As usual a great video Michael! You are one of my top 3 on RU-vid that I go to when I want comprehensive information regarding Vinyl and just music and equipment in general. Due to covid impacting my income I wasn't going to buy this box set. But then I thought about something you said in one of your videos, along the lines of "Life is short & unpredictable, have fun." So I decided bugger it I'll buy it. It's a great box for sure. And this represents what this great group did in ONE month!

I agree with the assumption of the Beetles bringing hope to a shattered nation. I was in the hospital when the boys were on Sullivan, getting last rights from a priest 3 times in two weeks. I was seven years old, jumping up and down in my hospital bed when they came on. My Mom always said it was then when she knew I’d recover. Thanks to the boys! Unlike most, I had heard the Beatles well before the Ed Sullivan appearance. My cousin had seen them play a club near London and said the were the best part of her trip. She also said they were on the BBC often, so I built a short wave radio to receive the BBC. I think it was the BBC WORLD SERVICE we were able to tune into. I’m still broken hearted about the murder of out President, but the Beatles arriving did lift the dark clouds and brought a great deal of joy to a 11 year old boy! Peace, DrRick

5 months? More like a month after the white album was released, Paul had the idea to perform the songs from the album live. White album was released in Nov 1968. They started filming in a Jan 2, 1969 so there had a to be a few weeks of talking and planning. This was supposed to be a documentary of them rehearsing the songs for the one time concert bug that was shelved immediately to make a new doc of writing news songs for the concert. It was never meant to be a movie. It was a tv documentary. That is why it was shot on 16 mm film. It was blown up and letterboxed for the movie in the theatre, which is why many things are cropped out and looks poorly framed.

Thanks for bring that up, Michael! I grew up in the '60s and '70s and try telling people how rare images of the Beatles were before John Lennon's death in 1980. Usually, the only poster you saw on peoples wall was the White Album poster, and the photos were the White Album photos were generally the only pictures you saw. In the late '70s Capitol included a 24"x24" folded poster of the 'Let it Be' album cover with LPs.There were exceptions with headshop posters (which were often sepia toned) and a few blacklight posters, but they were rare. Then with John's death and the flood of memorial magazines came an explosion of Beatles posters. The first one I remember seeing was the photo from "Beatles For Sale" LP, and it was HUGE, like 60"X40". This was also the era when you first started seeing the Parlaphone records in shops. I was the first person I knew with Parlaphone Beatles records and that was Christmas of '79. I'm not saying they weren't available, but they were just not sold in record departments of major stores like Sears, JC Penny, K-Mart until then. Maybe some big city record stores had them but they really didn't become widely available until '79-'80, and after John's death.

I read an article in late spring of 1969 about what the writer said would be the next Beatles album. Calling the album Get Back, he listed a number of song titles that I of course was excited to be reading, She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, Octopus's Garden, Dig a Pony, Don't Let Me Down, Polytheme Pam, etc. So when Abbey Road was released later the year I thought, what happened to all the other songs I read about? I distinctly remember being somewhat mystified. Later, in 1970 I came across the book version of Let It Be as shown in this video. No one else I knew had it or even knew such a slipcase book version existed until they saw my copy. The story here is fascinating and I'd almost be tempted to buy the new edition so as to read the story about how it came about. What holds me back is I've never enjoyed the album as a whole. I love some of the songs but it remains my least favorite Beatles album. But I have heard some of the Beatles conversations hashing out what they really wanted to do about playing live and do with the songs. I heard this on "Pop Goes the 60s," here on RU-vid. The conversation made it sound as if they may not have been actually trying to make a new album at the beginning of 1969, but simply wanted to film a TV show of the Beatles playing live.

BTW Michael: I forgot to mention how much I love your show! Have you read “Recording the Beetles”? it comes in a sleeve identical to a 1” master tape reel box and includes tons of pictures I’d never seen before. It details every recording session all the equipment used and how the double tracking and mix-downs were done on two 4 track recorders. It was a very expensive Christmas gift I received from a recording engineer client of mine. Peace, DrRick

I was a pro musician in South Africa in those years and I bought the Let it Be album the day it came out. British imported pressing with the book. The book, however, was titled Get Back and I knew then that Abbey Road was probably after that but released first. This proved to be correct as later news surfaced that there were various legal issues which had to be overcome due to Let it Be having been produced by Phil Spector and this led to a delay in the release of the album. To fill the gap, EMI, the British label, released an album called The Beatles with tracks such as Ballad of John and Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, Lady Madonna etc. This album came out in January 1970 and today seems something of a rarity. I still have my original Let it Be book release, Abbey Road, The White Album and The Beatles, together with another 15 or so Beatles albums which I bought in South Africa as they were released. A truly wonderful 6 or 7 years of of memories and tribute to a group that utterly redefined music and songwriting for ever !! Thank you for your input !

