Just FYI Victorinox has a decent warranty. I accidentally destroyed one of my SAKs and sent it in and even explained what happend and it was 100% entirely my fault and they sent me back a new one and I just paid postage. They say their warranty doesnt cover alot of things but I think they secretly do.
He chose victorianox throughout the WHOLE video then switched up at the end. Every Leatherman I have ever had has broken, I get tired of sending them back to be fixed, although they always have fixed them. Ordered my first Victorinox. Cant wait to check it out
you probably dont give a damn but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid forgot the login password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Dalton Alfonso i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I bought the first generation of the Wave when Leatherman first brought it out. Back then only the blades locked and the other tools did not. Also the head of the flat head screwdriver was quite a bit rounded at the corners. I can't recall if it came with the small scissors or some other tool. After a year of so of having it, I tried buying the Victorinox Spirit which at that time was about 50% more expensive than that 1st gen Wave, and I do recall part of the reason I bought the Spirit was for its scissors. The quality control on the Spirit was much better in that the tools came out very smoothly, all acting off of the same locking mechanism, and overall felt much better in the hand. I gave my Leatherman to friend because I ended up carrying the Spirit instead. I'm glad to see that Leatherman has made much improvements to the Wave since then. I haven't bought the current version of the Wave yet since I'm still satisfied with the Spirit and I'm not really a collector of multitools (though I do collect and buy more pocket knives than I'll ever need so I understand those who might buy multiple multitools just to have them). I think the bit holder option and replaceable cutting jaws on the current Wave are awesome options.
Thanks for your input buddy. Now that I’ve had a multitool with scissors I don’t think I would get one with out even though most of the time I have a Leatherman raptor set on me I love the convenience of the multitool scissors.
Just wanted to comment on the locking system of the Victorinox. In many countries in Europe a knife that can be opened and then unlocked with one hand is not allowed so this unlocking mechanism is on purpose two haned from the Vic so that the tool is legal in Europe.
Agoston Egyhazy Thanks so much for the info. I know we sometimes think we’re the center of the universe here and don’t realize there’s a whole world out there that’s different. Take care and stay safe buddy.
@@TheBigCanucker He is right for the most part. Leatherman knives are the standard across german workers. Because the law does not allow leatherman knives for private use, it is allowed to be used at work, if you work a craft profession. And there it is the common standard to have a leatherman, so they are quite robust! Greetings from germany :)
Tim R Thank you so much for the info I really appreciate it. I work for Wurth so when I win a trip to see the head office in Künzelsau I should leave my Spyderco Advocate home and just carry my Wave or Surge....Good to know buddy stay safe.
Ah! As I was watching the video, I was thinking it must be a legal thing in Europe. I'm not surprised by your post. ☺️ I'm from the US but I know Europe is a bit more strict on the weapons. That is also why I think they did not add a sharp tip on the blade for the Victorinox?
@@Northanteus There's another version of this same Victorinox multitool which has a more standard drop point blade with a sharp tip, as do most other Victorinox's. This flat end blade is quite a practical work configuration when you want to cut through something tough (the serrations are viciously sharp) but don't want a point to damage someone/something on the thrust. More of a tool than an everyday blade I guess, if you choose to have it. Unfortunately the video didn't show the awl, it has a brutal point which would make a very effective weapon.
I had this leatherman for almost 6 months, used it a lot while buiding a house. I kept it in original pouch, wiped it up after each use to keep it clean. It had no contact with water,, but it developed rust spots anyway. Rust was on the blade, pliers, saw, inside the tool. This never happened to any of my victorinox sak. I also have a cheap crappy no-name multitool which took a fair amount of abuse as I don't care whether it brakes or not. It had numerous contacts with water and has never been wiped at all. No rust on it
bobbobowski Hey Bob sorry to hear that I’m not too sure what to say. I’ve not had any rusting issues, but then again I live in quite a dry part of Canada. These are pretty evenly matched and if your experience is more positive with the SAK it wouldn’t surprise me. Take care and thanks for the info stay safe buddy.
Leatherman >>> Victorinox. SAK>>>> LM knives. If I were living in a coastal area with salt water I would switch to Victorinox though. Their steel never rusts
If you're already carrying an entire 1/4" bit holder adapter, then you might as well get the Victorinox Swiss tool ratchet driver which is stronger and easier to use.
