The name Richard Blackthorne is actually a nod to the book "Shogun" by James Clavell, which is a fictional retelling of the real life event when William Adams arrived in Japan and, after becoming a close friend of Tokugawa, became the first European to become a Samurai. In the book "Shogun" William's name was changed to John Blackthorne. So anyone with a knowledge of that book probably already guessed how this story would turn out.
I always saw my Lawbringer as a staunch, pious, and very tenacious fellow who never wavered or gave ground. The kind of man you would trust to stand against all odds and be a defending sentinel. And comparing him to a dragon? It just fit too well.
