I have watched several reviews of the Q3, and all of them dove straight into the camera's technical features, which is useful to be sure. You, however, spoke on a personal level about your connection to the camera and to photography. I truly enjoyed hearing a review from that perspective. I managed to purchase the Q3, and even though I've used it very little thus far, I can already tell I am going to really enjoy this camera. I can already tell I will dive into this camera just to see where it will take me, just for the joy of it. Thank you for your perspective on this wonderful camera!
You can crop in a 28mm to 50mm but you can't zoom out a 50mm fixed lens & not always you can just step even few steps back. But you can always (mostly) take few steps ahead. 28mm is perfection. Love your portraits 😍👏
@@brunob8827 compression is not caused by focal length. It's caused by distance to subject. Just search a video called focal length doesn't matter and it will show up.
@@brunob8827 the compression is the same, it's the depth of field that changes, understanding is only an optical effect; there is no change in compression or perspective
Very seldom do I miss not having a tilting screen on my Q2. I have come to the conclusion that it it is due to the focal length giving such a wide field of view that in many cases you just have to point in a general direction and trust the autofocus or manually zone focus to just point and shoot.
I would like to see a portrait of several individuals side-by-side with the Q3. The wide angle distortion of people or other objects on the same plane has been my main problem with the Q2. Thanks for the great review. I am tempted except for the 28mm.
Great video with useful and insightful thoughts and experiences. I would like to see the Q3 run through it's paces of ISO and night shoots. Let's see what this new processor can do!
I love your reviews and I love your photographs....just wonderful work !! I have a question on your use of the Q3-do you use the crop modes and if so which ones or all ? Thank you in advance
Love the video!!! I've had my heart set on a Q2 Monochrom, but after this video you completely have me considering this Q3! I just know when I buy it they will announce the Q3 monochrom 🤦🤦🤦
Best thing i like about the Q Series cameras is NO SENSOR DUST since you aren't ever going to change lenses, cant wait for these to be readily available, im guessing 4-6 months.
@@paulreidphotography I only bought 6 months ago (used) and will use it until it falls apart. Love the simplicity and brilliant image quality and colour science
Such a cool review .. we’ll done, all I needed to know in order to make a decision Q2/Q3. All I need now is a decent printer or lab in order to get pictures on my walls again instead of on a hard drive
Wow your film making skills are sublime. The pacing, atmospheric sounds filtering in and out, beautifully shot talking head & you articulate so beautifully (lovely accent helps!) Subscribed. Leica Q3 on the way, hopefully doesn’t take months and months.
Thanks for watching. I wish I could take credit for the film making on this one. I have a guy called Adam do some of my videos now and again who has a video business called AJR visuals.
Sir thank you very much, Great video. Hello, I have a serious problem with the Leica Q3 I just bought. The camera's settings constantly change without my consent. For example, the setting I made to shoot only DNG changes to DNG&JPG. Then I set the ISO to 100 and it automatically switches to Auto ISO without my consent. This problem also occurs also in some other settings. I tried to solve the problem with my own means, but I couldn't. Maybe am I doing something wrong while adjusting the settings? Do I need to lock the settings I made? If so, how and how is locking done? I would appreciate it if you could guide me on how to solve my problem. With thanks,
Agree with each one of our thoughts. As someone that comes from the film area, it took me a long time to find a camera that feel correct. My only critique to this camera is the weight. I wish it would be more compact like the discontinued Leica CL.
First thing I've seen with out and I really enjoyed it, terrific presentation and some absolutely beautiful photos! Only critique I might have is that you should perhaps include some more of those photos in the video even though it was great seeing that photo wall. I agree with wide angle portraits intimacy, they are far more interesting IMO and some of my better ones or the best ones have been with wider angle lenses. The Q3 is for sure on my list and might just be the next thing to get rather than another lens for my Lumix S1R. Hope you will get a lot more subscribers, you deserve it! One new with me at least 🙂
Well done brother. Loved the video and the photos. As someone who currently shoots with the Q2, I loved seeing your shots and take on the camera. Might be worth the upgrade!
