so one piece is so good normally I don't want to watch the fillers even if their good.i want to continue the canon story...but in naruto bleach dragonball I want to watch the fillers even if their bad cause the main storylines disappoint me...is that normal for most people?....I love the animes over the mangas for those shows but for one piece..manga all day...oda gives a shit...unlike the other authors who are lazy imo
fillers can be misplaced and arcs of it can piss me off...I want new things...a great "filler" quote un quote as its not in the manga and its not important to the main current arc going on or main characters but is important to a characters narrative and to me the perfect filler is episode 389 of shippuden...it adds so much to a characters backstory that the manga skims over that it made me realize why I like said character even more adding something unique to their already established backstory to put it in better context ..although it was technically mostly written but the author as a tie in to a film that was coming out to give context to a character in the films focus hence its timing but whatever...I will always say that filler ep is better than kishis canon chapter about a samurai vs hanzo that is so pointless...I cant believe that's in the manga..he really put focus on it?..lol..
My favorite part of this arc was that we were introduced to the shortest lived member of the Straw Hat crew, who lives on in our hearts thanks to his heroic sacrifice, staying behind in order to give the others the time to escape. The man, the myth, the legend: Con D. Oriano.
If this ever got "canonized" by Oda (a not unheard of thing in.. fiction), I'd love to see this lie become the truth as well, with Condoriano snapping and convincing himself he really is a crew member, up to and including later showing up to, this time, INTENTIONALLY help them to escape from... say... Egghead Island.
@@Dark_Jaguar In order to make this Canon Oda only needs to have a slight hint at Commander Jonathan. Either by a small one picture where he reads the newspaper about the crew, or him being a person called by the Marines etc. The only thing missing then would be the Manga owning up to it in some way that this happened. It's honestly a lot of potential wasted somewhat otherwise.
@@iammaximumstupiedwell in the anime he actually was canon and appeared in marineford (I’m not joking seriously 😦) but sadly in the manga he has never been seen…
@@mr.regular589he speaks the truth. He only shows up with the other captains, but he's definitely there. Even if it is just anime only, I'd like to see another filler arc with him
I do like that Vice Admiral Jonathan becomes associated with Akainu and is even seen later on during the gathering of Marines for the war of the best and even in Film:Z
the ending to this arc also felt really enjoyable. Sure, Luffy says 'see ya, old fortress guy' while cracking a huge smile and waving at the commander, but it felt satisfying instead of the usual 'hah, got ya there you dumbass'. It's like Luffy really enjoyed and respected the commander after everything he did to stop the strawhats from escaping, it also made me smile and left me wishing the return of the commander.
when i first heard this arc was filler and that foxy was canon i was shocked g8 is the best filler arc ever.....it feel more one piece than some of the cannon arcs of one piece
@@BGomez-tk7lu Davy Back Fight on manga: Awesome Anime version: absolute garbage. I don't even know how they could fuck it up so bad to make it look like a filler
How about the marines actually being competent combatants, doing shit like grabbing Luffy's arms when he missed an attack, who else has done that in the story?
My favorite One Piece filler episodes always ended up being those one off episodes. Stuff like the filler episodes when the crew gets to Logue town. Luffy visiting Gold Rogers old drinking hole, Usopp having a duel, Sanji participating in a cook off. I love the episodes just post Enies Lobby for similar reasons. Zoro getting adopted by an overly attached foster mom, Sanji getting salt, Usopp trying to think of a way to rejoin the crew without demeaning himself. I think the reason I love these sorts of filler episodes is because they don't hold on desperately to that need to be another story driven arc with a big bad villain. I'd love it if One Piece had more episodes with a relaxed tone like that. The action packed plot of One Piece is usually good and all, but its sometimes a little exhausting when you go from long ass story arc to ANOTHER long ass story arc.