I think the album "The Beatles" being released on November 22. 1968 was just coincidence. The album "With The Beatles" was released on November 22, 1963. I'm always pondering how malleable time can seem depending on circumstances. Sometimes I'll ponder time in reverse. 1970 was almost 52 years ago. 1970 minus 52 is 1918. We are just far from 1970 as 1918 was. Of course time is always the same. It's circumstances that change and make it seem as though time is slower or faster. Stephen King has a wonderful short story (not horror) about the perception of time in his 1993 short story collection "Nightmares And Dreamscapes" titled "My Pretty Pony." It's only about 12 pages. It's interesting.

I bought both the vinyl boxed set and the CD boxed set. Plus, I also got several copies of the different exclusive edition and the regular LP edition. Here's what I found: The vinyl boxed set was pressed at Optimal Media in Germany. Because I suspect that Optimal uses an inferior quality of vinyl which we don't use in North America, I have found the Optimal pressing to have a rumble or excessive surface noise. Atleast all the records were centered correctly and were flat with no warps. I mention this because the "White Album", in the 2LP format, was pressed by QRP in the U.S., and I went through 4 copies and couldn't get a copy that was centered correctly and the LP2 had warps and the tone arm acted like it was on the ocean. The vinyl quality was great but the production quality was lacking. I ended up getting the boxed set, pressed by Optimal, and got flat properly centered records. Again, with the Optimal pressings, they had the excessive surface noise. The single black vinyl pressing was pressed by GZ's Precision Record Pressing in Canada and was a higher quality than I am used to with QRP pressings. It sounded great and has much less surface noise than the Optimal pressings. When the "Let It Be" album was released in the U.S. in 1970, there was a bootleg LP "Get Back To Toronto". This album was closer to the intended "Get Back" album rather than the "Let It Be" album. The "Get Back To Toronto" album used raw tape mixes and nothing had been added to them with no overdubs or noise reduction, like the Spector versions. The CD boxed set is great. The CD's were manufactured by GZ in the CZ Republic and are great. A correction about the books included with both boxed sets, although the material inside is the same, the books are NOT the same. The book in the vinyl box is larger and the covers are glossy. The book in the CD box is smaller and the covers have a matte finish. If you have the money, I recommend buying the boxed sets. For the "Let It Be" album a later audiophile version of the original mix is just fine, such as what came in the earlier stereo box. The "New" mix went by the mixing notes of the Phil Spector version, but the "New" mix is tweaked a little. The best thing about these new "Let It Be" boxes are the books that came with them. But, the fancy version of the book can be purchased separately an retails for $60. Buy the 2CD version and the book and you will save $100. and get as much Beatles as you could ever want.

The Beatles White album release date was purely mercenary! Just before Thanksgiving, Christmas season.!!! I was in the record business. It was a smart move! I think the result of the Beatles assuaging a nation was an afterthought. I was 8 in February 1964. I had actually heard the Beatles in late 1963- my older sister played them - and cried over them too!

11/22/1968 was a Friday, which was the typical day of the week for record releases back then. And about a month before Christmas, as you point on. You’re right. White Album’s release date had nothing to do w/observing JFK’s assassination.
@BlakeNaftel

Perhaps it was noted somewhere else in the comments, but 'With The Beatles' was originally released on November 22, 1963, which by unfortunate chance across the pond, was the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. As mentioned previously, the late November date was typically chosen by record companies to get new groups and singles out for the Christmas season.

It really pisses me off that they didn’t release a Sgt Pepper vinyl box set in conjunction with the cd box in 2017. They also could have included a mono vinyl version as well. When the White Album box set came out, they only included a mono version on the blue ray but no vinyl. Yet Revolver comes out with a vinyl box, complete with a mono version. Why are they being so inconsistent? I bet the Rubber Soul box will include a mono on vinyl.

If they all "got along" then why didn't any of them discredit that "myth" by publicly stating that they were indeed getting along well during the Let It Be sessions? Seems like after 50 years they are attempting to rewrite history in order to peddle their wares. Not one of them on any interview ever said "no, that's not true. we had our differences, but we all worked together to complete the project and we remained friends" or something like that. John Lennon was blasting his big mouth all through the 70s shitting on the band. Now it seems "they all loved each other"? Not even on the Anthology videos did they state this.

