There's one thing that I regret that people who didn't play this on N64 will never get to experience: The feeling of having to actively turn your console off when the game left you perpetually on that "The End" screen. There was such a sense of sad but satisfying finality in the game making you do that - no returning to the main menu, no unlockables upon completion - the adventure was over, and that was that.
Lol when it happened to me, my brother and I just sat there for 30 minutes looking at each other thinking "is that it?! We just turn off the console now?" MY brother thought if we left it on long enough some secret "extra" would occur lol
The way Zelda screams when Link takes a hit always stuck with me. To get to this point, Link has survived literally hundreds of traps and monsters. Every dungeon is brimming with new ways to kill you. Taking damage is nothing to you at this point. But Zelda hasn't seen the shit you have. She never dodged guillotines in the shadow temple, or fought a man-eating dragon, or parried a stalfos' blade. When Link gets slashed by Ganon, Zelda screams. But you just get back up. Because that's what you've been doing since the start of the game. You may not feel like you have the triforce of courage, but to everyone else in Hyrule you're the bravest person that has ever lived.
@@IamCanadian3333 That's Nintendo's tradition. When you reach the end credits of its exclusive titles such as Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda and the screen freezes, that's the end of the game. And it doesn't rollover nor does it carryover unless you either reset the console or turn its power off. The Reset button isn't there for decoration.
The post has sadly been lost to the ages and the dozens of other videos of this fight, but I distinctly remember a RU-vid commenter once claiming they'd only ever played the original Zelda before this one, he had no idea Ganon was once human, and he'd figured Ganondorf was just supposed to be a referential throwback. He then said when he saw Ganon's name come up for the final showdown that the revelation blew his fucking mind. What I would give to experience Ocarina of Time in a whole new way like that again...
That’s pretty rad. OoT was my first Zelda game, but before I was anywhere close to the ending my parents bought me a Legend of Zelda VHS tape from Walmart that had the animated series. Being a 7 year old boy who just got into the Zelda hype, I would spend my time between playing the game and watching that tape over and over. Of course, connecting that Ganon and Ganondorf from only those 2 bits of media was impossible at that age, and I figured they just sounded similar. Next thing I know, I escaped the castle only to be greeted with not only my very first true final boss, but freaking Ganon of all things. That’s when it clicked that the Zelda universe was way bigger than I thought, and that my movie and the game were indeed “Linked” together into something much much larger. Not only that, but OoT Ganon was the coolest boss I had ever seen, and remains as my all time favorite variation of Ganon in the series nearly 20 years later. I’ve since played every Zelda game since then and grew with the series, but OoT will forever hold a special place in my heart because of how it brought me to the series
That's awesome. I know that feeling really well. I had a similar moment when I got to the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. Wasn't keeping up with news or trailers much at the time, so it wasn't until Snake (who I thought was Solid Snake the entire time) lost his eye and put on the eye patch that it clicked. With how similar BB looked and acted like Solid Snake, I never even questioned it till then. I was so mind blown I'll never forget the feeling. "Wait, Snake never lost an eye...." It finally clicked and I lost it.
22:30 I started my game file when I was 10. I pulled the master sword when I was 10. I finally finished the game today at 20. Seeing Link in this sequence is like watching 10 year old me walk away from that very sword I pulled as a literal kid. This is so deep for me and it hurts...
I feel the same expect i finished it at 10 but had no clue how to do the game until about 20 years old my brother was the one who i mostly watched play it and everything is memorized
The fact there are people in this world that won't understand that feeling, or haven't experienced something like that themselves makes me sad. I had a similar thing with Final Fantasy 8, playing it now let's me see myself how I was when I first played it (9yo) my mother had just passed away and I was all alone and had to take care of myself alot....so I identified with the protagonists quite strongly... playing now, and seeing how the character grows and becomes a better person, I can see how much I have also grown. I can imagine it's a similar thing for you. Games can be MUCH deeper than people give them credit for...
To say this game was “ahead of its time” is a *massive* understatement Edit 2023, and I still stand by this claim. OoT is a masterpiece, and it’s awesome Ganon’s coming back in TotK!!!