I have a skeletool cx and I’m picking up the wave plus tomorrow. I needed something compact with a scissors so that I could ditch the ones I carry. Great comparison. I’m hoping to buy an extender, belt clip and bit kit soon too.
Hello! Great review! I believe the Leatherman has an edge file as opposed to a metal saw...the XC is designed so that you can carry a dedicated folder as your primary and the serrated as your secondary...I have the Swisstool X, and many of your observations of the XC can be applied to the X...I wish I had the XC's chisel combo tool in the X, it seems to be more versatile...I made similar adjustments to my New Wave(2nd Gen) and I bought the X with ratchet; to give me additional capability for the X...subbed...Good job!
Just found your channel, love the name. Great detailed vid. I have 5 leatherman tools and love them. They are so utilitarian and they look the part. You can beat the tar out of them and they ask for more. But the Victorinox is so classy and slick. I would still go with leatherman, but the Victorinox has its place and I swap back and forth between the two depending on where I’m going and what I’m doing.
I have both and while both are great tools, I still prefer the Wave. Here's a breakdown for those who are wondering: Spirit X: + Looks sleek when closed + Pliers are very comfortable to hold + Satisfying clicks when opened and closed + Has an awl + and a chisel + Great can opener - File is worse than the Wave - I know it's a tool, but glossy metal is fingerprint magnet - Blade is not one handed (unless you get the MX) - Scissors really suck Now the Wave Plus: + Pliers open wider than the SpiritX + Amazing diamond coated file + Way better scissors + One handed Blades + Serrated blade + Replaceable wire cutters + Glasses/watch screwdrivers + Ruler (very handy) + Pocket clip + Cheaper - Heavier (8.5oz vs 7.4oz), but also shorter in length compared to the SpiritX - Some tools are harder to open and not on the outside
After 2 years opening and closing the spirit x velcro it no longer holds closed. I am a handy man for apartments and it does get a TON of use. Way more probably than most people.
Cool thanks for the info…by the way how is the tool holding up. I use mine, but with using and reviewing a lot of multi tools I rarely get to see the long term use of them and love hearing people who do use them long term their opinion. Take care.
@@TheBigCanucker still super tight, zero signs of wear. I forgot to mention that I use it for fishing as well. It's not just put through work use but also lots of water, fish mouths, work on my motorcycle and old cars. On my leatherman, tools have broken, on the Swisstool, nothing broken.
@@stickfiguretree5411oh nice, that's a great positive on the victorinox, after 2 or so more years, is it still the case? I'm looking to buy a multi tool like this for general use around the house.
My. New gen Surge is always on my side. Bought a second for a back up, incase I lose this one or send one off for warrentee, ill always have one with me. And you have the get use out of the leathermans to break them in to be nice n smooth. Great video. And i can use 1/4 inch bits in my surge bit extender. Maybe its a new thing.
For me it’s so close but I would choose the wave for the fact I can use my modded bit driver and hence all the regular 1/4 inch bits. Thanks for sharing take care.
@PaleBlueDot I’m not sure what context your looking for? It’s so close as they are both great tools and 9m lucky to be able to carry both, but if an imaginary situation came up and I had to choose one I would choose the wave because I can use a modified bit holder with it to allow me to use any 1/4 inch bit increasing the utility for me and edging out the Spirit. I hope this is what you were looking for. Take care and stay safe.
I bought a surge 2 weeks ago and after i used a friend’s Victorinox I regretted my purchase. Im a swiss army knife user for 30 years and nothing compares, not even by a mile, the Victorinox ergonomics precision quality and how well made everything is. If it was now i would trade the surge with a spirit with eyes closed.
nice review! imho the only thing better on Leatherman is the wood saw. i owned a Surge and i give it away. 2 screwdrivers broke and i reshaped them, the serrated knife went dull after i cut a plastic zip tie. also the scissors. my swistool is looking a lil different. i was able to add two bits with socket of 7 and 8mm. the only thing i really miss on Swistool spirit plus ratchet is a serrated blade. as i said, i liked alot the comparison, im aware that my Surgecould be an exception. i also own a Leatherman PS4 and i love it. very good quality.
I think I’m going to try and save for a PS4, but there’s so much steel so little time..lol. Take care. Sorry it took so long to get back to you I just discovered my notification was turned off for a bit...take care.
