it's a common practice to register as the other party of your conviction so you can vote in the primaries and select the candidate that you think your candidate can easily beat in the final election i.e. a democrat will register as a republican so they can vote in the primary for the weaker republican candidate.

When I turned 18, my dad made sure that I signed up Selected Service ( Draft ) and that I register to vote. I asked what party are we and my dad said Republican, so that is the box I checked. This dude probably did the same thing
I said the same thing the other day right after I heard he was a registered republican. My son got his drivers license at 18 and he asked me for the answers to questions like hey mom am I or should I say yes to being a donor and what are we democrat or republican. Also as he was getting older he asked if we were catholic and all these things. At that age most these (16-18) year old kids depend on their parents to help them answer these questions. All four of my kids asked me these questions. So yeah I agree.