It wasn't even on par with contemporary games. We were already playing Quake on the internet two years before this game came out. Hilariously Nintendo still doesn't know how to make internet multiplayer games.
had to get creative with their limitations. They had to work around it. Cut out any fluff and sharpen the best they could. Now most games are 90% fluff
The ending is so wholesome, watching all the characters together and in peace, that always got me. And that final scene and screen with Link and Zelda. Such a masterpiece of a game, just this year is realized why people call it "The best game"
Too bad that it gets flooded. Since that comes after Ganon gets sealed away like planned to happened by 6 sages here with only 1 Triforce instead of full Triforce for Doomed Timeline, but the seal breaks on Toon Link (Adult) Timeline. Child Timeline comes in after The End happens here: warns Zelda about the 7 years of doom, Ganondorf gets arrested, then attempted execution goes wrong which sends him to Twilight til Twilight Princess happens. Hero of Time becomes forgotten in this timeline, his words, it’s a mess.
Im 32 and couldn't help it.. i cried. The game was the most perfect thing ever. Accurate to the depiction of myth, hero, and everything. loved it when I was a kid, loving it now.
@@wallacesousuke1433 Why are you going at a random game cutscene and scrolling through the comments to find this specific comment just to harass a game. You're weird
Ganondorf dose have a title for him it's just in this gameplay the cutscene where you first see ganondorf is already played out that's why no title for him
8:59 *GANON* No other description. We now fully understand what kind of man Ganondorf is: A Monster who ran through Hyrule and wreaked destruction at every corner both land and water. This the monster everyone fears, and now it's time to face him. We know what's at stake: Everything
I remember playing this for years as a kid in the 90s I used to just get lost in the world it felt like there was so much to do. Then when you finally complete it and see all your favourite characters partying at the end was the perfect closure ❤️ id never seen nothing like that on a game before. The best of all time
How not to love this game? It's almost like something deeper than just entertainment. It's an experience that touches you at your soul. You experience sensations with this game that you wouldn't with most games.
This always makes me tear up! This game holds a special place in my heart! I played it as if it was an open world game back then hahaha just going around the same places doing dumb stuff ohhh the good old days.
That’s how many secrets were found out about this game. Amazing how even to this day after all these years people are still discovering tricks, and Easter eggs on this beautiful masterpiece of a video game creation.
This will remain my favorite game until the day i die. As a kid, i used to wait eagerly for my dad to get home from the print shop he worked at so i could sit by his side and watch him play this game. The smell of ink on his clothes, all the music from the game, the memorable moments and that strong sense that you experienced something truly special, something unexplainable and epic and ancient. How can another game match that? So grateful for this game to have been made.
Being 30 today, I have yet to find a game that can recapture the feelings my younger self had playing Ocarina, and especially, Majora's Mask - My favorite game of all times. Elden Ring brought me _real close_ , close but no cigar :)
When you really think about it, those bells hint Majora's Mask. Notice how similar they sound to the Clock Tower in that game. Apparently, Nintendo already had the sequel in mind.
currently playing tears of the kingdom and looking back...ocarina of time still the best zelda game of all time. I was 16 and got this day one when it came out on n64...the memories...I miss the 90's!
I was born in 95 but I still have a few memories of the 90s....I remember playing ocarina in like 2003 as an 8 yr and it was the hardest game ever ...no RU-vid or videos to show you to progress....it was definitely incredible times growing up those years
I was quite upset abd emotional when I originally played this on N64 and the fairy left him I remember, as it was as though he was truly saying goodbye to his long time companion
This ending...the whole game...i will remember it to the rest of my life life! I played it at N64, as a child, and i still remember it...characters, music...its wonderful!
Okay, there are few things the original N64 version of OoT still has over the 3DS remake/remaster. 1: When Link met Ganondorf in the original, he brandished his sword after Ganondorf mocked him, not before. Kinda messed up the dialogue a bit. 2: When Nabooru was being captured by the witches in the original, the music stopped playing, making it really damn creepy. The 3DS version kept playing which took away the fear factor a fair bit. 3: THIS FINAL BATTLE!!! Now in the 3DS version, Ganondorf is not in shadow like this 8:42 and when he threw his arms back in the 3DS version, he seemed kinda calm about it. Here, it's just a DB explosive kind of movement and intimidating as hell. Plus, the whole battle is in shadow, Ganon is barely seen and is only completely seen when he's properly knocked down. It's amazing how much of a difference that sort of thing can make.
Still the greatest game of all time to me! Christmas 1998...I was 12 years old...will never forget that time: There was a tremendous hype around OoT already months before its release...we had no internet back then, so everyone was buying game magazines to get the latest info about it. Then it finally came out and surpassed all expectations. I can't remember any other videogame achieving that. I'm so glad, I was able to experience OoT when it was released. Every aspect of it was groundbreaking back then.
