The Matoran have always been fascinated by the sky above them, and on the Islands of Mata Nui and Voya Nui they had the full beauty of the natural universe to gaze upon.
Strange then, that they didn't seem to notice the desert and jungle worlds that were right next door. Why is that?
In this investigation, we look at the limits of Matoran Astronomy and try to figure out why they seemed to be completely unaware of Bara Magna and Bota Magna's existence.

It's funny that you already got the answer to your question and forgot it. So, you made a whole video about it and rediscovered that Greg answered your question years ago.

Prediction: They were facing the "wrong direction" due to tidal locking Answer: Really interesting deep dive!

With all the information collected in this and your past videos, we can pinpoint the location of each island on Aqua Magna even more. All that's left is to discover if the Mata Nui robot landed on the north or south side of the equator. With how big it is, it's also possible that the Mata Nui robot could have landed in a way in which the island of Mata Nui is on one side of the equator while Voya Nui is on the other. Sadly, I don't think we have enough information on both Voya Nui and Mahri Nui to answer that question... Maybe the ocean current could advise us on that, but Aqua Magna doesn't have continent like earth and we don't know if the south and north pole have polar ice like us that create the up/down motion of the current on earth. So, we will have to use another strategy. I hope you find some information that could be useful.

Regarding the great sundial, it's possible that the number of hours remained consistent between cultures while the length of a single hour changed. After all, the sundial itself would show 18 even partitions of a day no matter the length of said day.

That's true, the evidence could definitely be interpreted either way. But if I did it that way, I wouldn't get to talk about synchronous orbits, so I chose to interpret it this way ;)

That is hilarious Thanks for the explanation, though TBH I really like the inclusion of Spherus Magna in the Masks of Power game, it just looks super-awesome.

I get so giddy when you upload. I love nerdy deep dives and i love worldbuilding so this is just always a delight. If you're looking for ideas i've always felt like the "sand + fire makes glass" fight move in MoL was so unrealistic lol.. Or is it? (vsauce music plays)

Here’s something you made me wonder: could someone wearing the Kanohi Kakama outrun a Nova Blast explosion?

Yeah, the tidal locking explanation is the only one that really makes sense, to the degree that I'd say it's essentially canon. On the point of BM's day length being different to SM's: I had to think of the classic example of the ice skater spinning faster when they tuck in their arms and slowing down again when they extend them. The situation of the Shattering isn't too different if you think about it: a central mass with two smaller masses moving away from it. Makes sense then that BM would slow down in it's rotation somewhat, though the difference being of course that the three bodies are not connected anymore post-Shattering the way that an ice skater is with their arms. Which raises the question: If the two moons were just pushed upwards by the force of the EP reaction, why wouldn't they just fall back down in a (mostly) straight line? Where does the orbital angular momentum come from? I've played KSP, I know you need to accelerate tangentially to achieve orbit! ^^' There's probably some EP magic going on there, but I'd love to know if the pre- and post-Shattering situations can be made to be mathematically consistent if you apply conservations of energy and angular momentum. Might even give some insights in just how much the rotation periods changed, or lets one quantify just how much energy the EP reaction dumped into the whole system?

@theknowledgetower208 Месяц назад
Yeah, that's definitely something I thought about when making this video. To do it properly though, I'd need to know things like the masses of each body, which would likely be several investigations in and of themselves. One to come back to in the future though.

Interesting. Love these deep dives. Bit confused about the end though. So are you saying that neither point discussed in this video is possible due to the Shattering desynchronizing their orbits? Desynchronization sounds like it would definitely appear to move more from a fixed point on the planet. Does that mean the mystery remains unsolved of why we never see it in the sky? Or did I misunderstand
@theknowledgetower208
@theknowledgetower208 Месяц назад
Ah, sorry for the confusion. So just like our moon, Aqua Magna is tidally locked, meaning that it's spin and it's orbit are synced - that is not in dispute. It has to be this way in order for the Matoran to have never seen the other worlds in their sky. What I was discussing with that end point was additional to this. That question was whether Aqua Magna was also synchronous with the spin on Bara Magna. If it were, then it would either appear to never move across the sky or move up and down in a figure of 8, rather than rising and setting like you would expect. I concluded that due to the shattering it probably wasn't, so it would still rise and set from the perspective of an observer from Bara Magna. But that is independent from the tidal locking, so it would still only ever show one side towards the planet and the side with the Matoran on it would always face away. It's basically just like our moon. It's tidally locked to Earth and so only ever shows one side to us, but it's orbit is not synchronous with the spin of the Earth, so it doesn't have one of those stranger orbits described in the video. Hope that makes sense.

@@theknowledgetower208 This could be true, but if Protodermis can carefully set the orbit of Aqua Magna, surely it can also fix any issues with Bara Magna after the Shattering?
@theknowledgetower208
@theknowledgetower208 Месяц назад
Oh it definitely could, but I try to keep "Energised Protodermis is magic and can do anything" out of my videos unless it is absolutely necessary. In the case of Aqua Magna it was needed to reduce the millions of years for the tidal locking to occur naturally to fit the timescale we have, but for the spin of Bara Magna it wasn't required. So I prefer to stick to just the science there

Tidal locking on a water world? Actually, are tides mentioned at any point in the Bionicle books or lore?
@theknowledgetower208
@theknowledgetower208 Месяц назад
Id have to look it up again to be 100% certain, but I remember the tides being mentioned during a conversation between Nokama and Gali Nuva in the Chronicles 4 book. Plus, it would make sense for it to have tides. While it is tidally locked to Bara Magna, Bota Manga and Aqua Magna's own small moon would still have their own gravitational influences to cause tides on the endless ocean.
