The Dishonoring of an Important Chinese Festival by Communist China This is a true story. A friend of my mother brought a daily calendar with both Chinese and western calendar from Hong Kong and gave it to my mother as a gift. Yesterday, my mother tried to find what day the Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋節 (also called Moon Festival and Mooncake Festival) falls on the western calendar. When she turned to the page of August 15 in Chinese calendar which is the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival and corresponds to Sept 29 in western calendar, she was puzzled why the page was not printed in red ink as pages of Chinese holidays are supposed to and why the name 中秋節 was not mentioned on the page at all. She thought she probably could not find Mid-Autumn Festival on the calendar because of her poor eyesight, so she asked me to find it for her. Then I found something very ridiculous on the calendar. Even though Mid-Autumn Festive is not mentioned on the page for Aug 15 in Chinese calendar, the next page Aug 16 is printed in red ink as if it were a holiday even though it is a Saturday and the page bears the information "The Day After Mid-Autum Festival" in Chinese. In other words, the calendar does not allow people to know when Mid-Autum Festive is, but it only informs people about it after the holiday has passed. I was trying to figure out why such ridiculous change has been made on the calendar, then I remembered my teacher before the communists took over Hong Kong told the students that the Chinese people have the tradition of eating mooncake at Mid-Autumn Festival on Aug 15 of the Chinese calendar because they want to commemorate the successful overturn of the oppressive Yuan dynasty to establish the Ming dynasty. They coordinated their revolt by stuffing secret message in paper inside the mooncakes calling for a revoke against their oppressive rulers on Aug 15. I don't think the communist rulers in Hong Kong allow the people to know about that true story related to Mid-Autumn Festival and mooncakes. That's why they do not allow the Chinese calendar in Hong Kong to honor the existence of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