Iv used a surge for forever and nothing has broke on me. Also I cut plastic straps on cardboard bales everyday and the serrated blade holds up good for a few days before I sharpen it.... I also cut alot of ratchet straps etc.
The VIC has way better side cutters than the Leatherman. I have both tools and the VIC can easily cut a nail or barbwire fencing right in two without causing an issue for the teeth while my leatherman side cutters get badly damaged cutting fencing. I’ve even had my leatherman side cutters have one of the replaceable blades fall out completely on the job leaving me hanging with nothing at all out on a job. Even after cutting barb wire and finish nails with the VIC side cutters it’s still able to gently strip wires even after hard use. I know I could pull that stupid wire stripper blade out but to trim wire but why bother.
Nice to know for sure. I know I’ve spoken to a few EDC folks who don’t like the Leatherman side cutters. I have had good luck with both types the replaceable and the one piece. Anyway take care and stay safe my friend.
The only thing listed on the Victorinox website is it’s called a pulling tool, my guess it’s part of the Awl and is probably used to pull the thread when sowing leather. I also think it can be used for lacing any sort of items where the cord could hurt your hands I would also think for lifting a large pot off of a fire and things along those lines. These are my best guesses I hope that helps.
I have to agree the spirit x pliers will not open up wide enough to work on faucet rings etc. I wish more people would show how more superior the wave pliers are. The spirit is good for camping but not plumbing or whatever plier function you need.
The pliers open as wide as its safe for the tool to handle. Most people use a plier for tasks that are beyond its capability and size. That’s why leatherman pliers brake. Its not because they are faulty or they have bad metal. They actually have good quality materials. Its 95% user’s fault. Victorinox eliminated this issue by using a stopper on pliers opening range. So according to the pliers size it opens for size of bolts and objects it can handle without issue. Another thing I like on Victorinox is that they have different density metal on each tool.some tools are more flexible or hard in order to take more pressure without braking. Leatherman uses the same metal on the tools and he changes the metal on some models. But is still on the top 2 companies that make multi tools.
Could you take your own shower head around and simply swap them out ? Read that the heads build up bad stuff which through the showerhead becomes atomised in usage and enters lungs. Solution is soaking them in chems or vinegar occasionally. Surely most showerheads use standard threads. Sorry if have misunderstood the hotel plumbing dilemna. Do you take a wedge for the hotel room doors ?
Stone Mason Sorry I think I meant to say restrictor. In the base of the shower head is a water restrictor that restricts the water flow to a certain gallons per minute. I think when they install them they jam Teflon tape into the restrictor lowering them even more and barely any water comes out, so I’ve used my multitool to unscrew the shower head and the Swisstool wasn’t big enough to undo it. To me it’s inconvenient, but my wife with her long hair it takes forever to properly wash her hair, so problem solved. Take care and be safe buddy.
This is exactly what i'm need to see. I'm from mideurope (slowakia) and it is exactly as you say. I will buy leatherman but for the price (leatherman in europe) and warranty its better for me to buy victorinox. Thank's
I am originally from Russia living in Europe and I must say there is something irresistibly attractive about Leatherman's design... it's the whole function over shape thing that Americans manage to implement in their products. I own a Leatherman Wingman and a top of the range Swiss Army Knife and you know what - the Swiss knife has never been used as it looks too perfect, I'm always afraid to get it dirty, the blade is to perfect for me to re-sharpen easily so I end up not using it at all while the Leatherman has been so useful that I don't even carry any tools in my car any more! If I had to choose a multi-tool I would go with the Wave! Thanks for the review!
I know I have a few knives I hate to use cause they’re too nice I get caught in that safe queen mentality as well. Thanks for checking my channel out and stay safe buddy.
Leatherman offers better steels like s30v and 154cm, a lot superior to victorinox steel And a lot better design. But leatherman don't reach victorinox in quality construction, quality control and tolerance machining. It's a shame because a leatherman with victorinox quality construction would be the best multitool ever. I have 7 leatherman and 3 victorinox spirit
it's a chisel tool not a screwdriver. In Europe, such an aggressive and one-handed opening knife can be frowned upon by the police and they can take it away and fine you, better Victorinox
Wave was a good mt, but the construction was disappointing - I didn't care for the stamped handles. I think the Swiss is more finely manufactured. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a Swiss spirit, but still checking out the new leatherman free. I see I'm not the only to modify shower heads. Lol.
