Being poor does not mean you have to be dirty and disorganized or disorderly. I know alot of people who dont have money, but they still sweep and clean. I lived around the Tianhe area and walked in streets like this, except definitely less tidy. That was before the pandemic and I can say it is interesting place to stay and learn about how other people live.

In China, if you are poor, you still have a place to live, a job, and food to meet your basic needs for food, clothing, housing, and transportation. The poverty in India is homelessness, lack of three meals, let alone other life needs.

where is the life of the poor here. didnt see anything. they just live a simple life, but poor I cant see it here. My inlaws live also in Guangzhou, similar home somewhere in Xiue Xiue district. Yes, houses from the 50s/60s. But, they are pensioners already, and receive from the government a total of CNY 12,000. Which is similar as my mother receives in the Netherlands as pension. Wow. I used to live in southeast Guangzhou, where I had my own lighting company with a Chinese partner. I lived in the Tianhe district several miles south of the computer store, University and downtown. My apartment complex was modern and really nice, but our shop where we built lights was in a section to the east of there, towards the train tracks, that was exactly like this. The maze through the tower blocks of apartments always reminded me of Blade Runner. I was amazed that it was like walking from microcosm to microcosm of extremely dense neighborhoods, all scrunched together, each with its own unique features and people. Eventually, after walking to and from work through these mazes, I actually began to know my way around. I began recognizing people from area to area as I navigated the narrow alleys. At first, it was a bit creepy, being so unaccustomed to such a strange scenario. But, I learned where the good street food was ... where the best markets with the freshest food were, where to get a haircut, buy cellular minutes, etc. Being the big westerner (6-foot, 275 pounds) that walked through nearly every day, standing out like a sore thumb, I got a lot of odd stares and heard a lot of "Whaaaaaa!"s as I walked by. But, people eventually started smiling and saying "Hello" to me. I was accepted as belonging there, and they definitely made it known to me. The sights, sounds and smells of that adventure in my life will be with me forever. Thanks for this, you just let me relive a walk to work!

Sounds like a wonderful adventure that left you with a wealth of fond memories! This video reminded me of some atmospheric alleys I had explored in Bangkok, Hanoi and Kyoto, though more narrow. One particular alley on the fringes of Bangkok’s Chinatown appeared to be a Little India in miniature, with Indian shops and predominantly Indians encountered, with the alley becoming more narrow and dim the further I walked. I had made one solo trip to Japan and seven trips covering seven countries in SE Asia, but have yet to make it to China and hope to visit it someday. Cheers!
@ThatRascalMerlin
@ThatRascalMerlin Год назад
@@scottmcintire8634 Funny, my current bucket list is Vietnam, Tokyo, and Pattiya! If you get to China, I recommend hanging on the Kowloon side while waiting on your entry visa (usually next day), as Kowloon has some really great bars, pubs, and shopping. Then I recommend Guangzhou, Shenzen, and Shanghai to visit. Beijing is ok, but has really bad air quality and is a bit more expensive. Happy travels!

@ThatRascalMerlin Год назад
@Keyboard Emperor I lived on the top floor of a 16-floor building in my complex. It wasn't a fancy penthouse or anything, as all the apartments were the same from floor to floor. I just happened to get one that was available on the top floor. We had all types of shops under our buildings, just like the local neighborhoods. From laundry and dry cleaners to grocery stores, a meat/seafood market, a convenience store with beer, snacks, and ciggies, and even a barbershop. I'd say that my one-bedroom apt. was about 500 square feet or so. And the shower had EIGHT heads! It was really nice! My rent was a paltry $390 USD a month! And it was completely furnished! I made friends with the guards that looked after our complex and they looked the other way when I brought home girls from the pubs on weekends. As you likely know, this is actually a no-no in China! (In fact, the very first rule on my lease was that I had no "guests".) They would even get on the radio and wrangle them cabs from the front gate and send them to my building (which was in the very back of my complex), to send them home. I really loved living there in that complex. And, aside from my business partner turning on me after the company was successfully up and running (which every ex-pat I met there warned me he would eventually do), the experience is one of the fondest I have. I loved living in China.

In China, this is called: Village in the City!!! Most of the people living here are migrant workers from other provinces. Because the rent here is very cheap, I like this kind of place very much, because it is very lively, and you can find everything you want to eat here. Although it is very poor, it is very clean, and everyone is very friendly and helps each other. Also, not all of them are poor, many of the landlords or locals are very rich. Although it is very shabby here, the housing prices are unimaginable!!! Haha

My only experience with Guangzhou was spending several days there with a girlfriend. I didn't know that chicken feet are a favourite food in Guangdong. I found the flavour excellent but, like most Westerners, I thought there were too many bones to enjoy the dish. I also climbed Mount Bayun. When we summited, I was surprised to see oldsters singing traditional Chinese folk songs next to a hillside where screaming people in giant wire round cages bounded down the slope and an entire bamboo bunji jump was working at full capacity. One of the rural delights I experienced was in Qingshan fishing village. Before tourism, the men of Qingshan where we were told that until recently were too poor to marry, were actively engaged in human husbandry. An interesting sideline is we were fed two ocean vegetables that didn't grow anywhere else on Earth. Qingshan is on the West slope of Mount Lao, China's tallest coastal mountain just east of Qingdao.

When he got close enough he hit the man in the back of the head with a brick. Apparently the other guy had stolen his wallet and he wanted it back. I live since many years in Panyu district. This video was filmed in a village in Huangpu district if I read the street signs correctly :) Surprisingly not many people wearing a mask, it is understandable then why the situation with the latest outbreak is as severe as never before in the past 3 years... Generally can not say they are all poor, especially the house owners. The land in this area has quite high value now. I also experienced shop owners of messy looking shops, but living somewhere in nice and high price areas at top floor big apartments.

it is amazing how clean everything is in China honestly. You would think everything being crammed together it would be dirty but for the most part it isn't. When traveling with my wife and her sister there I was stunned to see how clean the road sides were vs here in the US. There were large teams of people traveling between the cities living off the land cleaning up the trash, trimming the trees and such. In the cities there were large groups sweeping the sidewalks to the street gutter where a waiting street sweeper was to clean up the trash. The poor area my younger sister-in-law lived in was only what I would call dirty due to the construction there from renovating buildings and fixing the streets.
