Salvador Sanchez - Was a Mexican professional boxer born in the town of Santiago Tianguistenco, Estado de México. Sanchez was the WBC and lineal Featherweight champion from 1980 to 1982. Many of his contemporaries as well as boxing writers believe that had it not been for his premature death, Sánchez could have gone on to become the greatest Featherweight boxer of all time. He was well known for his incredible conditioning and excellent composure in the ring, Sánchez often never changed expression. Nicknamed "Chava", he held victories over multiple world champions including; Wilfredo Gomez, Danny Lopez, Azumah Nelson and Juan LaPorte. Sánchez died on August 12, 1982 in a car accident from Querétaro to San Luis Potosí. He is also the uncle of Salvador Sánchez II. He ultimately finished his career 44-1-1 and was posthumously inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991. Truly one of the greatest fighters in history P4P.

Salvador is my favorite boxer of all time! I can't imagine how much more he could accomplish. Generally speaking, great boxers reach their prime at 28 or 29. (Sugar Ray, Robinson, Ali, Marvin, etc) Imagine this specimen at that age.

Saw him live as a kid. My grandpa talked about him constantly. We kinda bonded on Salvador. Felt personally robbed when he went. Imagine the era and how he would've fit in? A rematch with Azumah, maybe some wars with the dudes from 130, and then a fight with Julio at 135 around 1988. For all we know, he coulda been the best ever.

He moves like he's floating on air and he has the most calm mannerisms and expressions I've ever seen on a fighter. Even between rounds he seemed distracted but still managed to fight masterfully. The fact that someone this skillful and technically gifted was only 23 when he died is beyond astounding to me, he looked like he had the experience of a 35 year old but we never even got to see him fully develop.

Complete fighter! Offensively, he could do it all. He could be very slick at times, had an A+ chin and THE best stamina I have ever seen. My 4th favorite fighter ever.

The great Savador Sanchez, what an incredible fighter. The encounters with Danny Lopez, Juan Laporte in the battle for San Juan, and that soon to be great Azuma Nelson, I saw them all as a kid on World of Sport on Saturday afternoons. Great days never to be forgotten.

Losing this great, great complete package fighter is one of boxing's biggest tragedies. He out boxed the boxers and out slugged the sluggers and no one seems to talk about his underrated defensive skills. Had he been able to reach his full potential he would have gone down in history in at least the top three all time greats if not the very best. Thank you for posting this and thank you Salvador Sanchez for the brief greatness you shared with us!

If it weren’t for his untimely death he might’ve went on to be the greatest boxer of all time. He was only 23 and had wins over Danny Lopez twice, Azumah Nelson, and Wilfredo Gomez. All by knockout.

In fact many people say his time was the most competitive and dangerous in the history of the sport... but aside from all that being the most gifted (speed,power,footwork,balance,infighting,outfighting, ect ect) Is skill oriented, but that doesn't make someone better necessarily... take marciano for example. Everyone he fought had better skills. But he beat them all. And knocked out most of them. See what I'm trying to say?

@@daniaalali4658 I disagree. Robinsons record is truly remarkable Givin the amount of fights he had and who he fought. But resume is not the discussion here. Many boxing historians and sports analysis say Ray Robinson was indeed the most gifted fighter of all time and the greatest fighter who ever lived. Ray got hit because Ray threw alot of punches against very good sluggers like Basilio, Lamatta, fullmer, ect.

I remember watching his fights as a kid. I’ve been a fan of the sweet science all my life and have admired many guys over the yrs - Dwight Braxton, Hagler, Pac-man, etc are the the type of fighter’s fighter that I like - but to me Sánchez was the greatest of them all. He is the James Dean of boxing...a supernova that was taken from us way too early.

Wow! He was a complete boxer! Nice fast well timed pumches that could actually fimish a guy, not to mention crisp head movement and footwork. I'm sure he would've held on to the title for a long time barring his unfortunate/untimely demise.

It's absolutely amazing to watch this and then realize he was dead by the age of 23. That means it's possible he could've become even MORE dominant in the ring. I've heard Roy Jones say he regards Sanchez as one of the two or three best fighters ever, and who could argue.

It depends, back in the day with fighting more frequently, more rounds, better opposition and not as much ducking some fighters aged allot faster. Remember everyone felt Tyson's best years were his early 20s.

Sal Sanchez... some of his opponents belive they had a chance to beat him when they connect him on the first rounds, but when the fight gets old and they watch the same expression on the face of salvador with not a single trace tiredness is when they abandoned all hope of victory... they only see a machine coming for them that cannot be stoped.

@Omni King A number of years ago, Ring magazine had a fantasy Featherweight tournament. They had Arguello losing to Pep in the Finals. I know that is a fantasy scenario, but an argument could be made for Arguello at Feather. I guess I got him just a little higher there than you do. Respect to your opinion. Amazing Ring Champion. 15 Greatest of all time. The most rare skill He had was a calculating, measured, all-knowing, balanced, patient tactician. Knew when and when not to punch. Knew what the opponent was doing, and could, or might do. Total complete Ring vision and understanding. Grasped spatial movement with ultimate skill. Rarely ever out of position receiving punching and always in position to punch with exact purpose. Excellent footwork. He had a chin. Boxing was not his main goal. He was going to be a DOCTOR.

El mejor boxeador que ha existido para mi gusto...... tenia todo “sal”, tecnica magnifica, juego de pies, derecha, izquierda, uppers, defensa, buena mandibula, bending, swing, tal vez su unico punto debil era la defensa, pero en sus ultimas peleas ya la estaba mejorando y sobretodo que era mexicano eso significa que tenia el corazon de guerrero..... jamas se hecho para atras... mi unico idolo del deporte

The second best featherweight in history behind Willie Pep. Definitely would be number 1 if not for his untimely death. He had everything. Great boxing ability, a good defense, and power to put opponents down after they were hurt. Just imagine how great he could have been.
