Wonderful podcast, as usual! Thank you very much Carolyn for having Isabella Tabarovsky today! I have similar family/my life experience to what Isabella is talking about! Growing up in the Soviet Russia and, of course living through the "challenges" of untisemitism, i saw international mideastern looking students (men only). And then, years later I found out that they were terrorists in training!
For us (Soviet Jews), this is a double nightmare... like a time machine. For a long time, we thought all this propaganda was in the far past, and dead. Back in the USSR. Ha.
Thank you very much for this interview. I was born and raised in the USSR and I remember very vividly the massive avalanche of anti-Zionist / Anti-Israel propaganda that was pouring from the Soviet media, especially TV, until about1987 (+/- one year).
We left in 1990 because it was very scary, because that propaganda spread and started to give fruits, I remember my mom made me stay hope for the fear of pogroms!!

South Africa was never a 1st world nation as the majority didn't experience this as is the case with true 1st world nations. Brilliant conversation! I am probably same age as Izabella and I am having total dejavu lately hearing same thesis in today's leftist movement that I used to hear growing up in Soviet Union in 70-80s. All soviet educational institutions had that propaganda as part of curriculum and we were fed so much of it and the language, created by party apparatus and bureaucrats, was so rigid and repetitive and dogmatic that I can unmistakably recognize it in today's slogans. How with all efforts of propaganda we could not be deceived and we knew that it was a set of [extremely boring] lies that had nothing to do with reality but today's youth blindly falls for it? I wish they could listen to this podcast or in general, to people who had first-hand experience living in those totalitarian societies, societies that today's youth romanticizes and advocates for.
I haven't listened to the interview yet..But wanted to mention that it's not just the young people...Where I live anyway, many of the so called "progressives" have led the way are baby boomers, (grandparents) or now the parents spouting, going along and teaching this stuff...The Profs, parents, etc. It's soooo frustrating when I hear this stuff from the older ones...They should know better. We have had time to live through some history. Solzehnitsyn was a big deal when he came to the U.S. I remember him being very fawned over by the media. Too bad so many people just - I don't know - forget, or just go along with what's popular. Ugh.

My grandfather and great grandfather were repressed on false accusation of Zionism in Soviet Union. One in 1930s, the other one in 1940s My grandfather was not ideological, my great grandfather was an idealistic communist. The only reason why they were sent to Gulag was because they were Jewish.
In the 1990s I rented a video that was a new special from the 70s - from ABC news if I remember right - about Islamic terrorism. It said after the 67 war, the Soviets realized they needed a new weapon, since the West, i.e. Israel, had beaten their equipment. They realized that Islam hated Christians and Jews, and they decided to use it as a weapon. The video said the first PLO terrorists were trained in Moscow. Sounds like the anti-zionist propaganda campaign heated up then, too.

What can I say about this discussion as I cannot find the exact words as this discussion is absolutely brilliant and a great education for me. I used to get so angry when I heard the progressive left say these crazy things i.e. 'Israel is an aparthied state' 'anti- zionists are not anti-semitic' calling people who support Israel 'Nazis' ,. etc etc. I now understand where this dangerous idology all has come from and originated. In the middle of a very ugly antisemitic ("anti-Zionist") campaign orchestrated by yes, the Soviets, a Jewish student asked timidly a classmate: "Are you Jewish?" The classmate blushed, responded curtly: '"But I am not a Zionist" and started to avoid the "questioner" A known Jewish wit quipped at that time: "I didn't know that to be considered a Polish patriot one has to love Egypt (Soviet ally)" referring to the fact that most Polish Jews (a small post-Holocaust group) weren't exactly upset about Israel's victory in 1967 and accusations of being the 5th column were at the heart of the campaign (officially pushed by the 1st Secretary Gomulka himself on TV). The girl that asked has kept the memory of March 5th (?) 1968 - coming home from school, turning on TV and hearing the notorious Gomulka 5th column speech - her entire life.

They were preceded by months of attacks on Jews and precipitated by student protests for which "the Zionists" were blamed and the expulsion started. . BTW, on March 8th, 1981 (yes, during Solidarity period), the Warsaw University had a commemoration of the "March 1968" with the participation of Solidarity leaders. By chance, "the girl that asked," a young academic at that time, was there, traumatized again. Her family soon emigrated.