16:22 When i was a kid, this scene literally makes me cry!!! Zelda: When peace returns to Hyrule, It will be time for us to say good-bye... 16:45 (Zelda plays for the last time Zelda´s Lullaby with your Ocarina of Time) T_T
That final ambiguous shot of Link bestowed with the triforce of courage and Zelda meeting this stranger for the first time always gets me a little. Fortunately the portraits of Bowser and Luigi in the background lighten the mood a little.
This is a super small detail but i love it, when the tower collased and link and zelda heard that banging, i liked how Link quickly steps forward with his arm out to keep Zelda behind him. Idk why but that makes me happy🥰🥰🥰
I remember spending hours on catching the biggest heaviest fishes lol this game gives me so many fond memories of a kid back in 1999 when i first played it. I played it 4 times over coz it was so vast. Now im playing breath of the wild. Awesome games
I’ll never forget the first time I played this game at 7 years old. How I breezed through the first 3 dungeons only for the adult half of the game to become a real challenge. I ran in circles in forest temple trying to figure out what to do. Fire temple had me running all over the place because I was a dumb little kid who couldn’t recognize a fake door was a double bluff. Water temple roadblocked me for months cause I kept quitting in frustration. Shadow temple made me stop for a while cause it freaked me out. Honestly spirit temple I have the most emotional attachment too cause it seemed to be where I’d grown into the Zelda games mechanics. I had an easier time in that temple than all the previous ones cause I learned from everything I did wrong in the last 4 and actually started paying attention to various surroundings. Man it feels embarrassing I was this bad once.
This is the first in the series that I played, so when Gsnondorf became Ganon I thought "what the hell is that?!" After playing through the entire series and returning to Ocarina on occasion I now think "Holy s***, thats ganon!!!!"
I feel so sad and happy at the same time every time I see that part, with a feeling that despite going back in time and not remembering everything that the future holds, Link leaves with the tranquility and peace of knowing that everything will be fine.
@@tomasstummvoll68 cuando Link devuelve la espada al templo del tiempo, regresa hace 7 años, pero ya con Ganondorf sin la posesión de la Trifuerza del Poder.
As a kid, this was the first Legend of Zelda I played. Well, actually it was Zelda II on the Nintendo Entertainment System but I didn't know how to play it so Ocarina of Time was my first game and the one that I passed. I'm 36 years old these days I still have a soft spot for Ocarina of Time.
People of hyrule, you are dancing. If you knew that the land you are all living in would be flooded and the mountain tops turned into island because Ganondorf would come back. Dear link, in the castle courtyard, you're chatting with the princess. Expect your adventure in the world of Termina and after your return, you may be becoming a knight but you'll die, only to come as the Hero's shade to teach your skill to your descendant. Link, win this fight against that demonic boar or else, whether your descendant or reborn, will wear brown sleeves and the upper part of your tunic will have stitches.
Its been since 2005 the last time i played this on my n64 as a 10 yr....i dont have time like i used to but every time i see these credits it reminds me of the amazing memories it gave me completing this
The escaping the tower scene always made me anxious. To this very day, time limits on videos games still make me nervous after watching my big brother play this particular part when I was younger.
This game is mandatory to play I don't care if you think the graphics suck or hate the controls I swear this is the only video game ending next to mother 3 that can make me tear up and feel good about it.
My dad liked playing The Legend of Zelda games. He played almost every zelda game apart from Twilight princess and Majora's Mask the sequel to Ocarina of time
I just want to say thank u for take me down memory Lane playing this in my room with my brothers and the end was the best ✊✊✊💙👍 thank u again I needed that...
Its crazy that as a kid this boss fight felt so freaking hard, I died so many times lol. Now as an adult its like wow this boss fight is about as straightforward as they get lol. Still epic af though.
i love how in the very begining of the game when you first meet zelda she says "your name sounds familliar" , and then the game ends with the same scene(young link and zelda meeting) ,referencing that she does sort of remember
The greatest finish in any video game to this day. I have the 1.1 copy cartridge, so Ganondorf's blood was RED and have the "Islamic" symbol. Being 27, here, this game bring such fond memories as a kid. I miss it...!
I don't really have that much nostalgic attachment for Ocarina Of Time (my first Zelda game was Link To The Past, but I first played OOT around the time I was 10-12 in the late 2000s), but I can see why this game is so acclaimed even more than 20 years since its release. Sure, the game does have its flaws and shows its age in places, but so much came together to create the perfect storm of a game that will be remembered fondly for years to come, and everything was tied so neatly together by the ending. That image of Ganon silhouetted against the sky towering over Link is unforgettable. And the bittersweet feeling of having to say goodbye to Zelda and Navi, there couldn't have been a better ending to this adventure.
