I immersed myself in hours and hours of Deep Purple for years. I would place 5-6 albums on the record player and they would play, drop play drop and then I would turn the entire stack upside down and play through them all again. Jon Lord's playing was a huge part of my life and inspiration to want to form America's version of Deep Purple. I never got there but I was involved early on in Heavy Metal long before it became mainstream starting in 1975. Ritchie was my hero and I ended up with 4 Marshall full stacks by the time I was finished. Marshalls make all the difference. I first saw Deep purple in 1972 about a month or two before they headed to Japan. I remember the stacks of Marshalls on the stage and the roar inside the coliseum. He was the greatest and his playing will last as long as the world lasts.

There's a pre-set button on my Hammond called 'Purple' and clearly tries to replicate Jon Lord's industrial sound. That's some recognition of his contribution to the world of organ music. Great tribute by the way.

@@ray8304I know what you mean, I bought Steve Walsh's old C-3, and though I've thought about selling it, I'm sure I'd regret it immediately. There's no sound like a Hammond tonewheel running through a Leslie. BTW, my comment wasn't meant to be pissy, and I hope you didn't take it that way. ☮🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹✌

@@davidmccall4776 as a follow up to that conversation I’m sure you know that when you overdrive the standard set up with the volume pedal it already has that unmistakable growl, so he took it one step further when they adapted the Marshalls to keep up with Blackmore’s guitar sound. Very cool indeed 👍

Deep Purple live in Sydney circa 1975..!!.at Hordern PAVILLION. The band walks on stage and starts to tune up..!!...I'm standing front row left of stage directly in front of Glover...!!..his bass went right through me, I could feel my internal organs shaking...unbelievable volume...Never felt that before or since....Now at Jon's feet, during "Speed King"..he notices me getting hammered against the stage, and after the song, tosses me a full can of coke with a wink..!!..I opened it and it sprayed everywhere, but tasted great. Must have been a generous guy, as he could see this 17 year old was in trouble...!!..I'll never forget the way he hammered his organ, made it squeal.....unforgettable.....Love you Jon Lord....thanks for the drink, and the memory....I am 66 now...!!

Out of innumerable live recordings featuring Jon Lord’s talents (there’s so many to pick from), the live version of “Black Night” recorded in August 1972 - and which was included as a “bonus track” on some re-issues of “Made in Japan” - would be one of my favs as an illustration of Lord’s “hard rock” organ style. In fact the whole band are “on fire” (as with all of the August 1972 Japan tour). The great thing about “Black Night” is that those not enamoured of extended soloing (they don’t know what they’re missing imo) will have an absolute distillation of the brilliant talents of Jon Lord and colleagues !

The very first album I ever bought with my own money which Deep Purple machine headband it’s been my favorite band ever since.. I even got to meet the entire band down in Orlando in the early 90s when they were recording an album in Altamonte Springs the band happened to be hanging out at spirit sports bar in Altamonte Springs Florida.. I was throwing darts with John Lord got to meet Richie Blackmore, but John Lord was really cool. He sat with us for about four hours. I kept buying him drinks told me stories about the band on the road in the early days where he lived his kids what a great guy he was…. The best rockstar experience I’ve ever had. They were really cool people. Nobody was a prick…

Funny. I used to have the LP of 'Made In Japan' in the 70's which I promptly wore out and discarded. Found a CD of the same in the 2k's and turned up missing after I moved to Texas. This year, I ordered the Japanese CD which is renamed 'Live In Japan' but still the same tour. Much more info including a lyric sheet as well. God Bless you Japan!

How much of a waste is the rock and roll hall of fame? Deep Purple not getting in until 2016 is a crime. But they put some rappers in there before them, so it's all good, right? What a scam that place is. It's just a clique of jerks, deciding who gets in. Deep Purple was my first concert in 1987. I was blown away. Such a great performance for a first show. Not many bands I saw after that could live up to their high standards. Jon was amazing.
