He wasn't ashamed of himself. He just realized that he held the power of taking life with one touch of his hand. And it's not that he wanted that power, in fact you could see that he struggled with it, but it was his task and he understood it and knew what it meant. In the end, he reluctantly gave rest to his best friend, and felt the grief of it. I think if I had to think of it in a spiritual sense I could imagine G-d loving us just as death loved the little deer. But like death, G-d realizes that He must deliver us to our death. Though it hurts, he does it. But it doesn't mean He doesn't love us. It's simply our time.

Obviously because loved ones are no longer with us, but we choose to look at our own loss and rather than celebrate the life they’ve lived and moved on from, and rarely look at it as peaceful end to pain. Almost seems self-centred and egocentric, really. I like Neil Gaiman’s Death as portrayed in the Sandman comics; young, pretty, friendly, intelligent, warm, and reassuring rather than a dark and foreboding being. If you’ve never read it, I highly recommend the series.

I see what you mean but I have to say as a pet owner this also made me sob terribly. Something about the nonverbal communication between the two characters really struck home and reminded me of the relationship I have with my dog. I love him so much. He's my little buddy.
