Back when this first came out I read a great movie review. The reviewer watched it with his young son and when it was over he asked his son if he liked it and his son was in awe and said, "It's exactly how I picture it in my head when I play with Lego!"

The amount of detail that went into this movie was phenomenal. They had the original piece models from Lego, but they also 3D scanned a bunch of actual pieces, both brand new and used, so they could see how they differed from the original models and how they wore and scuffed over time. Then they sat down and wrote shaders to randomly add those effects to the models that were computer generated, so you get random fingerprints, scratches, scuffs and all kinds of marks on every piece.

Benny is from the space sets from the 1980s. They were quite popular, but as with most things, that popularity faded and the line came to an end. His model is scuffed in the way that minifigures from that era wear and his helmet is broken because it was one of the most commonly broken pieces from that era. The helmets were redesigned to make them more sturdy after that.

Fun fact time: The reason the blue spaceman has a small crack in his helmet is because the original spacemen range was known to have a weakness in that spot due to the manufacturing process When LEGO asked DC if they could use Batman, they were originally turned down, since DC are very protective of Batman (They thought Batman being too light-hearted would ruin people's impression of him. Therapist here - the whole "and what would he say?" role play of asking the son to 'pretend' to say what he really feels is actually SUPER effective in therapy. It provides people the psychic distance to say what they're perhaps afraid to say or admit to feeling while also letting it out. It admittedly sounds really silly, but when deployed effectively in therapy, it can really break down walls. People often end up crying while saying what some 'other' pretend figure would say in a situation. It's quite powerful and beautiful when done appropriately.
@MusikCassette

Isn't the whole point of therapy to be able to talk to someone about your feelings without being afraid to admit you feel them? Why would you ask someone to pretend to say what they really feel? Maybe this is why therapists don't like me.
@mj_SR22
@mj_SR22 9 месяцев назад
@@Dusk.EighthLegion Great question! The point of therapy broadly speaking is to become more fully and safely present to who you are, that you might then find ways to live a more fully authentic life. But even when speaking to a professional whose whole job is to be nonjudgmental and help you, that doesn't mean sharing how you feel might not be scary. We can feel scared to be present to how we feel for fear of how others may react, yes. But we can also be scared for fear of how we may react to them ourselves. We might judge ourselves, be scared to admit them, not like where a feeling brings us, or have traumatic past experiences that cause certain feelings to trigger fear responses in the body. By asking a person to "pretend" to say what they feel you are giving them a way to both access how they feel and keep a bit of psychic distance from it if they aren't fully ready or able to access those feelings yet. It's a bridge toward building more access, a technique, not the end goal. And we do this all the time in ordinary life. We rarely just frankly say how we feel (to a boss, a stranger, a crush, etc.). Instead we have small ways of saying how we feel and protecting ourselves. Totally normal. But sometimes accessing a feeling can feel so scary that we can't even admit to them -- but the feeling remains important and unable to be healed still. So this kind of technique allows for a compromise. It's a way of building some safety, not only with the therapist, but yourself. You get to 'dip your toes' in the water of the feeling before jumping in all the way. But don't take some internet rando's word for it. The next time you say you 'kinda' feel some way, are upset but claim to be 'fine,' etc., just notice that you're feeling something but perhaps not yet ready to delve into it. That's the ordinary version of this. Also, in trauma situations, the brain literally tries to stop you from feeling. It jumps on the slightest hint of it with anxiety, what if thinking, dissociation, rushes to substance use, etc. Anything to get away from the feeling. These kinds of compromise techniques allow us to access feelings before the brain completely shuts it down. And in doing so, the brain/body realize we're safe and so allow us to access a bit more feeling. And so on and so on. As for why therapists don't like you, I always tell people if you think your therapist doesn't like you that you should just ask them. Say why you think that and ask them. Who knows, might find something really helpful from it. Good therapists can and should be able to have those conversations. Either way, all the best to you!

I think the series is worth continuing. Please note, that even though Lego 2 is the direct sequel, Lego Batman also references the first movie, and it chronologically fits, as the next chapter. It's also briefly and indirectly referenced by Lego 2. I would watch Lego Batman next. Who knows, you might just decide that it's your favorite Batman movie. WB produced the Lego movies, or rather their animation division. DC wouldn't have been much of a problem to use. Star Wars might have posed some difficulty, but Fox was pretty friendly. I don't know about Benny's popularity, but they did have some space themed sets at the time, and they featured characters that looked like Benny. Benny was like the Emmet of the spaceship sets, in that he wasn't supposed to represent anyone in particular. It's amazing how the film starts out fun, then gets REALLY deep at the end. I don't think there will be anything like it soon. I suggest you enjoy the sequels (starting with Batman) while you can.

