I played this when I was 9 and it took me years to finish. I just replayed it on the Wii U and finished it in a week or so. Amazing game, my favorite game ever.
To me, Wind Waker is the best Zelda ever made. First of all, it has the best story of all Zelda games. I mean, after playing for long, and not seing many Zelda characters or names, you get underwater, and suddenly, you are in the all-forgotten sunken Hyrule. HYRULE, people! The main land in the Zelda games, the land we have played in in Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and more! And after so many years after Hyrule's doom, we get back down there, to the all-forgotten land, with the 6 Ocarina of Time sages and all that! How amazing isn't that?! And also, the ocean. I know many people hate the sailing, but I love it. Just sailing between the islands, exploring the wide sea, visiting the different islands, watching the beautiful sky changing, and now as the whole ocean loads at once in the HD remake, you can see the islands a lot more detailed from far away. Just seing new islands in the distance as I sail... man, it's incredible. I love this game. And I always will. When I heard they were remaking it in HD, I nearly fell off my chair! :D
One of the best games ever. Thank you Nintendo for making my childhood awesome. I need to play this again, still have it on my Gamecube. Such a beautiful game, I wish games still were like this. Now there are only bad first person shooter games on the market.
I completely agree, Nintendo always makes the most fun games that never get old. I've replayed Ocarina of Time lots of times and never get bored with it :)
you think that way because of sentimental value, must likely it was your first zelda, but for me a veteran since the first one came out, this one is not even close to the best of the series...A link to the past, ocarina of time, breath of the wild, twilight princess and majoras are amongst the best, then the rest....
How many of you were around when this game was first announced for the Gamecube? All the shit that was talked, you couldn't find one gamer that was happy with the way this game looked. Now, all of a sudden, it's everyone's favorite.
Wind Waker is the reason why I'm a Nintendo fan since then. The first time I saw this game I really, really enjoyed it. Since then it's my very favorite game.
I think it reflects the change in the game industry over time, how it's matured and how it hasn't. It seems as though people have grown tired of darker, grittier graphics over the seventh generation. Just look at how often people complain about brown shooters and a lack of good art direction even when the games themselves may be pretty good, while iffy games like Mirror's Edge and Journey get praise for their refreshing art direction. Simply put, at the time, people wanted games to become darker and more mature a medium, as gamers were growing up and the systems could finally deliver on that. But now that the market has been firmly consumed with it for so many years, graphics like Wind Wakers' are refreshing and new(even if they're actually rather old).
Yeah, I remember all the hate towards the art style. I didn't quite get it because, to me, it looked really cool. I truly thought the whole issue was ridiculous. It's just funny now when look at how far Windwaker has come. Moral of the story: Don't jump to conclusions.
I was too young to have gone onto forums and stuff online, and relied on friends to pick games for me, and I loved the art. I still do, and I guess I'm not much of a Zelda fan, cuz I didn't like ocarina (sue me). This game adds a sense of wonder I've never seen in any other Zelda.
nickwick35 That's the problem with any kind of review score really. Personally, I think they're all useless. I always liked the Screwattack approach of just giving out a: Buy It, Rent It, or Leave It. If this actually was about consumer-advice, and people commenting on review sites were honest with themselves - and wouldn't just see reviews as a confirmation of their "excellent judgement-making" and highly evolved tastes in videogames - then that would be enough! But of course, a mere "Buy It!" doesn't lend itself nearly as well to 'discussions' (torrents of hatred that generate website traffic) as a score like '9.8' does...
+Jeff Poole To be fair NO game is flawless and perfect, so your idea of a 10/10 seems a little pointless. I can't name one game without at least one little nitpick or issue especially considering a majority of it comes from opinion. 10/10 for me just means legendary and flawless to an extent, but still has it's problems like all games.
I STILL have this game, as well as the GameCube, and I STILL play the game. This game really never gets old, nor boring. I effing LOVE this game, and think this IS the best 3D Zelda ever. I'm kind of tempted to buy the Wii U just for Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. (Even though I have it for GC.) I Kinda want Nintendo to remake the Metroid Prime series really badly.
They have remade the prime series. In fact all three (excluding hunters) games are on the trilogy disc for the Wii. Although, if you're talking about a specific Wii U remake, I would definitely agree if they hadn't already done the Trilogy set. Obviously they were only able to make graphics updates to Prime 1 and 2 since 3 was already for the Wii, but I don't really think Corruption even needs an update, likely not for another several years.
