I totally agree. This was his best performance.

He WAS Thomas Wake. Quite astounding how relaxed and normal he comes across in interviews. One would expect him to be quite crazy himself.

I was shocked at the way it made dark scenes look. The way the background of the screen kind of fades into the background of the aspect ratio made the darkness seem even huger.

There is also at least one documented case of the entire three man crew of a lighthouse disappearing without a trace in 1900 off the coast of Scotland. And to this day no theory about what happened to them has been completely accepted

I once heard that the very heavy fresnel lens was afloat in mercury to minimize friction so it would turn more easily. The keepers breathed in the fumes which again would affect the brain. Add to that long lonely shifts on some godforsaken rock, and there you go.

Just from the RU-vid title it seems that they don't hate it ^^ It's a great movie in my opinion like all of Robert Eggers movies. Can't wait for his version of Nosferatu

It's a piece of garbage. One of the worst films I've seen in the last 20 years. There is one short scene worth watching. That's it.

Anybody can like or dislike whatever he wants. But many people called me names just for stating that i liked the movie very much. They even got angry because they cant fathom someone liking something they hated. People are weird sometimes.

Takes place in 1890's, back then paraffin oil was the most popular, though not the only kind used.

Kinski was very different and actually creepy because he was actually more like an animal than human. The rest of the film seemed quite patchy and low budget to me. The photography was inconistent not really top of the line. Maybe that's 1970s German cinema (it's not Hollywood after all).

Isn't that the movie where he has a full frontal scene but had to bring in a stand in penis because Willem's is apparently unnaturally huge to the point where it was just TOO distracting 😂

Pretty sure Willem just tanked actual dirt. He's dedicated to authentic craft

I think they are the same person, which is why it's revealed that they have the same name. My guess is that the island and the lighthouse are a metaphor for any one person's soul, meaning their interior psychological reality. No person can truly know anybody else, so we really are like islands. Arguably we can't even truly know ourselves, because every person's psyche is split into conflicting and antagonistic drives. That's what I think the two characters are. The light in the lighthouse is a symbol for the rational faculty of mind. To possess it would be to have control of the soul, psyche, or consciousness. The older version Thomas represents the super ego, or rational part of the psyche, while the younger version of Thomas represents the id, or baser instinctual part of us that is furthest from reason. We often know what is right or good, but we'll have desires which convince us to ignore this knowledge, so people are often at war with themselves, with different conflicting aspects of the psyche fighting for control, and the rational part of the mind tries to discipline the baser instincts. I think that's what it's about. If you think of it as a symbolic representation of a single person's psyche and its conflicting parts, the weirder aspects of the movie start to come into focus and make a lot more sense. This interpretation fits if you're familiar with Plato's tripartite soul. It would also explain the Prometheus reference, which Plato also references in his explanation of how the "soul" or consciousness is composed. This could be a stretch though because it's an open question as to if Eggers himself is familiar with the details of that theory. Not a lot of people are who didn't study it. I could be just reading it into the film where it doesn't exist. It could also be that the older man is what Plato refers to as the "spirited" part of the soul, and the younger man is the "appetitive" part, with the light being a symbol for the rational faculty of mind that both want control over.