Dears, could i find some raw files gallery or could someone be so kind to share a random raw photo? Consider getting the q3 but would like to see how much better the raw images are compared to my current a7rv
How are you still finding this camera, also is the q2 monochrome good for wedding and portraits, is the monochrome camera any different than just converting a colour image to black and white?
I don’t have the Q3 now. Just the Q2M. I don’t have room for both in my life and I still favour the Q2M. There are advantages to the Q2M. Maybe watch the latest video and I explain a bit about that.
I like your photo wall, have you printed these yourself? I'd like to see something about that wall, is it a dynamic setup, what printer do you have, if any?
The wall is my way of getting rid of what photos I love and which ones mean nothing to me. I aim to publish a book this year. They are just cheap prints really for that purpose
A dedicated monochrome camera doesn’t require a colour filter array… Colour images are produced by interpolating monochrome data through the filter array, so a pure monochrome camera will always outperform a colour one - unless you want a colour image 😉 Instead of all of the video, terminals and “Crop” crap I would prefer to see a sturdier build with greater water and dust protection, and dual card slots. As for the flip(ping) screen, it’s just something that increases the potential for failure. If a photographer puts in the time to learn his craft then he knows what’s in the frame without having to look through a viewfinder
Hi Mike, I’ve shot on the Q2 Monochrom for 2 and a half years. I know exactly what you mean. However shoot both cameras at 200iso and it would be very difficult to tell the difference if at all. My Q2 Monochrom still feels like home to me. Thanks for watching the video.
So I am using the "normal" Q and I've been thinking about upgrading but I just don't think its worth it in terms of MP's and the flipping screen. I have tried one out and it feels a bit cheap in terms of build quality comparing it to the first Q.
…till you find another camera, then it’ll be the only camera you could ever dream of… …till you find another camera, then it’ll be the only camera you could ever want… …till you find another camera, then it’ll be the only camera you could ever need… and so on… we get it 👍
In fact the first Leica Q is the only camera I would ever need. But if I was buying a brand new Q camera right now and needed colour then the Q3 is the one
In fact the Q2 is the only camera I would ever need. Or the Q! Cameras are updated with everyone’s wish list if we are lucky. The new features on the Q3 were all requested by the community. No doubt we will all have some other wishes now we have what we asked for.
This philosophy is against physiology - it is proven humans are having issues remembering things happening quickly like short scenes less than 5-10 seconds. That’s why you get out from cinema after you watched a marvel movie and cannot remember anything. Plus there is no chance to build up viable character.
I love the way your portraits look. Would love to see a video of you processing them. From your mononchrome and from colour files. A video on how to maximise your mononchrome files? Love your videos. Thanks.
Q user here, with a Q3 order pending delivery. Would also love to see more on your post-processing, especially mimicking the Q2 Monochrom look with the Q3.
The problem is while travelling. I travel to more rough countries and areas where you definitely don't want a camera that's worth more than a year salary over there. I've got cameras stolen etc and was really happy I did not have a Leica by then. Still got great images and felt more secure in my mind knowing I'm not carrying a fortune.
Great pictures, by a great photographer on a great camera. My Q2 made me love photography. I will be a Q person for life and I believe the upgrade is worth it as there are numerous extra features. In car terms, this is a completely new model, rather than a facelift.
Liked your presentation style. The camera’s features were presented, directly without hyperbole, supported with examples. Worth watching more than once to insure nuances were not missed. Thanks!
Would have preferred a 35mm but 28mm is fine for me. If Leica comes out with a nifty fifty version I’d buy that to go along with the 28. Easier to carry two fairly light weight cameras then change lenses when your walking around. Great review love the calmness and patient quality you have.
I will be swapping my Q2 for a Q3 as soon as possible because of the sensor. Not for all those lovely 60mp but because it’s a triple resolution, pixel binning BSI sensor. Being able to resolve at 18mp but still using the full back lit sensor will make it an incredible camera for low light shooting
Wonderful video, Paul! (The reader comments below are also well written and helpful.) I've been thinking over the last day about what the Q2 gives me in my portraits and could not find anything (so far) in the Q3 that would make me switch. Sure, the flip screen might be a nice thing to have at times (definitely for a street photographer)... but my subjects KNOW they are being photographed so there is no need to 'sneak' a shot. lol 47mp also sits at the absolute sweet spot for resolution as well.... 60mp (I get that with a Canon 5DSR) simply adds more time retouching skin blemishes and pores in the type of work I do. The focusing on the Q2 is perfectly fine and the recent eye tracking software upgrade solves any lingering frustrations! Cheers, mate!