I think the Swiss Spirit is a good choice, but I also think you can’t go wrong with either of them. Yes the Victorinox is a little more refined, but the Leatherman is a little more capable in my opinion. Take care and stay safe.
@@shawnlavigne9069 you definitely can’t go wrong with a Spirit my friend and you can’t go wrong with removing some of the water restrictor because they go overboard at hotels you need to run around in a circle just to get wet...lol.
Leatherman makes better knives, better pliers, better screwdrivers. Those are the main tools I use. Victorinox looks pretty and that’s about it. The tools are a pain in the ass to dig out.
I don't know.. I had the leatherman charge tti with the extra bits (until it got stolen) and the tools on the leatherman were pretty hard to get out. I didn't like the scissors. And the screwdriver bits - one thing that was not mentioned is that they are not full-size bits, they are pretty flat which I could feel from time to time especially on the larger Phillips screw. Don't get me wrong, I still loved that multitool. But this time I'm considering going with the Victorinox Spirit XC plus ratchet. That Victorinox ratchet looks like a game-changer to me (reach, use of multitool and ratchet at the same time, full-size bits, the actual ratchet, etc..). Regarding the blade - to be honest I don't care so much about that. It's a multitool blade, which I probably wouldn't miss if it wouldn't be there at all. It's not just about the shape, dimensions, and material, it's also about the handle and handling - and there every (plier-based) multitool will suck. So I'll continue to rely on my Spydercos on that front.
In Mexico the leatherman guarantee sucks. It is also easier to explain the carrying of the vic as a tool than a leatherman since the vic does not have a knife and much less opening to one hand, i prefer Vic
Yes I’m glad with so much different laws and tastes we have the option to choose....Just curious why the warranty isn’t good for the Leatherman in Mexico? Take care and stay safe.
i have been using both and find the swisstools to be too fancy. Its weird because they are really well build an precise but the wave is just more tool, im not worried to scratch it, be rough with it. greetings from germany
Yes I get the same feeling sometimes the Vic is so damn shiny it’s a shame to get it dirty..lol. By the way I just picked up an older Solingen Anchor slip joint today. I wish I could find more info can you point me in the right direction. I will be mentioning it in an upcoming video if you want to have a look. Thanks.
@@TheBigCanucker sorry for answering so late:) i guess you mean a otter knive? those are quite oldschool. I solved the shiny swisstool problem btw, bought a xbs, very nice black finish, looks used very fast, love this thing even more than my wave:P
McDonald's is the best seller food restaurant too. I don't agree. Not so good quality, design and ergonomy. I have three Leatherman and the three have problems...very disappointing this brand. They must work harder in their quality. Leatherman is good. But the victorinox is a next level. You notice this at once.
Because it's cheaper than other multitool. Ford f150 is the #1 selling automotive because thier cheaper than other brands. McDonalds is #1 resteraunt because its cheaper etc. Etc.
Victorinox have a better quality construction control, finish and tolerance, but not better metal. Victorinox steel is the best rust resistance steel on the market, but some soft. Leatherman 420hc is a little hard than victorinox steel. And, more important, leatherman offer top range steels for the blade, as 154cm and s30v. A lot superior to victorinox. The shame is that leatherman dónt reach the quality control and construction of victorinox.
Objectively, the Leatherman has the edge in certain areas, and he points that out in video. The versatility to exchange different bits for screwdriver is a huge deal. With an extension tool, you can fit hundreds of different bits on the Leatherman. 😨
Recommendation: Leatherman Wave? Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how wrong it may be. All those extra bits & pieces are pure silliness for tools like these. They have no value unless you carry them everywhere with you and who is going lug all that stuff around all day every day? You might as well carry a small tool box and have regular sized tools. But, I hope you enjoy your Wave and like your pockets packed with all those miniature bits & pieces.
Richard Edgecomb well so far they haven’t saved my life and god willing they never have to lol. I never really carry the extra bits in my pocket it’s in my bag. When I have the wave on my hip I mostly use just the wave, but I did grab an aftermarket case that will hold them all. It’s a little heavy and I’ve only used it a couple of time on trips. I really appreciate your opinion and the comment when I get different opinions then mine it allows me think outside my box. Take care and stay safe buddy.