The "Retro Spaceship" guy/sets were massively popular back in the day, but it's had a bunch of updates. I recall when I was a kid (the 80s/90s) they started making M-Tron (which were black, red, and neon green, and started incorporating little magnets into their designs), Blacktron (black and yellow), and Space Police (blue white and red) to add more of a narrative or something I guess. Anyways, the long and short of it is that the new sets very quickly eclipsed the old ones, and the (superior, now that I look back at it as an adult) retro space Lego quickly became extremely out-of-fashion. So yeah, to answer your question, retro space Lego was beloved for a time, but Lego themselves ditched it for cops-and-robbers-and-magnets.

I believe that the movie was produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Since Warner Bros. owns DC, they were able to use all those DC and Warner Bros. characters like Batman, Superman, Dumbledore, and Galdalf (New Line Cinema made LOTR, and New Line is a division of WB). They also probably had the rights to use characters that LEGO had already created building sets for, like Han Solo and the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars (Star Wars was previously a Twentieth Century Fox property but is now owned by Disney.)

RE: Simone saying "people who want to glue things should build models," yep. That's why I build models. But it's radically different. Good model building takes a degree of craftsmanship. I think that's why the "working towards a thing that just sits on the shelf" is okay with me. I get a lot of satisfaction out of creating fine crafts. Lego CAN be for that? Like if you look at the "Master" sets; the ones clearly made for adults. My friend builds those. It's a balance thing! Some people like building things to look at. (Whether the makers themselves would describe their joint effort thusly, I'm not inclined to place any bets.) This was an unexpected pleasure. Also one of the best 3-D movies I've ever seen. I feel that CG animation works better as 3-D than anything else, especially in a theater. Live-action 3-D just looks weird, unless it's in "Gravity" or one of the "Avatar" movies.
@JuryRigged
@JuryRigged 9 месяцев назад
I don't know about Gravity, but most live-action 3D is post-process editing. For Avatar (and naturally for animated movies), Cameron put a lot of work in (I believe with his preferred cinematographer) to develop a very small *very* good dual-camera, well, camera, so it is *filmed* in 3D. Not enough movies picked it up because it's, ugh, *hard to use*, but I think the difference is worth it.
@CineRam
@CineRam 9 месяцев назад
@@JuryRigged Most of "Gravity" is CGI, with only the faces of the actors actually photographed for real. The rest of the scene (including the bodies of the astronauts in their space-suits) is visual effects. However, there are a few instances of live, on-set 3-D cinematography. The percentage of live 3-D cinematography in "Avatar" is much higher, but still, an overwhelming amount of scenes are entirely CGI, and that amount is even higher for the sequel. I'm aware of the post-conversion process for most movies, especially Marvel Studios, but I don't usually see the 3-D versions. I tend to only go for 3-D if it's a CG-animated movie, such as "Minions" "Zootopia" or this one.

Accidentally loses the manuals and builds the sets from memory, rebuilds the sets with different pieces and colors to make certain parts to the set pop out more. Kid's gonna be a hell of a mechanical engineer.

When I was a child of about 10 years, I was visiting another family, where the oldest child was about 8 years, and this child was actually glueing the LEGO pieces together. I was flabbergasted (and remember it still, more than 40 years later).

Few years ago I saw this a 2nd time with my younger cousin at my parents'. Mom overheard "Everything is Awesome" and asked/implied the song and/or movie was about conformity or a sort of shallow, childish message of teamwork. I was internally laughing as I explained how satirical it actually is...and yet of course, she's not entirely wrong, since the climax actually embraces both. Individual and team. Adherence to instruction and uncontrolled creativity. Business, pleasure. Order, chaos. Adult, child. Wonderful storytelling, selling toys. It's impressive how it has its cake and eats it too! (And, many kids just hummed "EVERYTHING IS AWESOME WHEN YOU'RE PART OF THE TEAM" for weeks and didn't get the satirical side of it...)

