The Link Between Japanese Samurai and Real Indigo

Great Big Story

Real indigo-dyed clothing is not like the blue you know. Richer than the chemical blues used on most fabrics today, real indigo dye comes from a plant and has a surprising range of qualities: on fabric it is antibacterial, flame resistant and repels odor and dirt. With roots in Japanese culture dating back to the 1600s, indigo-dyed fabrics were worn under the armor of samurais to help keep bacteria from wounds. Today, five farmers keep the tradition of growing indigo alive in Tokushima, Japan.

This colour is common in the lacing for Samurai armour, as it's believed to represent both good luck and victory; two things Samurai hope for in battle. I believe (if I am wrong someone please correct me) the Uesugi clan under Kenshin dyed their banners Indigo, which proved appropriate as Kenshin won most battles.

Don't eat your food with Himalayan sodium chloride, stop using your SiO2 and silicon devices doped with germanium arsenide, indium and tin. Don't take ascorbic acid from your organic orange juice. Don't take acetyl salicylic acid when you have a headache. And don't use 2,2'-bis(2,3-dihydro-3-oxoindolyliden) as a dye for your blue jeans naturally occurring or synthetic that is.

'The Appeal to Nature' is a very common logical fallacy. And it's easy to abuse it to sell a product. People will continue to do this, no matter how many complaints result, since it sells a product. This product can be a plant-based dye, or it could be a video that generates ad revenue. Their word choice was made deliberately, not out of ignorance.

Lovely color. I wish you've shown which ones are the ones which aged beautifully, like that dye-person said. So that we can see the comparison of the freshly-inked cloth to the aged cloth. Also, why not do a series for coloring clothing? For example, violet, which was hard to obtain before, and like this vid on indigo, find out how the practitioners/farmers still fare.

Indigo is one of the oldest plant dyes in existence, first brought to Japan approximately 1400 years ago. This is another example of how Japan is a very good student and although Indigo was not originated in Japan, through hard work the Japanese slowly took over the mastery of it and is now marketing and capitalizing over the world - e.g. Japanese denim & Jeans.