Yes that wire chisel stripper in one of the best most versatile tools on any multi tool of any brand. I’ve used that tool a whole bunch of times. As for the knives it’s a real toss up buddy. Take care and stay safe Wlad
Steve Sager Yes I would have to say the wave is my favourite to, but don’t discount these Victorinox Multitools they’re fit finish and build quality is excellent. Thanks for the comment and take care and stay safe buddy.
@@panoskarallis6797 Thank goodness, that's the most important piece, personally. It's crazy that a company known for their knives would not include one on their multi-tool.
True but even if it was like that the majority carries a folding knife or fixed blade. For me a multitool is not comfortable for knife tasks. I would gladly use a serrated blade of a multi tool for the dirtywork to keep my main blades edge intact and mostly clean. I work in the construction industry and i would rather have a separate blade to cut a rubber tube for instance from a fish that it will end on my plate.
It's a shame that leatherman don't reach the quality construction and machining of victorinox (tolerance, details, quality control etc), especially in non top price tools. It's a shame because leatherman design is better than victorinox design. Also leatherman warranty and innovation is better than victorinox. But American manufacturing and craftsmanship don't reach swiss/European quality. Every leatherman I have (7)have some waggle, some difference from side to other side etch... My 3 victorinox spirit models and many Swiss army knives are simply perfect equally one with other. Zero play, zero waggle, zero tolerance...
Hi, thank you. Yes, I don't say that leatherman have bad quality. I love leatherman, design and research, the quality of pliers etc.. The fact that they are the only multitool producer that offers premium steel blade. But I would like they put a little more finish in their tools. Probably victorinox not spend so much money in design (they have the same 2 multitool for almost 30 years, with some little variation), but have a incredible control of details.
I've always been a leatherman guy. I recently lost my edc Wave at the gun range the other day. Must have dropped it in the snow. So pissed. I really want to like the SWISS but it just looks sooooooo annoying to dig each tool out like that. I don't know why but it just doesn't draw me in like leathermans. I still might give one a try just to see what they hype is about. But looking at it and watching people use it, I don't like it lol.
I would go with your gut on this one. If your used to getting the main tools out one handed the Swisstool is a wee bit of a backward move and I think would be a little bit of a nag. It didnt bother me as much because I used the plyers and scissors the most of all the tools. Take care and stay safe.
@@TheBigCanucker Lol thats exactly what I did, and ordered one last night. I would like to at least try out a Vic at some point, but this is going to be my main edc tool so I needed something that I know will work for me. I ended up getting the Leatherman Surge limited ed. in silver and black. hyped to get this thing in. tnx for the reply
@@nyinfamous2k2 Being able to open the knife with one hand, especially for selfdefense purposes, is total deal-breaker for me. Same for the other blade, to cut a seatbelt in potential car crash, if one ever had to. These things should be thought through before laying down over $100 on one of these tools! As I said to others, being able to exchange the screwdriver bits on Leatherman is a huge deal for me as well. I love versatility and more options to pick from. Then the additional diamond file surface on Leatherman is something I'd strongly consider.
VICTORINOX has the the best steel in the world !!! No other brand, there is no multitool can be last forever without rust except Victorinox! Unique quality, made in Switzerland with steel from Germany and France. Other multitools are made in China with steel from cheap metals!
Apostolis Bournous Holy cow this debate Leatherman VS Victorinox sure brings out the passion for the brands. I sure love my Victorinox products as well as my ❤️ for the Leatherman they each have their strengths for sure. Thanks so much for the comment and please stay safe.
A buddy of mine lost his leatherman crunch in his yard cutting grass and found it in the spring with no rust. Canadian winter. Thats what made my mind up to buy my surge. Swiss army is top notch too, and id the first to make a multitool. But u cant beat the pliers/ vise grips. I say its more about preference and what job tasks you needs it for. Both are great.
Jason Rolling Yup I totally agree both are great. One day though I think I would like to try out a crunch. It seems pretty damn handy. Take care and stay safe buddy.
You can't be serious. Victorinox 440A-ish steel is adequate. Easy to sharpen, takes a fine edge and hardly ever rusts, but to call it the best steel in the world one has to ask: Best for what?