I feel like for all its virtues, Barbie didn't quite hit the emotional resonance The Lego Movie did as far as the real world parent-child relationship, I think because they were trying to do say number of different things whereas this had one very clear theme to keep building on. It'll be interesting to see how it ages once its out of the zeitgeist compared to something like this. I'll join plenty of other comments requesting you watch The Lego Batman movie, genuinely top tier. Also on DC, I just think it'd be funny to watch Simone watch James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

To answer your question the entire film (minus the live-action section and the credits, which was made using real legos) was made with CGI, all of it, the animators were asked to follow the logics of stop-motion as closely as possible to add to the realism. This movie is probably the best CGI movie of all time in my opinion, the attention to detail is insane, the animators went so far as to have the legos have imperfections like scratches and stains and that makes it look so real and I really think that makes the whole message of it feel even more impactful because you end up believing the whole thing goes beyond a child's imagination, or at least that's how I feel.

The underlying theme of the film really captured the _essence_ of Lego, with a real and emotionally resonant message. This is how you write a movie - not just a product movie, but _any_ movie.

I'm personally biased in preferring this over Barbie due to the fact this came out when I was almost 18, Toy Story was the first movie I ever watched, and I grew up playing with Bionicles and assembling my own creations. But most importantly it reminded me of the last words my late auntie said to me, I started calling her by her actual name to the fact that I was 16 and felt calling her auntie still was a bit childish, she asked "can you please call me auntie instead?" I saw that as a metaphor about not being ashamed of who you are shouldn't feel like you need to conform. So, when I saw this when it came out, it hit every emotional note inside me. So seeing you both getting emotional as well makes me glad that I wasn't just being the lone weirdo for crying in the theater. Kudos.

this is my proof that no matter the concept, if its something for childrens or to sell toys, if you have a good talent a people behind the scenes any movie or show can be amazing, they didnt have to go this hard for a lego movie, but Miller and Lord take something simple and make it super deep and heartwarming, not even talking about the great work of the animators and the cast, and i always say you should get real voice actors for movies to, but having Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson in such goofy characters is a delight

I don't know about the other licenses, but if the directors hadn't locked in Star Wars when they did, if they'd waited a week later, they wouldn't have got it - as the rights went to Disney. The Barbie movie is an apt comparison - both that and The Lego Movie understood to celebrate what the franchise actually MEANS to people and not just be product placement, and were deeply emotional as a result. And both had Will Farrell as the business bad guy! Definitely continue to The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Movie 2. They're SO GOOD too!

One of my favorite movies. I have quite the nostalgia for it as I saw it come out during my high school days & saw the tie-in toy line with creative & clever builds new in stores. The film crew basically took the lemon of an idea of a LEGO commercial stretched out to film length & made quite the tasty lemonade with it. The animation is apparently mostly CGI, but deliberately animated to mimic stop motion LEGO videos. Along with adding quite the details like the scratches and fingerprints to the models. The Classic Space Guy, Benny, is based on a old LEGO line from the 70s. It has quite the nostalgia driven cult following lately. Even got a new anniversary set recently. I recommend checking out The LEGO Batman Movie. It’s somehow widely considered one of the best Batman movies out there. And it’s as fun as this one. Fun video overall, especially seeing your doubts on this film proven wrong.

I had that spaceman.. and his helmet was for sure cracked. I also had many many knight kingdom castles, space ships, all sorts.. I even built a cyclops robot thing with movable joints which looked oddly like the pirate except slightly smaller. I've heard Lego are now worth more than their weight in gold.. Ok, golds heavy, but still.

What I love about this movie is it explores a real deep divide between LEGO Enthusiasts: the people who just like to follow the instructions and build what's on the box, put it on a shelf and display it, and people who like to mix and match, create their own stuff, and create adventures. And the movie ends with Emmet and Lord Business, who represent each side of this coin, embracing and recognizing both of these ways of enjoying LEGO are valid, and one shouldn't look down on or stifle the other.

I love the idea of the Lego world being mixed with things from "the real world" - like Krazy Glue, a golf ball, Q-tips, a 9 volt battery...I did the exact same thing when I was a kid, mixing up my toys. We used Lego to build a headquarters for our 8-inch Mego action figures. A Q-tip fit in each of the plastic hands and became magic wands. We used a G.I. Joe figure (12-inches tall) as "Giant-Man" for our 8-inch Mego figure Avengers. A Mr. Spock head on a stripped down naked body (the crotch area was solid blue, looking like a speedo) was Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner...