I wholeheartedly agree. I firmly believe it is re-writing history to show the Beatles in a more positive light. The stories also keep changing. First it was Yoko that broke up the Beatles, then it was Paul, now Paul says it was John. Also, why else would George leave the sessions if things were not going well?

I also believe the history around let it be is being rewritten, technology is now so advanced cgi can make you believe what you're viewing is historically accurate, I remember the beatles in that era at each others throats. But you have to be of a certain age , and preferably living here in the UK to fully appreciate this now narrative is not what many of us old gits remember.

so cool! Thanks for your inout insight and suggestions. and I completely agree. I want to hear those original pressings so badly, but just absolutely do not have the money for it if I could even find any. completely agree why wouldn't they? but I think they should start with Rubber Soul or Help! and do every album after. That would babe incredible.

Interestingly, Let It Be...Naked has a different run order than the original Let It Be. Where does LIB Naked fit in, Monsieur Fremer?

Great stories as always! That is wild how the demand for the original Let it Be release was so sparse.....really.... had to give them away for $5 to move inventory🤔😯 Still on the fence to purchase this one...not one of my favorites and my original German pressing seems suffice...for now at least

Another interesting and amusing review. I was curious if your original white album (shown in the video) was mono or stereo? As you are impressed with the sound quality I wondered which you preferred.

If it was the general US release, it had to be stereo, as Capitol ceased manufacturing mono starting in 1968. For many years, US fans who wanted mono White Albums had to obtain them as imports.

I cannot find a definitive answer to the question: Do these new Mono Rolling Stones & Beatles box sets require a true mono cartridge to hear at their best Or are they all 2 channel with the same mono signal coming from both sides of the V shaped groove, i'm almost certain i'd prefer that they were true mono records like the originals with one horizontally modulated signal groove. Only because some of the best sounds ive ever heard from my stereo come from my older (mostly clasical) real mono L.P.s played with my AT 33 true mono cartridge. It wasn't until i bought a true mono cartridge that i noticed this. Moving onto to 2 channel reproduction was maybe the worst set-back for L.P. reproduction(?) The Animals 1966'ish mono album "Winds of Change" was an enormous shock when i first hesrd it with my then new true mono cartridge, it excelled in sound quality, even tho the sleeve's rear tells you: "This is a mono record but it will sound far better played on a stereo cartridge & stereo system" that was an uneducated guess on somebody's part or meaningless waffle to fill an empty space, i found the polar opposite was true, it's a far, very far better sound when played with a true Mono cartridge, via one or two speakers. I prefer two speakers but if i had 1 huge Altec "Voice of the Theatre" speaker in my basenent's corner area, i may well change my mind on that one, but at their price, I'll never know. Does anyone out there know if the new Rolling Stones & Beatles Mono box sets are true mono or just 2 tracks of a mono signal done on a stereo cutter head? I especially want all the R' Stones records in true mono where possible, & some of the Beatles esp' all after & including Revolver & that other L.P. just before or after revolver i 4get now, all the way to the white album & any beyond that which were mono productions first. Except their first, i have all the Stones in stereo, sadly, All the Beatles too in stereo. Jobn Lennon apparently said "if you haven't hear 'A Day in The Life' in mono, then you haven't heard it at all" some tuber told me. I was impressed with "Paint It Black" & "Play with Fire" on mono vs stereo, mono being the clear winner, not by a nose but by several furlongs!

Mike, please do whatever you can with whatever pull you have and beg Apple or whoever to either release a Stereo all analog set as you speak of, or PLEASE do another run of the analog Mono box. I missed out on the 2014 Mono run (have an early Blue Box Stereo UK) and with my health not going to allow me live long enough to see re release of it, if they ever do. I'd happily pay well for either. I do have both new LIB sets and love them so much. Thanks for sharing your stories, they are great!

Here is a slight correction .. early in the video he states "The First Time People Had Heard Of The Beatles was when they were on Ed Sullivan. " That is wrong. It was the first time most people saw the Beatles. They had I believe several #1 hits before they got here.. esp She Loves You ..

probably said it too many times are a result of any earlier drinking game! Actually it's an unconscious "filler" not as good as a silent pause, but better than "uh", or "um". At any rate, on to the next comment....I'll try to remember to not say again "at any rate"!

Dear Michael, loved the video, so good to have such a great sounding vinyl boxset, after all the poor sounding bootlegs! Just one point, the title Get Back has nothing to do with 'geting back to playing live' it has a much darker meaning, if you heard the Black Album you would know what Get Back is actually referring too. I'd happily write an article about it, if you are interested.
