Dwight Frye was an extremely versatile actor in the 1930s and 40s. Frye found success early in his Hollywood career but after playing iconic roles such as the hunchbacked villain Fritz from Frankenstein and the crazy inmate Renfield from Dracula, Frye found himself typecast as similar types of characters. He wanted to break away from this typecast to get a variety of different roles but his career was cut short when Frye unexpectedly died of a heart attack at 44yrs old. Frye's career was short but his performances are immortalized and will live on forever.

Definitely. If you could choose a modern day actor similar to Frye, who would you pick? I'd say Joaquin Phoenix

Spoiler: He’s not. Dwight had one son who unfortunately never had any children of his own. He died in 2003.

One thing I’d like to point out, his mother was not “a scientist and a practicing Christian”. She was a practicing Christian Scientist, as in she followed the doctrine of Christian Science which was started by Mary Baker Eddy.

Cooper's, The Ballad of Dwight Frye captures the madness perfectly. Sung in a first person expression of a madman, not understanding his own violent behavior.

Dwight Frye was the best thing in Dracula, His red mist speech is so compelling and his laugh is very creepy. He's a stupid sadist in Frankenstein, blundering the brain errand and torturing the creature. He richly deserved to get hanged. The scream he utters as the creature is killing him is unforgettable.

Dwight Frye is a one of my favourite performers and arguably more importantly, unlike most of his colleagues, he remained faithful to his only one love/wife Laura Mae - which I commend tremendously. As for “Dracula” (1931), there are three solid actors in the film, Bela Lugosi, Edward van Sloan, and of course Dwight Frye. He was more than a horror actor.

@8:39 YOU ARE GOOD, didn't think there was a chance in hell the Alice record would come up. Check the song Desperado, it's about movie characters played by Lee Van Cleef Back in 71 or 72 Alice Cooper had a great song called Ballad of Dwight Frye, guessing this is where the name came from. The character in the song is in a mental asylum someplace missing his kid, he escapes, now even more disturbed. At the end it runs straight into a upbeat almost folk song called Sun Arise. The whole side of the Love It To Death album has a theme
