Her father was shortsighted. A warrior daughter could pass her knowledge, experience and skills on to his grandchildren. Thus making the warrior lineage even stronger if they choose that path.🤔🤔🤔
Damon Patterson sadly most Africans were small minded like her dad which is why there were so many African kingdoms that were taken over. They never saw the bigger picture.
maybe he was selfish and wanted her just to himself, and if there were more people with great fighters they wouldn't all want to fight for his kingdom.
@@tabthecabbit3354 I miss traditional animation. DreamWorks made some of the best Western 2D animations. Too bad they're not going down that road again for the foreseeable future.
F*k yeah!!!! I've been waiting for another masterpiece from DreamWorks like POE. So far POE is in my opinion the best animated film to have ever been made. I'd totally be down to see them tackle this folklore. And have Hanz write the soundtrack too. Damn. Need this to happen. Haha
Creative Mind - why is it seen that having Disney's approval to screen an African tale is the highest honour to ones story. Look what Disney did to Mulan, Moana, Pocahontas. They were changed to suit Western audiences palette. Do you want that for an African tale/stories. Let your tales stay African by producing them in Africa for African audience and those who appreciate them as they are.
@@adinas6516 Most people arent going to get to hear about this story. Just like with the other stories the only reason we know about them and were lead to see the true story it was based off was because of Disney. Also, most of the stories were changed because of violence anyway.
...So why isn't she a Disney princess again? It'd be an interesting reversal to see a woman fight for her freedom to marry (nothing bad about heroines who fight for their right not to marry, but I think we're at the point where the subversion has become the cliche). And it'd be especially complex considering that she had to use her cunning and martial prowess to that end. Honestly, before Princess and the Frog came out... Nothing against that movie, it's great, but when I first heard we were getting an African Disney princess, I was hoping for a figure from folklore.
Hakajin most African stories are not written (tribal stories are oral so it’s hard to find a good solid story). Though I rather have an real African princess than the racist abortion that was princess and the frog. You have to understand though, even if Disney made a real African princess, the American blacks would slam it so hard for being made by whites since most animators are whites. Also, you do know lion king is African (because lions are only found in African) so nala is an African princess.
There would be accusations of cultural appropriation. That's why the only black princess in the Disney movies is an Afro-American cliché (not saying that it's better).
Honestly, I think Tyler Perry Studios needs to collaborate with black animators and compete with Disney to release these types untold stories, and he shouldn't limit them to African folk tales, but pick up other untold ethnic folk tales and make them kid friendly while keeping them true to their history. Then make the adult versions.
manager-nim I’m not sure what you’re talking about. As a young girl, teenager, and then young woman, I never felt I had to choose and was never taught this. Neither were many of my friends and family. And I certainly never taught that to my daughter.
realbrat40 Well that’s really sad. Maybe it’s different for WOC but too often we are the ones carrying the bulk of the load. My dad was in the home but growing up, I saw my mother do EVERYTHING. She had a career and took care of us. Same with my grandma and on and on. And I have taught my daughter everything from how to cook to mowing the grass to checking and changing the fuse box and air filter, changing a tire and sorting and doing laundry. I’ve never put a limit on what she can do and I don’t see that with friends and family who have girls. It hurts my heart to think that someone would raise a child with limits.
The root of the story goes against the feminist narrative. But they can make a story inspired from it by changing around a few things by integrating characters from African mythology like the Kishi who is a demonic two-faced attractive man whose second face is a hyena who the father doesn't allow her to marry until he finds a power to even trick the king. The Mami Wata (African "mermaids) warn her as well when she fetches water from a secret lagoon when she roams too far away when her dad isn't paying attention. They even sing a song about a humble elephant herder in her future. But she thinks they are only doing it to gain favor from her father the king. Which is a complete insult because they are known to be fiercely independent. They can also use the Aziza - the fairy creatures of Africa who protect the environment - to try to warn the strong willed princess about letting the wheat rot which comes back to hurt her because it attracts the Tokoloshe (African zombie gremlins) who feed on the spoiled wheat and kidnap her. Luckily, the fairies help her escape and that is when she meets her future husband after he fights both the gremlins and the Kishi, who finds her and makes a deal with the gremlins for her promising some of the riches of the land with his new found control of the king.