Yass Rambles, those one-off episodes do have an unspoken strength to them; in world-building, having some breathing room in between arcs, and seeing how the straw hat crew deals with individual challenges relating to their abilities and aspirations. I don't often get to mention, but I actually like and appreciate certain characters getting special focus for their own personal plot event! It really helps show who they are and how they problem solve things, often without the main characters' help.
@@DemonPikachu Exactly my point! Thats probably why aside from this rare arc, most of the filler that try to emulate that action packed story style of the main story just can't cut it for me. Aside from just the obvious dip in quality in all aspects, they just try to copy the flow of the main story, poorly. I can't think of any filler in the show that tries the longer story arc format and gets it right. Best case scenarios are small one or two episode short stories like the Marine Rookie Arc which had three episodes. That one kept the story nice and contained, without much of an overarching goal, aside from "WE NEED FOOD." Love that little filler arc.
Yeah, i really like when the crew take their time to explore the islands and also expand the OP World even more. There is some context on why One Piece is more focused on action and the consequences of said action in the latest arcs but i really miss feeling like i was in an actual adventure and not another generic battle shounen... I always felt like One Piece wasn't focused on battles at all, they were there to move the plot onwards but the focus was always the adventure, the exploration of a world and all the wacky cultures and creatures that Oda could think off, how the straw hats would end up changing said world and so on
lol technically some of those are canon for some reason oda was rushing loguetown in order for them to grand line in chapter 100, usopp buying his equipment that's canon shown in the chapter covers.
@@Dylankiwi1 Bet the Shounen Jump editors were really pushing for the crew to get to Grand Line by 100 for marketing reasons. Seems like the kind of thing editors would do. I really like it when One Piece uses its filler for worldbuilding rather than... I dunno. What was that one filler after Dressrosa with the dude that had the make-anyone-your-pet ability. I just... Why? Y'know? Nothing was gained from fighting this random filler boss. Much rather have episodes like the Loguetown stuff or the post Enies Lobby episodes.
When you look at the wider plot sturcture, Jonathan is the actual the protagonist of this arc and the Strawhats are the secondary main characters. The arc is about Jonathan trying to protect his beloved base, comrades and peaceful life from an inspector trying to shut them down by finding a convenient excuse to justify the existence of the base in the Strawhat's "invasion". Who by his own cunning succeeds by the end, not just demonstrating the full power of the base, his own ability and his team's, but making their failure entirely the fault of the inspector and simultaneously letting the Strawhats, who have served their purpose and who he may actually like, get away. I think it's always very satisfying in stories when they have sort of an accompanying arc to the main character's quest like this. OP itself has done this quite a few times, such as with Coby's and Helmeppo's chapter, or Usopp's kid followers, or Vivi, or Norland, or even Hiluluk and Kureha and so on. And it's great because you get to see how the main cast touches and changes the lives of others (sometimes unaware). It gives you the immense satisfaction of making you fall in love with side characters and see their arcs come to a satisfactory conclusion while simultaneously being promised more new adventures with new people. One more reason the G8 arc is very OnePiece-ish because it is true to this formula.
I want to add something about the Foxy arc: it WAS canon, but the anime added a LOT to it. The manga only had the old man from Long Ring Long Land, the barrel race, the Groggy Ring match, and Foxy vs Afro Luffy, and then it went straight to meeting Aokiji and heading to Water 7. It doesn't drag in the manga nearly as badly.
yeah that arc is a set up arc (we hear of other davy back fight in the series and it helps understand those circumstances because we've seen first hand what a davy back fight is, so Oda can drop hints and news without having to point them out heavily. It also serves to some character exploration which is always nice
Yup. Had the anime just straight adapted the manga, the Foxy arc would have been five or six episodes, eight with reasonable padding. Instead it was FIFTEEN episodes long. Of course it felt dragged out and like filler, it was three times longer than it should have been.
