Hi Todd... I wanted to thank you for takeout the time to this awesome videos. You literally made listening about the FOIs a fun experience and I’m happy to report that I passed my CFI ride today in the first try. Thank you very much!!
What awesome news that is!! I am so glad that I could help you to achieve your goals! Share my content with your other CFI friends if you would, please.
Greeeeat videos, I’m doing my Cfi in NJ. I’m watching this videos waiting for passangers( still drive Uber) at Newark International Airport. Congrats 👍🏻✈️
Todd, your videos are awesome! I really like the way how you explain all that stuff. My whole flight school is watching you and it’s super helpful. Thank you one more time! Hope to see one day and say: “look what u did to me, now I’m freaking CFI 😂”
Todd, can you give me an example of a behaviorism trait you'd teach your student, and a cognitive trait you'd teach your student. Then let me know if you think my examples are good enough> Behaviorism : Your student pitches for exactly 56KTS on the initial climb on a short field takeoff to clear the "50 foot obstacle", I praise the student for doing so, and now their behavior has been reinforced so that they will more frequently pitch for that airspeed on the applicable takeoff Cognitive : Now that your student has learned on the ground what happens to their course when they fly in crosswind conditions without correcting, they can now go up and maintain their desired course across the ground during x-wind conditions.
One example of behaivorism would be this RU-vid channel. I know, because I have trained thousands of new instructors, that they do not like the FOIs, and are very reluctant to study and learn them. So, I have to use that knowledge to be a better instructor. I use comedy and plain language, along with positive reinforcement, to let the CFI student know that there is light at the end of that proverbial tunnel. Your example is sufficient for this. With Cognitive Theory, an example would be any learning event where the student would get better over time because they have learned from their experiences. So, always bring in Scenario-Based Training (SBT) when you talk about this. For your example, I would ensure that you state some additional facts, such as the student has learned to correct for both left and right cross winds from multiple XC trips they have conducted.
I’m not sure the discussion of blocked practice is correct. In this context, blocking refers to the organization of practice, specifically, repeating the same thing over and over again. For instance, practicing landings for two hours straight. The video seemed to discuss it as though it referred to an obstacle to learning, i.e., a different meaning for “blocked.”
Hi, Michael. The discussion for Blocked Practice is correct. Your scenario is the same as mine, where the learner is performing something, but the conceptual nature of the event is not registering. The learner is capable of doing the maneuver, but the actual learning has been "blocked" due to the variance in training being minimized or nonexistent. I hope this helps to clarify my statement on this at 49:50 in the video.
I was watching this in a classroom and someone walked in and said "Oh hell yes, Todd Shellnutt, the original GOAT CFI!" 🤣 The Lionel Messi of flight instruction.
Hello Everyone. The way AIH (FAA-H-8083-9B) covers the educational learning theories is that there are two: Behaviorism and Cognitive. It further explains that the cognitive theory has four derivatives: information processing, constructivism, HOTS, and SBT. Is that not correct? Todd presents four theories total: behaviorism, information processing, cognitive, and constructivism. Is there a discrepancy. Todd, Thank you for this amazing series of videos on FOIs. Much appreciate it!
Todd your videos are very engaging and very good. One thing that would take your videos from very good to great, is if you added text as you discussed an acronym or definition etc. In other words, edit your videos so as to add the words/acronym/definition you are explaining...this would enhance your discussion on that subject.
Is it just me or was the cognitive domain kind of skipped and abruptly changed into talking about the basic levels of learning, then moved onto the affective domain?
@@ToddShellnuttCPC No worries! The only parts of the cognitive domain I'm not too sure about is the synthesis step as it relates to the cognitive learning of a stall. This is what I have so far: Remembering --> definition of stall Understanding --> consequence of stall Application --> practicing stall recovery Analysis --> examining the physics behind a stall Synthesis --> creating a diagram of how a stall happens (?) Evaluate --> dangers of stall (falling out of the sky on short final or takeoff is probably not a good thing!) Other than that, thank you for this series, Todd! It's been super helpful so far in creating my own lesson plans. So far, I think the biggest takeaway for me is formatting my lesson plans in a way where I define each concept and then provide a relevant example as it pertains to my future students' training to show my understanding to the DPE, as it seems like you do in these videos. I'm really enjoying learning about FOIs and looking forward to becoming a flight instructor soon!
Man I love the way you make it look easy :) great work Todd , tons of appreciation for yr effort, people like you Make the aviation industry different than any other ! On a personal note : may I ask which school you instruct in, am planning to do my CFI in June 👍🏽
Thanks for the Kudos @MoeTourky. I work for ATP Flight School. Unfortunately, ATP does not offer independent courses any longer, but I would love to help you find a seasoned Pro-CFI in your area. Let me know if you would like my help.
People swear by Todd and I really like his teaching style. But man, I just wish he threw in some PowerPoint slides or something to help drive the points home. Edit: ok I found some videos with his power points. Going to join his Patreon now!
Thank you Todd, absolutely great content. My CFI initial check ride is in a couple weeks and this has really helped me be excited for the ride rather than dread it. FOI’s have been miserable until listening to this. I feel I understand the content well and have a clear plan of action to take charge and teach my DPE through the check ride. Great stuff. Thanks again.
Thanks for taking the time to create these videos. I have a question regarding the note book. In the first video you set us up for putting our notebooks together, but I missed where you actually tell us what goes into it. Similarly, you said how important taking was, but I haven seen or heard anything about creating or using the tabs since. Do you have other vids that go into the mechanics of getting organized? Again, thanks for putting these videos together. My CFI expired in the mid 80s. I am currently working on my CFII as a way to get it reinstated. (The ride is schedule for 2/12). Your FOI presentations are a great refresher.
No - I do not plan on posting all of the technical tasks here on my YT channel - the critics would pick me apart. I do have a few over on my Patreon channel that shows how I personally present some of the technical subject areas (TSA), such as airspace, runway incursions, and a few others. The main objective here for me is to show how to teach them, and not to get too far into the weeds with all data that may be incorporated within a specific TSA.
Todd, thanks for all the wealth of knowledge. I will be taking my CFI in the next 2 months or so. I got a question in reference to the rest of the videos found on Patreon... is the fee only one time or is a monthly fee to watch the videos? Say the Gold Tier? Please clarify. Thanks
sfo sfo It is a set fee each month, so if I post any new content, you’d pay just the one for the tier you join at. If I post no content for the month, you pay nothing.
@@ToddShellnuttCPC One last thing, I want to make sure I understand. If I join the 'gold tier' and you happen to make 5 videos for that month I will get charge $100 for that month? However if you don't make videos for the next two months I will not get charge anything? On another note, your lowest tier (bronze) I get charge the $10, but I only get access to 2 videos? If I am trying to get access to ALL your FOI videos i have to join the gold tier otherwise I will not have access to the rest of those videos? Did I get it right? Thanks for your attention, before I found your videos I had never heard of Patreon so I'm confused about the charges??
This, sir is pure gold! If you can’t entertain yourself, how in the heck are you supposed to keep others entertained?? Gear up, student first learning how to taxi.. uff I just love it. Thanks Todd!