Who else want's to see Super Mario Sunshine as a HD remake? I know their different franchises entirely but seeing this game really makes me wish that they'd remake Sunshine :D
If you are talking about Pokemon then yes it got a 7.8 because of too much water because the game doesn't revolve around water. In Windwaker you sail every where so a lot of water is necessary. That's the difference one game is a sailing game and the other isn't.
InfantBorrowed Its just a joke buddy. by the by, Hoenn region is all about water in Pokemon. hence the joke, because IGN really shouldnt be surprised at the water theme of the game since it came out years ago on the gameboy. Equally as funny if they said that complaint on this review actually.
Jaeger Bravely In fact one of the themes of the games is actually water. One of the legenadries is one hell of a giant whale, one of the evil teams is named Team Aqua and you live on an island.
Best Zelda game ever made. Amazing gameplay, beautiful visuals, amazing soundtrack, memorable characters and the overall atmosphere of the game is amazing. Masterpiece.
Yeah I heard bout that my brother got a wii u and it took a while to update cause of all the server issues. I'm sure it'll be fixed in no time though :). The game is gorgeous though and so much fun
***** very underrated :( well back in the nes, snes days this console wouldve sold like crazy but gamers have changed alot since then and now all they want are mindless, linear, easy FPS & TPS to play them 24/7 online.
***** no prob, i read it all^^ and i totally agree. especially on the emulator part. i have 1000+ NES, SNES, Master System & Mega Drive/Genesis, GBA games on PC. but when i saw Metroid Zero Missions, Metroid Fusion, Ninja Gaiden(NES) & The Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap i bought them without thinking. I will buy alot more Virtual Console games in the future^^ i think this console is perfect for gamers who started gaming in the mid 80s - early 90. the new Zelda looks great hopfully for me i get amazed by it cause since Wind Waker that didnt happened. TW & SS just didnt do it for me. well we maybe dont get Mega Man but Mighty No.9 this year (i will get it for PS4 though) what i want the most for the WiiU is a new Metroid game. (sorry for the horrible english, its not my native language)
From all the reactions i've been seeing, i think the wii u is going to have something of a comeback. this game getting so much love, then SSB and mario kart, i think it'll get a lot more popular than it is.
doing the same thing... i have the GC so the free upgrade is welcome. i hope nintendo keeps doing this freebies for their main games. like handing out Pokemon XY with the 3DS
Mine too, everything about it is great. Especially that soundtrack! A darn shame my copy of it on Gamecube doesn't work anymore... I was hooked, and then one day the disc was unreadable :[
Same! When I started playing it 10 years ago, I was like "WHAT THE HELL!! WHERE'S EPONA!?!? WHERE'S HYRULE FIELD!!" And then the moment you sail to the first dungeon, seeing the 2 peaks slowly approach you as storm clouds gather above you... I became totally hooked.
Let me tell you something right now. My gamecube version works but it is always making a static sound which really hurts the amazing wind waker soundtrack. It sucks. If I get this version I will probably explode with happiness into streamers only to reform and play the game grabbing every sidequest, treasure, and secret to be found. Also, lucky me I has a wii u. Also, can someone help me decide? I am trying to pick between wind waker hd and pokemon omega ruby. I preordered my super smash bros bundle already so yea.
Shayan Siddiqi Hmm, will you explode with happiness if you were to get Pokemans? If not, I think you'd be better off with Zelda. It's a tough decision though...
I don't see a purpose of taking out the 0.2 I mean yeah you said that it shows age at certain times therefor it can't really be perfect but if it's gonna be that close might as well just give it the 10
Twilight princess HD, wind waker HD, Ocarina of time, skyward Sword, and Majora's mask for switch Make it happen nintendo :) please I would cry happy tears
for every zelda video i watch and read the comments for, especially for the 3d zelda games, i find legions of fans that are willing to defend that particular game to the death. And there are 5 of them. i guess that proves how stellar the franchise is as a whole for cranking out masterpieces time and time again.
in japan they said zelda is not actually an action RPG, it's more like an action adventure game, they even named a lot's of other games that we all know today considered an action RPG as they're not, they said some developers may call their games an action RPG so it can easily sold, plus they said the true RPG games is actually the turn based ones like the old final fantasy games for an example, so i guess Zelda is just an action adventure with a few RPG elements.