It's somehow ironic how Yennenga wanted to marry but her father wouldn't allow it, whereas in most stories it's the other way around, fathers forcing their dauthers to marry somebody they did not love.
Yes , our children need positive images, representation, narratives on their history to instil pride and self-esteem in a world that batters us with negative images of ourselves - which is designed to demoralise us. We must arm our youth with knowledge and truth of their ancestors that no one can take away!
Listen to the narration again. And as far as I know (I stand to be corrected) she is from the Dagomba tribe which is indigenous to present day Ghana. She eloped north away from the land of Dagomba and met her husband somewhere up north, they had a son and their lineage created Burkina Faso. PS: our mordern day borders were created by the European powers of the day. Same way there are Akans in both Ghana and Ivory Coast and Ewe in both Ghana and Togo. There is no argument here 🤦🏾♂️
Completely agree. This story is beautiful, full of black history, would offer something completely new to the table and would make a ton of money. But no, lets take and old story that was told a tousand times and that already has movies and lets give it to a black person because they don't have original stories. That's how Disney thinks and it's disgusting.. but most of the people don't see that, Little Mermaid will now do more harm than good to black comunitiy and would divide people even more
Fabienne Bernard well I think it’s for the best. They’ll do us like they did coco. Ignore the roots, not contribute or give recognition to its origin and claim it as an original idea
You are a good story teller. Lol I also love that you took the time to talk about something you rarely hear about. No one really talks about African princesses.
Rae Jade She wasn't just a princess and a great warrior and the founder of the nation of Burkina Faso. Her statue greats you as you enter the former capital city Ouagadougou.
Beautiful......I love the way you made her gorgeous, beautiful, and sexy. Also, very chocolate lol but still showed that she was a warrior. Also, that she was married and had kids .Not just another baby mama. Which nothing is wrong with that because I’m divorced and a baby mama. In saying that let’s show our daughters and sons that we came from people who married each other and they lasted forever.
+HomeTeam History AH! You hearted my comment. I'm so happy! Your words motivate me!! Once I get into media, I'll definitely spread all of my works based in Africa. Absolutely pumped up for it~☆ 😄❤
Yes, do it sister, our people need the likes of you, Hometeam history, from nothing, to impart to them the knowledge and truth of the achievements, glory and beauty of our African ancestors. Never let the haters get you down, be persistent - read the parable of the persistent widow in the bible - she got justice because of her persistence. Be persistent, have faith in God, do good and you will win, and you will win, AND YOU WILL WIN! God bless you :)
Well, legend has it that she went berserk after the loss of her only child. Before then, ibadan folks claim she was a very responsible noble with a large heart.....
This story is so glorious! The animation is adoring too. Princess Yennenga is a great role model of mine. You're a light of African knowledge that the hateful Europeans cannot brutalize. I thank you dearly for educating me on Africa's beauty, dimensions, characteristics, and history in depth with such passion. We all need this. I was struggling to find channels that were informative about Africa in all its diversity then I came upon you! Ever since, I have been extremely happy that you exist. Utter brilliance! ☺
Airnicco Probably not all Europeans and i think they were referencing from older times if that's the case then... this is awkward cause im a black European XD
Black people won't watch it! You only have to read the comments! They all want Disney, Netflix and all the big names giving validation and that's the biggest problem in African-American culture. Most African Americans want validation from the so called mainstream media. Whites, Asians and blacks from outside America create independent short movies, series etc and they do well, black Americans want Netflix, Disney , ABC , NBC , CBS...
@@biokomalabo9468 That's such a shame. But you may be right.we need to get our priorities in order. Our children deserve better! Instead we allow them to listen to that disgusting music that they listen to, We have to be careful of what we pour into our future!
Yannenga: "I want to start a family of my own." Dad: "nope you gotta be a pure moe virgin waifu forever" Yannenga: "AW HELL NO" Yannenga: (runs away and starts a family AND a queendom on her own)
Loved this one Hometeam. We unschool at home and I showed this to my daughter Kiki who is 19. She has epilepsy and she learns visually. The colorful cartoon was beautiful to.