@@kiffu94 i disagree We can be a better fan base by providing really reasonable constructive criticism when needed like the top comment above against foxy arc. I don't see a fan base being blindly ok with everything produced as a good thing because this attitude often leads to be overprotective or biased towards the series. It's kinda like a person that can admit his own mistake and say sorry and try to improve is way better than someone who is always apologetic for himself and makes a lot of excuses and always blame others. A fan base that can reasonable understand when its favorite product is flawed has a more positive impact on the product and is also more welcoming for some new fans
This is an important distinction i see very few people acknowledge. In the Anime, the Foxy arc gets like 2 additional whole davy back fights iirc. At least half of that arc in the anime *is* filler, even if the concept and 3 of the challenges aren't.
that and the fact that this arc creates some of the best "these marines are just people too" moments long before punk hazard did it (the marine cooks come to mind as they're all just trying to do their best and even after the marines find out that sanji is a pirate they still use his recipe because they want to use everything and still make the best food for the marines)
This video speaks to my soul...G-8 is my favourite filler ever...i honestly would even call it the epitome of the one piece anime from a writing and direction standpoint (let alone the fantastic animation design and the introduction of the legendary Con D Oriano)
It does sadden me that this is technically not cannon as it's just so fuckin good especially the cook off It just feels right Like it was always meant to be there
Ikr and when the Marines are without Sanji and realize he's a pirate they want to reject his cooking, till miss head cook realizes that despite his background, his philosophy on food is good, and so is his cooking. They decide to use his recipe but plan on making their own changes so they can call it their own. Kind of like the whole G-8 arc, they use the same characters/ingredients but they make their own arc/food without ruining the original.
Jonathan always struck me as the kind of guy you'd want to get a drink with when you were both off duty. You can tell he works hard and is good at his job but he doesn't let it dominate his entire personality. You know. Like an ACTUAL HUMAN BEING. XD
Really? Nothing about Chopper and Nami's arc in this? Part of the brilliance of G-8 is that the situations all play into the straw-hat's strengths as characters. Sanji and Chopper both have their ideals tested, as both essentially blow their cover to do what they feel is proper. Chopper basically volunteers himself and Nami to help the overworked doctor with her patients and win her trust; she is instrumental in helping them escape.
This isn't an in-depth analysis of the whole arc, it's a seven minute video praising a filler-done-right for its filler elements, or more specifically the likeable antagonist. He did mentioned how well the crew's interactions worked and included one example of it, which I think is enough for a short video like this.
@@MuffinsCrib i agree with him, the old fillers are better at showing the strength of the characters than the current arcs, the story is still amazing, but i miss for example sanji's arrogance and intelligence, and franky disappeared, he doesn't even "drink" coke anymore, Nami is way too selfless, unlike lets say alabasta, ussop is more reliant in dumb luck than making the best use the opportunities that arise, i miss they old days a little, it seems that they stooped showing it because we already know
I loved this arc also because it gave us an insight into a Marine base and the lives of Marines. I'd love to see this being explored more in the manga. We get cover stories or those small scenes with Garp and Sengoku but I want to see more
The problem with a lot of filler episodes, is that they stick heavily to the stereotypes of the characters. How many early filler and movies in OP did Sanji had to explain that he's a love cook, that he protects women. Then enemies mock him for his ideas and taunt him with being powerless due to his ideas.
I wouldn't say the textbook definition of a genius. In a fight, Luffy is highly intelligent. but outside of fighting...well...he isn't a complete idiot but...
This is trully one of the arcs I had the most fun watching, I love the Condoriano moment. And as you said they use a lot of stuff from the previous arc all the time, making it so organic to the story, wish it was cannon
One thing why I love this arc is that you see the Marines in a positive light. Yea they’re essentially trying to catch the Straw Hats but you get to see them be competent at their job unlike you see them out at sea and just getting destroyed as the crews punching bags
you name is half of Lelouch and Light's from death note and Code Geass, your picture is Zereff from Fairy Tail and your commenting on a One Piece video...…. I just find that funny for some reason. For the people who might be offended for some reason:(I know people can lie more than one anime but this isn't a hate comment)
I 100% thought this arc was cannon too. The Strawhats landing from Skytopia right in the middle of a marine base just felt like the exact type of trouble they'd get themselves into. And they fighting against a bunch of normies with huge guns instead of tough dudes was a nice change of pace, too.