Thanks so much. I think for slow moving subjects, especially portraits there’s maybe not that much to upgrade for. I did find the medium DNG file setting handy at a wedding though
Hi Paul, great video, I just ordered one Q3 as I already wanted to order a Q2, but then the Q3 was released and I like the 28mm and the tilting screen and the idea to crop into a 60MP frame inside the camera. I just shot since the last 6month with the Fujifilm X100V and the 23mm (35mm equivalent) limits me as I could not always step backwards. As well there is some magic around the brand Leica and I want once in my life to own one. Now my dream comes true. Next week I turn back to Germany and will hold in my hands. It was delivered yesterday and I’m quiet curious if the magic will influence my work. I follow your channel and stay in touch. All the best Peter
Dear Sir, Thank you vey much for the absolutely superb video. You create Art. Also It is the only video that is mentioned why not 50mm lens. Which brings me to my question. I was just about to get the Q3 because I love photographing concerts and night Street photography with long far away buildings and small people scattered in, but also with the ability for portraits. And your portaits are spectacular. But Now that Q3 43 is out. may I please ask for your advise considering the above. And if it was you, having now to choose between the two what would be your choice. Kindly help me choose. And this black with low ISO is of such value to know. Thank you very much. and look eagerly looking for your reply
Thanks Connor, it’s a fairly new channel really that I never really intended for anything else other than to show my photos big on a tv. But I’m into it now! Ha haa
I have the Q2M. If someone offered me a Q3 if I traded my Q2M in and handed over an extra £200, I'd do it. The flip-out screen and extra resolution are worth that much. But if I was starting from scratch I think I'd be looking for a secondhand Q or Q2/Q2M than Q3.
Great video ans great photos! for me having the Q2, the improvement I'm most expecting is in dynamic rage and low light sensitivity. Is a big improvement in the Q3.
35mm would have been my preference. I normally shoot 50-100mm even on street. I almost never shoot wider than 40mm. I was really hoping they would have 2 versions Q3-28 and Q3-35. Or even Q3-50
It seems that the flip out screen has divided the Leica purists. I'm a relative newcomer to Leica (about 6 months) using the Q2M and I see it as an improvement. Moving to a 50mm would have been too restrictive but the sweet-spot for me would have been a 35mm focal length. Yes, I know that with so much information from the new sensor a crop is possible but a cropped 28mm looks different. The biggest surprise for me was that it's only £200 dearer than the Q2!
Thing is, 28mm sucks....as only focal range, neither being fish or meat. If i go wide, i use my 20mm, 24mm prime. If i shoot one lens to rule them all - it's always being 35mm, forever & ever - for about 90%. For the rest, i use simply a zoom. 🙂 Yes, one could use digital crop...but then, it's not the same. For my taste, the Q series are (way) overpriced, and i say this with absolutely no social insecurities - i have serveral digital FF bodies, go figure. But not Leica. 🙂
heading to the Maldives in a few weeks... wanted to get your thoughts on buying one of these for travel... I'm tired of lugging my Sony A1 with all the glass.... I owned a Q a while back and miss it.... any of the Leica fans thoughts would be greatly appreciated..
A wonderful video. I take photos with a Canon R5 with a few interchangeable lenses. I'm really considering whether I should buy the Q3. I was impressed by your portrait and architecture shots. Since I really value my 24-70 mm, I'm not sure whether I'll be happy with the 28 mm fixed focal length. The temptation to give it a try is great. Best wishes, Ralf
Okay, I tried the Q3... but it's not for me. What I want when I photograph is to compose my picture at capture, not by cropping afterwards. So I need a compact with Zoom AND excellent lens quality (as good as the sum micron 28mm f1,7 ??). What would you recommend?
