ARGs aren't necessarily run by companies for ads. A lot of ARGs are personal or small team projects. There are a ton of them online, especially on RU-vid and Reddit (most don't get attention/aren't very good though)

This kind of creativity is what made TF2 wonderful. It wasn’t competitive, it was a playground where goofing around and playing the objective were always at odds with one another. The objective on many maps was just a distraction you dealt with periodically to extend the game length for more weird moments like this video describes. It was a wonderful moment in gaming exuberance
