.

It's NOT lazy, it is stylish, iconic and timeless, unlike the current BBC logo. Also bear in mind that each of the Sky logos up until 1998 were essentially an evolution of the previous one: The 1989 logo was just the “Sky” from the 1984 Sky Channel logo with a circle around it. The 1993 logo was virtually identical to the 1989 one with the tail of the “Y” straightened. The 1995 logo took the rectangle in the 1993 channel logos and merged the Sky logo into it, making it a “tombstone” with the Sky logo being slightly tilted. As pointed out above, the 1997 logo is basically an inverse video of the 1995 one with 3D added. What might amaze people today is that not only did Sky change it’s corporate logo that frequently, but each time it did the entire suite of Sky branded channels got a complete makeover overnight (and that’s not counting 1996, where the logo didn’t change but all the channels got redone idents with different music and animation).

I think it's nostalgia but the tombstone era looked the best to me. When I was a kid (With only the standard 4/5 channels) it'd blow my mind if I was ever at a friends house and would catch the idents. They were soooo much more glossy and big budget looking compared to terrestrial idents of the mid-90s. People dismissed them as "American" but that's what us kids wanted 😁 I'm surprised they only lasted two years as they really stuck in my mind. I think colours and bevels on idents are back out of fashion again across the board sadly.

Only on its own. But even then Sky is such a long standing brand in Europe that they can get away with that, a bit like the BBC Blocks - it's just 3 white boxes, but everyone knows it's the BBC. Either in the context of the wider design used across the network for about a decade and a bit, or in the context of it being an abstract version of what came before, the Sky brand is fine. Losing the curve made sense in as much as satellite dishes not being a thing anymore, but as an attention grabbing logo, it was bad to drop it. It wouldn't have mattered that it doesn’t mean anything anymore, it would still add something. So, yes and no, really.