I haven't played tons of zleda games, i've played ocarina of time, this, and link between worlds, and i've seen my sister play some others such as twilight princess. but I have to say, after playing this game for the first time, this is a very fun game. I could play it over & over again!!
This game is a masterpiece and fixes every issue with the original. This is how a remake is done. Well done Nintendo for making such a fantastic game. Worth every penny.
@@diegomarquez3293 actually tbh majoras mask and ocarina need an update for the switch. The camera angles on the 64 aged poorly even if the story held up
thank you nintendo, this remake is awesome, but can we have something new now, making remakes of past games/tons of throwbacks to older games can only take you so far.
Im not trying to start a debate or anything but if you didn't know Nintendo is working to release a new TLoZ in the near future while the next installment in the series is developed. But it's a spin-off, sorta like Links Crossbow Training to make time for the next one. Oh and it's called "TLoZ Hyrule Warriors" but the name is not final.
I was laughing at the assclowns who said the games graphics sucked then and i'm laughing even more now. People that quit the game because of the water... you missed out on an amazing game! The water wasn't THAT bad, once you got the ability to teleport it wasn't an issue and there was always something fun to find out on the ocean! A co-worker of mine said he quit playing due to the water, well now they have the faster sails without the need for the wind waker wand changing the wind! Don't pass on this game! It's one of the best in the series by far!
The reason why people in here are talking about "too much water" is because IGN reviewed Pokemon ORAS and gave the game a 7.8 due to too much water, even though the plot and focus of the game revolves around land vs water like the original. And because Windwaker is 80% water, people are pointing out the fact that both games are similar plot wise (obv not play wise) but while one just had the amount of water pointed out and no gameplay, features, or graphics looked at, the other had all that stuff talked about except the amount of water. Its the glaring inconsistency that people are making fun of.
EQOAnostalgia I know I'm late to this so sorry but I have nothing better to do. Ign has a bunch of different editors who rate games and now there is typically only one person per game. So if a different person reviewed it they might if given it a 7.8 on account of too much water
Noah Elliott The irony is that the person that reviewed this Zelda and Pokemon ORAS was the SAME person (The same one that gave ORAS 7.8). So having a different reviewer probably wouldnt have done much lol.
I'm playing on my Emulator with Wind Waker. And I've got to say, this is the best Zelda Game I've played. Don't get me wrong, Ocarina of Time was amazing. But I think Wind Waker suited me the best. It's cartoony feel, the amazing sceneries, sweet story. I'm loving it. I'm a bit down that I can't play Wind Waker HD yet but I'm still happy that I get to play it on the emulator. I'm still not yet done with this amazing game and I hope that Nintendo gets to publish more of these 'Toon Link' kinds of Zelda series I agree with your score. Although I could've given my 2 cents about Wind Waker's cons. Cheers!
***** You MUST be younger! 3d zelda or not the list goes as follows: 1. A link to the past (SNES) 2. OOT 3. Majoras mask 4. Links awakening 5. twilight princess
No no no, you're wrong. OOT is not overrated, it is claimed as the best game of all time by both fans and critics because of its innovations that helped today's video games be what they are today in different ways. The touching story, badass enemies, the environment and gameplay the music and showed how much of a badass Link can be, but of course these are just popular opinions. But, all these opinions helped the game become the best game of all time, which is a fact as it still stands as the best game of all time. That said, there has been new different games that have surpassed OOT in gameplay, story and many other aspects but it doesn't change the fact that OOT introduced most of these things, other games are doing the same today and maybe even better, which might be the case of SS, OOT is just considered overrated by those who disagree that is the best game of all time, which is fine it's all opinions. With that said I still prefer Majora's Mask as my favorite, again that's just an opinion, to me as an individual with the right to a different opinion, Majora's Mask is the best game there is.
I was young(er) when this game came out, and I was old enough to appreciate a Zelda game, but for whatever reason, I didn't buy it. I'm actually kind of glad that I didn't now though, because I've heard from multiple sources that anybody who gets to experience this game for the first time with this version is extremely lucky. Can't wait to play it :)
Yeah, only because there's a way to speed up hours upon hours of pointless un interactive long sailing that turned a bit of people including myself off from the game.