I think I'm the only one who kinda likes the Foxy arc. Not because I think it's good, but it's just the scene when Sanji and Zoro have to work together and decide who's the ballman. That shit was fucking hilarious. G8 was amazing, when I first saw it I thought it was filler, but by the Emperor was it good filler, it was just so different than the rest of One Piece.
And the cool shipwright who taught Ussop about something later Franky would tell him. So much foreshadowing is going on there and it is amazing. Also loved the details in there. Absolutely good filler.
given the tone and pace of the live action, I feel like this would actually make a really solid episode to give the characters more time to breathe and show us more. Like I think it would be awesome to show how Sanji uses the leftovers to make a brilliant meal whichi highlights his talents as a chef while also reminding how he might view 'waste' given how he once starved on an island with zev.
Future Fleet Admiral: Con D Oriano Future Emperor: Go D Ussop Future Pirate King: Buggy D Clown D takes over the world from now on, just watch and see for yourselves.
Probably my favorite filler Arc just after this one is the Arc where everyone but Robin loses their memory of eachother and everything back to just before they first met and she has to hold everyone together while not fully understanding their histories. It really shows how much the characters have changed since meeting Luffy. It also setsup the idea that we really dont know Robin as much as we do everyone else which leads into Water 7 and her Arc/History.
One of my favorite things about this arcs was that we saw a different side to the marines. They are technically the force of hero’s in this story but are corrupt at the top. I also loved seeing them be a competent antagonist without them having a devil fruit user to just come in and attempt to 1v1 Luffy. This arc also has some of the most funny scenes ever. Luffy’s face, Condoriano and the Octopus scene and more. In my opinion this arc was more entertaining then arcs like Alabasta and Skypia.
Like i said in the previous upload. The reason this Arc is so good is because ti was written by Oda himself. The whole G Marines Bases were introduced into the series. Oda was planning to make this an actual Arc in the manga, but felt he was dragging the eventual Enies Lobby Arc. As such he gave the entire script to Toei, and used that Arc to get ahead in a few chapters. There's a reason this Arc is one of the best non-canon arcs ever. Because it technically is canon

Y.E.S. When I read the thumbnail I knew immediately which filler you meant. I loved this arc so so so much. It was just pure One Piece fun. And it worked as an excellent transition!
When a filler character becomes a meme for years to come. You can say you did a great fucking job. Condoriano you will be remembered as the best crewmate the strawhats ever had.
Man I love this video, and I love your channel so much. Amazing, and I also really really loved the G-8 arc. The characters were just so so spot on and every single one of them really shined, paired so well with keeping you totally invested literally the entire time
If I'm not mistaken only half of the Foxy arc in the anime was cannon, wasn't it? Like the anime inserted 3 extra games and Luffy's fight with foxy was supposed to be the end of the first (and only) Davy back fight.
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="103">1:43</a> When you realize Brook as new character's foreshadow (without taking into account every pirate flag of course)
I also think this was the best possible time in the story for a plot like this of infiltrating a marine base, because the status of the crew in this moment is perfect for it. After Alabasta, Luffy, Zoro, and Robin have official bounties and bounty posters, although Robin’s only has a photo of her as a child. Sanji, Usopp, Nami, and Chopper, however, do not have bounties and are still anonymous, though Chopper is still extremely conspicuous. That means roughly half of the crew can blend in with the marines almost seamlessly, however Luffy, Zoro, and Chopper, the three most likely to cause a scene, have to be sneaky. After Enies Lobby, all of them (except Usopp and maybe Sanji, but he always pulls off some genius subterfuge regardless) have their faces out there on wanted posters.
This was an actually fun arc with a lot of moments that made me realize the proper dynamics for Marines and pirates. Usually, they are antagonistic because they’re on opposite sides, but you see a good marine with a good base fighting against pirates in a game of strategy to the point where you kind of love every side and that’s rare to see.
