The legend of Mary Ann Partington, often referred to as "Bloody Mary," is a notable part of Lincoln, Nebraska's local folklore. Mary Partington was a retired schoolteacher who lived in a farmhouse at 4400 Superior Street on the outskirts of Lincoln. For about 20 years, her home was a target for local teenagers who would sneak onto her property as a rite of passage, often vandalizing it and harassing her.
In 1966, Mary Partington shot and killed Earl Eldon Hill, a former mental patient from Iowa, as he tried to enter her home through a window. Hill was killed with a 12-gauge shotgun blast to the face. Prior to this incident, Partington had shot and injured other intruders, including a group of teens and, in another incident, a teenager with a shotgun【7†source】【8†source】.
Partington's vigilant defense of her home earned her the moniker "Bloody Mary." Her story has been fictionalized in various accounts, including the novel "Havelock" by Tom Frye, which details similar events and captures the eerie reputation that grew around her【9†source】【10†source】.
Mary Ann Partington's life and the events surrounding her home defense have become part of Lincoln's urban legends, cementing her legacy in the community's collective memory.
