I graduated 4 years ago from the apprenticeship. This definitely wasn't my dream job growing up it just kind of presented itself through my lady's brother. It's been tough physical work that's taken alot of my time up. But I can comfortably take care of my kids and lady while owning a house, car and not worrying about money in general. The hardest part for me is just how much time I spend at work compared to my home life.

My brother is an iron worker. He makes better money than most of my siblings. His union protects him and his job is secure. I hope the same for you. Life is tough for many people and we all have our struggles within our jobs and personal lives. Keep striving! I hope your dreams of having a family have already come true or that you're happy one way or the other.

Man ironworkers will always be in demand. The trades will always be in demand unlike a fashion designer or a gender studies degree
@stab2486
@stab2486 6 лет назад
Cristian Munoz I don't know why people keep spouting dumb crap like this, as if the only alternative to a trade is something useless like gender studies or whatever. If you have the time to complete a four year apprenticeship, you'd be better off spending those four years getting a bachelors degree, becoming an RN, lab med tech, doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc.
@a.j.gandenberger6044
@a.j.gandenberger6044 5 лет назад
That's just dumb. "If you have time to do a 4 year apprenticeship, you might as well go to college." Lol. Apprenticeship is free (minus a couple hundred dollars, plus tooling) You're paid to learn, instead of paying to learn. Pension, annuity, healthcare, all paid for by the contractor. No robot to take your place. Don't get me wrong, college is a useful tool, and if you're interested in nursing, engineering, architecture, etc.. go to college. But if you're not interested in college and you want a steady career with good pay and great benefits, join a trade union. You're only wasting your time if you are just working cause you have to. If you're doing what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.

It's not a struggle when you are trained properly and use your head. I had an excellent training program and brothers in my union take the time to teach me so much every day. I'm seeing progress quickly and am stoked to come in every day and practice my new skills. I make damn good money for an apprentice, have a pension plan, benefits, and work out here is booming. You need drive and to be both mentally and physically fit to succeed in this trade, as there are so many aspects to it. Highly skilled professionals make up my union and this video does not paint an accurate picture of what being an ironworker apprentice is really about. Going to school and joining this trade has changed my life. I am proud to be an ironworker. Local 97 Vancouver, BC

steel jobs are not automated in any way shape or form. We get up there and get our hands dirty connecting, rigging, and welding every single day. how are you gonna sit there and act like technology is putting people out of the job? the truth is there are a lot of trade jobs, not just ironworking, that have empty positions because people around my age group tend to go to college where they go heavily into debt and most of them don't even have a degree to show for it, or worse a gender studies or liberal arts degree. You can easily buy yourself a cheap welding machine, some 7018 rods, and get some scrap steel and start practicing how to weld. many people i work with started welding between 14 and 16 years old. Trade schools are an option as well and cost a lot less than college.

Apprentices listen up. Your reputation will always follow you in the ironworkers. So, be on time, don't drink during lunch, and if you run into something you don't understand, ask questions. You're an apprentice and you're not suppose to know everything. Watch, listen and learn. Show the journeyman some respect and always have the right tools for the job. R D local 25 Detroit retired

The union has a great pension along with a retirement fund separate from the pension and first term apprentices start at like $22 or $23 an hour. Im strongly considering applying.