I was just telling a friend, I don’t understand why they can’t do a Disney African princess story. Princess and the Frog felt like they were trying to appease people, and then they are remaking the little mermaid with a black actress. What I don’t get is, why they can’t give an ancestral African Disney Princess like they did with Moana. Same applies to a South American princess. This was a wonderful tale.
OMG my last name is ouédraogo and I from burkina faso 🇧🇫 but i also Ghanaian 🇬🇭 and togo 🇹🇬 this is so inspiring knowing that she the founder of mossi kingdom which is now burkina.
This is so pleasant! I've told this story (& others) to my children and friends. Yenenga is herstory/history from my youth and upbringing in Burkina Faso (I am part Burkinabe of the Ouedraogo lineage). I hope you continue with glorious storytelling (the work of griot), and (important) changes to pronunciations. You are truly gifted and forward leaning!
No problem, she is incredible and Queen Sarraounia Mangou of the Azna subgroup of the Hausa is the original Black Panther that marvel got their ideal but won’t admit it and also in Disney Gargloys had an episode called “Mark of the Panther that was inspired by her, but Anansi was the villain for some reason. The Panther Queen real story is amazing, she beat France at the Battle of Lougou in 1899, she would not let her people be conquered.

You know what I think animation is the way to go as far as telling our stories. It's easier to depict the vastness and the beauty of ancient Africa that way. It's also more cost-effective. Animation doesn't necessarily only have to be for children. Maybe that's the way to go vs trying to get the motion picture. Loved what you've done love the story ❤️
Amaka Olachi You definitely should do it. We need more people doing stuff like this. Home Team History is an inspiration. We have to make the difference if we want our stories told. Really wish you luck. By the way you should get a book called in praise of black women. It's quite expensive but worth it. A lot of African historical women who are not even mentioned by mainstream historian's. Look forward to seeing your work in the future.
🙏🏾PLEASE MAKE THIS CARTOON AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE! Every Black child needs to see this! Also, you and Afric Network should do a collab. Both your channels are great resources for the Black community!
I’ve wanted to go to Burkina Faso since college. My college has a water treatment program to aid with water purification in small villages. That gave me a big smile to hear this was their legend. Beautiful.
This is wildly appropriate. I just finished communicating with my dad; then came to YT, to find this on my homepage feed. I began to add it to a watch later list, but Spirit would not allow that. You have no idea how perfectly Divine this is. I appreciated you.💯💗🌟🌈🦋💖🕊
This is the story of the origin of my last name OUEDRAOGO, which means stallion in mooré the language of the Mossi people. Africa and not only Burkina Faso has so many stories to be shared with the rest of the world. You did a great job, thanks a lot!!!
Sooo glad you’re showing us an African princess. I don’t think how emotional and powerful it is to show to our little black girls this kind of stories. Thank u so much❤️
@HomeTeam I LOVE ❤LOVE❤✊🏾 LOVE this story, the animation, and your soothing crisp voice. I showed this to my 12 year old daughter and she was inspired. I swear your videos give me power!! Please make a cartoon story about King Menelek and Empress Taytu Betul and how she defeated the Italians at the Battle of Adwa Ethiopia 1896 gaining thier independence from the Italians. And the real Cinderella story Disney stole from Egypt, her name was NOT Cinderella but her name was Queen Mebkara Nete Kerty 2160 B.C.E. who was the daughter of King Pepe the II. Queen Menkara Nety Kerty independently ruled Egypt and there were many legends about her. One legend was that she was bathing in the river and her clothes were on the banks when a bird came and took her shoe and traveled across the land and dropped her shoe in a Kings lap. He searched all over to find the owner of the shoe until he found Queen Menkara Nete Kerty and they married.
There is truly something about your animations. It’s a gift. Thank you for this. Children and adults will surely appreciate and gravitate towards these videos more. I know it was time consuming but it was worth it. You’re on to something special bruh...
