The Life of Giordano Bruno

Vacillating, intriguing, and tragic; if I were to ascribe three words to the life of Giordano Bruno it would undoubtedly be these. I suspect many know of this stories fiery denouement, but if you are interesting in discovering how Giordano Bruno, searching and wondering, transformed from priest to philosophical martyr for free speech and tolerance of differences then give me 10 minutes of your time.
If you enjoyed this video and are interesting in learning more about history’s greatest philosophic minds and ideas consider subscribing to the channel. Here my goal is to bring philosophy to whoever may be seeking it by illuminating the individuals who, by the prestidigitation of their thought, changed the world.

Bruno's joke about Solomon was to use the church's own logic against them. It was demonstration of questioning authority with authority's own logic. In doing so, he highlighted authority's own hypocrisy. Authority's reaction to his proof of it's hypocrisy demonstrates their desire for power and not the truth.

I always wondered about Solomon and his 800 wives, whether or not he was commanded to do that by G_d, because it sure doesn't seem like the actions of a sane person, much less a wise person.

I am from Australia and found out about him while reading about what happened to the Adyar Bookshop in Sydney which was opened by The Theosophical Society and..they also started Sydney's radio station 2GB and the GB came from his name Giordano Bruno..fascinating! He was a genuine intellectual and died because of it. He may have not been a scientist but the "myth" isn't far off. He also supported copernicus ' theory and made claims like there being explanets and a center in the universe. You are right tho he was mainly a philosopher and died because he supported hermeticism.

interesting that he did no science, proposed no theories, and no scientific experiment was done - yet he is so often remembered as a 'martyr to science' along with Galileo
@LetsTalkPhilosophy
@LetsTalkPhilosophy 2 года назад
I think the confusion comes because he was indeed a martyr for free thought which, incidentally, during that age aided in convincing those who had theories contrary to popular dogmas to not be afraid, to stand fast to what they thought to be true, even if it means your life. Though there are a few ways of interpreting what he stood for. Cheers for taking the time to watch the entire video, I hope it was helpful and or informative!

I don’t know what you mean here. Giordano Bruno’s cosmological theories are a branch of physics and metaphysics. He proposed the existence of exoplanets (the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets) and the ‘infinite’ universe theory. Despite this, it’s his religious views and not his cosmological views that got him in trouble.
@MyMy-tv7fd
@MyMy-tv7fd 4 месяца назад
I thank you for your comment, but he had no empirical basis for his proposed exoplanets or infinite universe, it was pure speculation - along the lines of Democritus' speculation about 'atoms' in 400BC @@thenablade858

I have taken much inspiration from a few channels in regards to editing my videos; from there I simply try to add what I enjoy or what I think will draw the viewer to continue watching. It can be difficult with virtually no budget to work with, but I am always trying to improve and adapt my videos to make each better than the last. Sometimes it works, other times it backfires; but I always learn something. This channel is the first time I've ever done any video editing. As for the narration I do the research and put together what I feel to be a comprehensive, but easily understandable guide to whichever individual or idea I am presenting. However, those who are kind, generous, and thankful far outweigh the former which I spoke of. I would be thrilled to be able to converse with one of those people through email; go to my profile page and click on the about section, there should be an area where you can see one of my emails. When I hear people getting upset about reclassifying Pluto, I like to refer them to Giordano Bruno, who was sentenced to death in part for declaring that our sun was a star, like the thousands of other stars in the sky, but closer. Unlike religious dogma, science is and must be willing to shift its perspective. It's not meant to insult anyone or anything; it is merely an attempt to reveal truth. Science that is unable to change inevitably becomes dogma.

It is a surprise to learn that Giordano Bruno did not believe that the Eucharist was the literal body of Christ. That certainly would have brought him before the Inquisition. Q: Do you believe the sacred host is actually Jesus? And that you eat him at Communion?

In the video, you said that Bruno was "tongue bound". Does that mean that they nailed his tongue to the cross. And was he not crucified upside-down and then burnt to death? How cruel.
@LetsTalkPhilosophy

By tongue bound I simply meant he was not able to speak, so gagged in some way. Also I am not exactly sure whether he was upside down or right side up during the execution. Thanks for watching!

@@LetsTalkPhilosophy - According to Paul Wallis, an Anglican Minister, Bruno suffered a lot and was tortured. He discusses Bruno in this video starting at time = 7:36 if you are interested. He says that he was in prison for 7 years, in hardship, then had his tongue nailed to the cross, then had his tongue cut off, then turned upside down and burnt to death. There was a cover up and even his death by the Catholics was denied until more recently. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VYTSk_r91Xk.html

I attempted to translate this into English, this is what I got: (In the human being, whose system is love for one's neighbor in negation of the carnal affective instinct, from which one should not draw in order not to perish (Genesis 2.17), unlike the animal kingdom whose guiding system is instead the affective instinct, the vigil (the spirit) in the absence of sleep, which emerges in the human frontal lobe (in which the Temple of God is identifiable), realizing life in spirit (eternal ), is magnetically separated at the Pineal (in the fissure of Silvio and Rolando) from the rest of the animal brain immersed at various levels in sleep/wakefulness even when the subject is awake. It follows that every good for the human being derives from wakefulness (in the absence of sleep), while the bad malaise proceeds from sleep especially when in the daytime hours it encroaches on the frontal lobe) Let me know if this is what you meant to say, if so I am very confused without context.
@lorenzomarini5112
@lorenzomarini5112 Год назад

Not one word about how Bruno said that each star is in fact a Sun with planets orbiting them and that they may well have life on them also. He also insisted that the Universe is infinite and that it has no center. He didn’t believe in the Divinity of Christ or that Mary was a virgin. In other words he was highly intelligent, not naive and stupid. It’s always been my understanding that this is what got him killed. It went against the teachings of the catholic church. Galileo was in the crowd and witnessed Bruno being burned alive and this is why he recanted. He didn’t want to die like that. Surprising that you make no mention of this.

Hey John, I understand your concerns, but this video, as was stated in the title, was about the life of Bruno. I am making a separate video on his beliefs regarding philosophy, cosmology, the occult, and religion which I hope to be releasing after my next video on Thales. I think, perhaps, to get rid of superstition would be more obtainable. In my opinion I think there is a reason that religion has been and still remains prevalent. I think the best we can ask for is the thorough education of humanity, whichever an individual chooses to believe after that point is outside of our control. From my personal experience and from witnessing humanity in a larger perspective, religion will remain an integral part of our races heritage, no matter where we go in the future, for better or for worse.
