Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Director, Bioinspired Advanced Manufacturing (BAM) Laboratory
A. James Clark School of Engineering
University of Maryland, College Park

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course serves as a unique opportunity for students to leverage the CAD assembly interface (i.e., “Ultrahand”), machine elements (e.g., rockets, motorized wheels/propellers, stabilizers, springs), structural components (e.g., beams, plates, adhesives), and sophisticated component- and system-level physics of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” on the Nintendo Switch to advance their knowledge and experience in machine design. Students will execute two course projects that are each based on objective performance targets that will require students to apply machine design principles to balance trade-offs for the addition/placement of machine elements and structural components with energy (i.e., battery) depletion rates. A portion of the grading is based on live demonstrations of machine performance in silico (i.e., within the video game). Students will also gain experience with soft skills through course deliverables including oral presentations associated with each project/challenge.

It's amazing how video games have come to such a point from being entertainment to being a testing ground for all audiences, including universities Nintendo's first historic achievement ever before a well-designed game

FINALLY! Someone acknowledges that TOTK's Ultrahand interface isn't "clunky" rather it's actually REALLY intuitive!

I came here after seeing another video that mentioned your course on engineering based on the game. That is so fascinating. I have to admit, I'm not too good at designing complex zonai machines that work very efficiently. Often something goes a bit wrong with my designs. It requires trials and errors. And patience. I can of course create complex stuff that work by copying other people's showcase videos but then I'm not really learning.

Will they get an A++ if they add a Korok? Just wondering. (All jokes aside, This looks AMAZING! I hope that more schools use this as a stepping stone to use video games to help learn. Maybe Splatoon 3 for art-

It's true, software licenses cost a lot when you can learn the concept thru the game. It's fun and intuitive for the students at the same time. Goodjob professor 👏👏👏

Really awesome idea as a course mixing with video games, here are some ideas to make other uses of the game, you can make detachable construction to make things like rockets or flying ships, on the switch there's still the limit to how much parts you can have loaded near you in game at the same time, If you had the game modded you could bypass the limits of loaded parts, find fanmade special environment for special case like what if all hyrule was flooded and more, it could be interesting and I think having the game on emulator is legal if you all have the console and game (not sure), but you gotta have a really good computer then.
@Teknanam
@Teknanam 5 месяцев назад
Emulation is legal, but tou have to go through some hoops to legally acquire a ROM. And it still might not be enough to stop Nintendo from filing a frivolous lawsuit. And multiple gaming PCs is going to cost the college more than multiple Switches.

The "Introduction to CAD" course is a prerequisite. I don't talk about it that much in the video, but the students model a lot of the Zonai devices and their machines in SolidWorks (you can see a bit of that in their presentations).
