Thank you to all the South Africans who were interviewed by Mikael Colville-Anderse. I am so grateful for all the hard work that you are doing in Cape Town. God bless you and keep you safe. Much aroha from Aotearoa.
As a South African, civil engineer and a new Capetonian, I was anxious to watch this video. I have loved every video you've posted. But I know the challenges cape town faces. We experience them in our work everyday. It's hard to watch the many RU-vidrs videos about RSA and how we are "doomed" without the context or an understanding of who South Africans are and how we are changing and adapting to our new reality. This video was spot on. I believe you missed some of the national context of South Africa and cape towns unique space within it, and, overplayed apartheids role in the creation of informal townships (although apartheifld created the framework, it has a lot to do with post apartheid migration). Thank you for visiting our beautiful city ❤. We will prosper, but we have a lot of work to do!
Thanks for the comment. It is, of course, tricky to squeeze in national context in a series about a city, but I get your point. Cape Town was one of the most powerful experiences I had filming these four seasons of the series.
You neglect to mention the fact that the ANC has ruled South Africa for 30 years (since the end of Apartheid) and has had enough time and money to make meaningful change. They have failed dismally - all over South Africa.
This documentary is on Cape Town yes? The jewel in DA’s crown? Over 400 informal townships mostly housing black people? A teeny teeny bit of denialism in your breakfast tea?
Love your vids, just started this one, the line "is urbanism being used as an effective tool for urban change" is exemplary for the questions your videos have made me ask about the city around me. At least reached 1 person!!
Let’s talk about the ripple effects. The high crime rate - gangsterism or mafia style run townships, poor management of immigrants and illegal foreigners, the high unemployment rate, the province next to CT, the Eastern Cape with almost 50% unemployment…. Fix those issues and townships will reduce drastically.
I shudder at the thought of what Cape Town, or even the country would look like if/when All the " stolen land " is " returned " . It probably Won't look good afterwards.