I really did love this story. The artwork is beautiful. It's a beautiful representation of a strong woman and of feminism. Feminism means that women should be allowed to do what they want without being controlled. Wanting a family, wanting love does not make you less of a feminist. You don't need those things to be fulfilled though either and I think this is a beautiful representation of a woman taking her power and her life in her hands and doing what she wants with both. Also I had never heard of this story before. Definitely checking out your other stories now :)
This is true African history?! This is AWESOME!!! Please make this into a big picture movie, with the action figure toys, books etc for our children to learn more and be encouraged ! EXCELLENT!!!! :-)
I love this! This was in my recommended videos so this is my first time on this channel and I'm not leaving! You did such a wonderful job! Thank you! ❤
Neg Ste. Lucie good. I don't care if WHITES make their stories. Im a huge lord rings but I'll be just as happy if more Black writers make good stories.
Tevarious Rothborne lemme stop you right there ,those so called "white" stories are not just "white" sure their skin color is but their not "white" let's take Disney for example they maybe white as we see them but their completely different people for example: 1.Aurora (French) 2.snow white (German) 3.repunzul (German? I don't remember it's been awhile) All Disney princess are different nationalities sure they may look the same but as people they are not you can't group a group of people as one race sometimes (unless it's one of those videos where your explaining or talking about race then you can mention where your from) because grouping them up is like being backwards racist in a way where there not all the same like how it is for black people not all of you are the same you never know who's African or African American, you never know who's Nigerian or Jamaican you never know who's Haitian from west African it's all different I do agree we need more colored princesses and stories and when I mean colored I mean excactly what it means all colored women Black,Asian,Hispanic, etc everyone who's not the color white we need more stories about them as this world is a beautiful place filled with beautiful people and all people need to be understood and respected and loved for who they are and their cultures so with that being said we do need more stories like this it was interesting to learn about another country that wasn't my own and to hear about a awesome bad but princess who's lit like yes lol cast me as her in the next movie but I'm not her skin color (I'm biracial) lol if everyone is cool with that then call a sista up lol
Noonbot Sister of Daybot fuck what you talking about, don't ever fucking address me with that bullshit. Disney was created by a racist by the name of Walt. So you need to know who and what you are talking about before you address me. Disney had very racist skits and cartoons long time ago.
Finally a Beautiful version on an African princess and return of the original matriachy of the melanated woman. The fight has been too long. The dawn had come. YOU uplift the melanated Goddess, you uplift humanity, including our sunstars, our males. Thank you so much❤
This is in my son's play list he like this cartoon🤗 thank you for your time an effort to educate the ones who want to know your lessons also be a part of my son's curriculum. Thank u again much appreciate it🥰 keep up the Great work
Please do more about Yaa asantewaa and the Ashanti kingdom the paved way for the independence of Ghana from the very start since the Portuguese arrived in Gold coast in 1471 .this is what shows that Africans cherished their women from the very start .
So Dope....studied this story in a Master Class at BAM with our Mossi teacher. You guys filled in the parts that our translation missed but the narrative totally corroborates what he taught us!
This was beautifully done. Thank you brother. I wish my kids could see your work in an animated series. I'd pay $$$. This is much better than most of the junk our kids watching out there. I will contribute on patreon.
This is amazing! Great animation and story telling. Awesome story and a very inspirational woman. This is indeed what we need instead of yet another live action version of things turned to film time and time again - inspirational stories. Thank you! Now I know who I want to be when I grow up. :) Please, make more of these videos.
wow awesome animation you're really stepped up your game great vid! would you do a vid on benin/the internal politics of pre colonial nigeria and/or the ottoman ethiopian wars not much info about either of those on here interesting stuff anyways keep up the good work this is top quality animation!
What's beautiful about this story is that it showcases a balanced perspective of life. Yes, women can be fierce warriors, ceos, bosses, etc and still desire marriage and family. We can have both. I love it!
Can you make more stories like this of African history? This is the best with visuals. Kind of reminds me of HBO Happily ever after, even children would love to learn and be entertained watching your videos.
That's one of the most beautifulest stories I have ever heard about in my life about our beautiful black Queens that were warriors just amazing I say🙏💝