Dude, I searched for this video for so long, I thought I imagined watching this video, I did not tink they took it down because it is in fair use. This just made my day, liked and subscribed. What a good video this is.
I really agree. Vice Admiral Jonathan obviously holding back the whole time. He even knew Robin in disguise. And I found it funny he also said Condoriano on Sheperd that was absolutely funny.
In this arc (episode 200 to be exact) is one of the funniest One Piece moments (for me). Sanji is trying to help Usopp bust open the bars on his jail cell so he can escape (in front of onlooking marines who are amused, thinking he has no chance of breaking him out). Usopp tells Sanji to reach into his pocket and use one of his impact dials. Sanji tells the marines that he's going to "show them something", puts the dial up against the bars, presses it... and... instead of causing an explosion it just says "This fine-tempered snake?" (in the english dub, "Who, this well mannered snake?) to the utter confusion of all the marines. It was a line that Usopp said about Nola (one of my all-time favorite characters) in Sky Island in an earlier episode and apparently accidentally recorded on a tone dial (which they both mistook for an impact dial). The scene just completely caught me off guard and I can still remember how hard I was laughing (all these years later).
The Long ring long land arc (or "foxy arc" as you call it) is terribly done in the anime. In the manga it's half as long and is a nice fun detour between the long sagas which are skypiea and water 7. In the anime they put in a whole second davy back fight, so half of the rounds in the anime are anime original and it just drags on. Will never debate the greatness that is the Con D. Oriano arc though.
Oda did long ring long land terribly on purpose. That island is actually laugh tale and it only opens up once a year during aqua laguna when the island turns into the shape of a crown, and the one piece is in the middle of the ground deep in the earths core.
My 2 favorite scenes were a tie between Usopp and Zoro pretending the inspector that Robin was impersonating was one of them, and the part where Usopp kept making Sanji grab the wrong dials.
I am so happy more people share my opinion on G8! I re-watch the movies occasionally, but I re-watch the G8 arc the most often, because it's so good, really funny while still being true to the characters, and is just the right amount of length. I am just reading the manga because the anime is really long winded some times and best for binging one arc at a time, but I love doing both, especially when coming over new filler banter and episodes
@@phantom_gaming3582 Before Marineford In The Anime There Is A Montage Of Many Marines Arriving At Marine HQ. The Commander And The Demoted Condoriano Were Among Them.
Foxy arc was still an efficient way to show how each crew member has already evolved in maturity/mentality. But I really like how G8 make use of tools we barely ever see later.
@@bluescluessuperagent yeah which made it worse. we did not need 6 rounds of that crap. even the foxy return one. even though that one was actually better cause it wasnt a bullsh*t davy back fight. davy back fights should never have been codified. love oda. that was a flop. it was kind of funny but still
@@superchiefdunga5394 More than "funny", I'd say is the mundane feel to it what makes it for me. Like, they get to an island, get provisions, rest... Simple shit. If I were to choose a favourite stand alone filler episode, I'd choose the one in which Chopper has to spend time with Robin while getting water.
@@Minette203 It's the chapter 131. Also, looking for it I found again that one chapter where the crew goes on board of a marine ship and Sanji helps out one of the young chefs with the cooking (133). Actually, the whole Post-Alabasta arc (131-135) is really nice as a whole, and are some of the chapters I cherish the most from One Piece.
If you've watched the film Deadend Adventure, this filler was relevant to reintroduce these Marine characters. Pretty sure Oda has filler for later connections as always, and this is investment for reiterating references for later on. Also, as someone already mentioned, this arc provides more better impressions for other Mugiwara crews' character developments.
idk really, i always skip the dragon filler from pre Red Line, the pineapple rainbow mist island, the Robin rescue flashbacks and that arc with the kung fu dugong and the tamer devil fruit user or something, i only really watch G8 at this point and sometimes the long ring long land arc, skipping the foxy return. I used to read One Piece and watch the anime as a companion piece but Dressrosa sucked almost all of my interest in the anime...