Randy Howell I'm actually quite patient, and enjoy scenery. I don't think that would have been a big deal to me if I did my first play-through in the original. I did actually try the original on GameCube a few times for a few minutes, and I loved it whenever I had the chance.
pglAymer I guess saying that the sailing part is what turned me off from the game was a bit of an over exaggeration, I didn't so much as get turned off from the whole game in general then I did just a tad bored with this part, I suppose im just more into the traditional put on your tunic, take your sword and shield and on foot explore the vast land of Hyrule and what wonders it has to offer, I still like Wind Waker and it's story and mysteries, but its goanna take me some time to break into the whole sailing thing.
Randy Howell I'm sure there's more than just ocean to explore though right? Also, the speed sail will eliminate the long sailing times, so it sounds like the remake would be right up your alley.
Yeah, that's where the problem kind of comes in at, I got the original GameCube version so I didn't have to spend nearly over 200 dollars on a Wii U. Regarding the sailing parts im sure there's a lot more just then ocean too, but to get to these places takes a bit of time which originally wasn't a big problem since I knew my destination and what had to be done, and then I got the master sword and it seemed like the story really started to take off from there, unfortunately a bit of the tediousness kind of comes in after you beat the forsaken fortress for the second time. Im currently stuck like chuck trying to figure out how to obtain items that'll allow entrance into the next dungeons in the game, and sure I can get directions from that fish dude which he'll say something like sail five blocks north and three blocks east from here or something like that, but I'll reach the destination only to find out WHAT! I can't get into this place either, so I have to then retrace my steps In a boat that takes quite a while to get from point A to point B, and after try to uncover more info on the task at hand, I think in one day I spent about four hours max on the boat then actually doing anything else.
+Angel Zuniga I don't remember it being that confusing. Felt at first to be a little bit for kids because of the childish visuals. My opinion is going off of a 13 year old memory so it won't be that accurate
I enjoyed the water in windwaker hd, it was gorgeous, I didn't even know there was a better sail until late in the game, I didn't mind the long trips, they were relaxing and enjoyable
I love this. The wii u is nintendo's first HD home console, so it makes sense that they're making a lot of remakes and throwbacks (virtual console, wind Waker, Ducktales). I'm all for it. I love retro games and I'm looking forward to see what nintendo will remake next. You go, nintendo.
The only HD remake nintendo has done since the wii-u's release, pretty sad when you think of all the missed opportunities. this game is absolutely great. now fingers crossed for the TP rumor
Agreed. I saw no difference in the graphics, but HD does include high resolution, and I´ve already waited long enough for Zelda U, so I can wait more. Pleased to see that now almost all mainstream zelda games will be on the Wii U.
I like that as well. I said it upon the release of WW HD that TP should be on the list for next. Too bad that things at Nintendo are taking so long in general. Personally i would love to see HD remakes of F-zero GX (which still looks fantastic) Metroid prime 1, Sunshine, Eternal darkness etc. Too bad that Nintendo didn't step in to retouch some classics. 2 games with just a HD remake on a HD console that has the capabilities is very little. But i'm looking forward to get TP. March is not such a brilliant release time, close to starfox too. Holidays would have been way better.
Ahmad SA That would have been a very good addition! Both great and colorful game as well and great for a HD remake. Actually i though we were gonna get that but sadly no ..
Is just frustrating how nintendo hasnt bring this and Twilight to the switch, why the heck did we get Skyward rematstered instead of windwaker? Dont they know the gamecube zelda is more popular?
People, stop saying too much water, look at the planet your living on, gonna say theres too much water here too. Wind waker is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000/10
This was the game that defined my childhood. It looks down on it and says. "You had a fucking awesome childhood." The game has aged exceptionally well. The combat is better than any other Zelda game. The graphics still look great. In 2077 when the world finally goes to nuclear war. I will play this game. Also WW> MM and OOT.
I agree completely with this guy. This game looks terrific, even still on the GameCube, it's so memorable in its story and characters, and the combat is so smooth and reliable. In my opinion, this zelda is not only the best 3d zelda, but the best zelda overall.
WiiU is like the best console to play Zelda games. You (will) have The very first HD TLoZ, 2 HD ports which are WW and TP, also VR titles Zelda 1, Zelda 2 Adventure of Link, A Link between Worlds, Ocarina of Time, Minish Cap, Phantam Hourglass & Spirit Tracks. You could basiclly make a Zelda marathon just with the WiiU itself. JUST AWESOME!!!