I don’t know of any compact zoom that is as good I’m afraid. The Leica SL zooms are excellent but very very big and not at all compact. The Fuji X100Vi has a great lens on it and is 35mm F2 equivalent and has 40MP for some extra cropping if you needed closer than that.
And is this truth, actually its a zoom lens. Because you have this crop functions (windows) and with the 60MP pixels you can crop to like 50mm or 85mm and thats the same like using a 50mm or 85mm lens. Am I right? So here we have also a 85mm portrait lense (when cropping)?
I personally shoot portraits on a 35mm at the moment and I'm planning to buy a Leica Q1 soon. Recently I had a shoot where I was forced to switch to my 85mm because the distance was too far for my 35mm. I agree 100% with what you said, I didn't hear the model and she didn't hear me, we still enjoyed the shoot but it took a lot of coordination because after being in position there was no way of talking anymore. I don't understand how people can have 100mm upwards as their main portrait lens, the look is great too in my opinion but there is just not really any connection to the models. I might also mention that I started to shift more towards full body portraits, I wouldn't use an 35mm for a really close-up Portrait, even tho it can be done with a good lens.
Allow me to disagree: I highly suggest that all Leica Q2 owners upgrade to a Q3. The difference is night and day and maybe then I'll be able to afford an used Q2.
What a great video of an excellent product. I really like how it wasnt a must buy promo. Id definitely hit the subscribe button and look forward to more content..A very relaxing watch. Thank you for sharing your day with us.
I like the look of your portraits. Can you do a video on how you achieve the background separation with a 28-mm lens and how you get the strong tonalities despite shooting in what seems natural light.
A good and informative video. I'm a Q2 owner along with a Canon 5Ds. I have owned a Q and now the Q2, both of which moved me away from the Canon, not because the Canon is a bad camera, far from it, but like you say the Leica makes you want to take pictures. Your Video makes a lot of sense to me and I'm now more excited about getting the Q3, which is on order, infact I'm also thinking of selling the Canon and sundry lenses to get myself a Q2 mono as well. I look forward to watching more of your videos...... keep up the good work.
I guess because I only really mess about with RAW files I don’t really have much use for them. Great for having straight out of the camera JPEG’s though
Nah, Sony a7c mark 2 will be a way better choice for travel/street etc. Q3 is too expensive to be all around camera- most of owners will limit themselves with leica coffee and mirror selfies, being afraid to take it out of their fancy bags on the streets…, and by the way- a single electronic glitch will transom this lens into a very expensive but useless piece of glass .
A great review, and a wonderful camera, no doiubt, but at £5,300 you have to be persuaded that your mobile phone is no longer capable of giving you good photos.
I’m addicted SL2-S shooter. It has the same batteries like the Q3. In Switzerland a spare battery (BP-SCL6) costs CHF 179.00. At that price point, there could be at least a protective box coming with it. At least kinda cap covering the contacts.
@@paulreidphotography Ouch. Do you know what happens with the Lithium if it comes in contact with a slightly little bit amount of water like condensing sweat if you are carrying them in the pockets of your pants? That ends with ugly burnings. The only thing you can do is getting rid of your pants as quick as possible, you can't stop that fire. I'm waiting for the day someone sues one of those companies delivering batteries without protecting case. Unfortunately - as always - someone has to get hurt first. Just because the companies (not only Leica) greedily don't add a protective case - costs: 1 cent - to the product. OM e.g. does, Fuji, Nikon and Canon also. Leica and Sony don't the other brands I don't know. I can't imagine the engineers at that companies don't know the dangers of Lithium. It's a management decision. Similar at Apple, no charger in the box since iPhone 12 (a > USD 1000 device). It's ridiculous.
I was waiting for your video Paul. I had been contemplating purchasing the M11M and one lens (as mentioned on another of your videos) but ultimately got my hands on the Q3 earlier today. I'm excited to get into the Leica world! Thanks for your video!
@@paulreidphotography I thought as much, you did trigger my curiousity in terms of street portraits, the more powerful kind. Have a 3 week holiday now so will put my old Leica X2 to the test for street portraits.