<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="118">1:58</a> i will give context to this, so basically the straw hat crew (luffys crew) floated out of the sky on a giant inflatable squid and once the squid deflated luffy wanted to use it later since it was basically a ballon that could carry a ship and so he put it in his pants, then a couple episodes later the straw hats had to escape the marine base and since luffy kept the inflatable squid in his pants they were gonna inflate the squid to escape. this scene shows luffy searching in his pants to find the inflatable squid he stuffed in there so the straw hats can escape the marine base
When I was a child this was my favourite arc. When I came back like 10 years later most of my memories came from this episodes, never thought this was filler
Military people have families. It's not uncommon to have parts of your base dedicated to families. There's an elementary school on the base I used to be stationed to. Which means kids, which means pediatricians.
It is explained, g-8 isn't very popular, so at the time to send a doctor they didn't even flinch about sending anyone who had the word doctor in them, and they were also short on medical staff, so in their minds any doctor is better than no doctor
@@Bes7iA they also guard stranded ships, so what if they rescue children in a shipwreck, they wouldn't need to take then to the continent for treatment
Totally agree with you. Dropping the Straw hats straight in a marine base was genius and I love this arc. I like the Foxy arc too just because of the Zoro and Sanji team up.
Jonathan could've been Daddy Mastersson's brother, and been almost cannon. They look similar enough 🤷🏽♀️ I wish they would've cared enough about the One Piece anime to make *all* arcs as well made as this filler. I hope that they'll one day do a complete seasonal remaster/remake, with at least 2 chapters per episode and a clear focus on detail. I'd watch OP all over again for that TBH. OP has a top tier story, but the animation is so lack luster because they insist on it being weekly.
Ok, 3 years later it has been confirmed that they will do what I asked... Hope I live to see the day, unlike our fallen nakama who won't live to see the end of OP 🙏🏽
One more thing that G8 did is show off everyone's individual strengths. Nami was shown as the strategist she is, Sanji showcased his ideals and how he puts them into action via his cooking, Usopp became the embodiment of "fake it 'til you make it" and did so, well. Nico Robin had her skills as a covert operative shown in the capture and replacement of the arriving commander, Chopper had his own aspirations and skill put to the test, holding both his identity and several enemy lives in the balance, showing his dedication to being a doctor above being anything else. Luffy was put into a careful situation, walked up to just about everything against him, and kept going, showing his willing to press on despite everything. Zoro was surrounded by gunmen, thrown in prison, and almost blown up, and he still kept a level head, showing his level of confidence in his ability, and the level of focus he has on top.
Jonathan has left such an impression on me that I immediately remember his voice every time I see him, even though I last saw the filler years and years ago
I hate being that guy, but you forgot to mention something. And by that i mean the fact that this arc sets some ground for what is going to come. Let me explain myself. When Usopp tells what happend to the old man he something, that someting ended being the Klabautermann.
i wasnt expecting to land on this video but im glad that i did this was awesome man and really sums up the g8 arc perfectly thanks for this like for real lol
Not really. For me that ending did nothing but disservice to worldbuilding by comferming its alternate history earth. Like seriusly that twist destroyed for me orignal FMA because they showed some fantastic locations and towns that are really not possible in Europe in any time line (I am from Europe and there is no fraction of sandy deserts in area of middle Europe). That isekai ending was just plain old shit and THANK GOD FMAB fixed everything from that and made it objectively better then orignal in EVERY WAY.
im watching this arc rn and i legit cant stop laughing at everything its really funny and idk if its just me but the animation seems a lot better during g8 as well
I really like the Foxy arc tho when Luffy was kicking ass with an afro was badass. Seriously and the dub made me bust a nut" Alright pops let's rock.... oh yeah" man I love that fight it reminds me of one of my fovirote anime hajime no ippo. "Does the afro make the champion or the champion the afro a question even modern science can't answer" idk how people hated that arc man that fight was too great
