Dover High School students and members of the steel drum band performed this classic in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center at Kent State University Tuscarawas under the direction of Joan Wenzel.
It's so nice to see people from another culture playing your nations musical instruments. It gives you a sense of pride and appreciation. And even tho I've been abroad for over three decades, I still stop in my tracks every time to listen when I hear steel pan. I guess it's in my blood. That was very enjoyable. Well done kids.
Im glad that everyone enjoyed this performance! I am in this steel band and Dover has a great music program with excellent teachers. Especially Miss Wenzel who taught me how to play the drums in 5th grade. She is one of the best educators a person could ask for!
Never fails to amaze me what the human brain can produce music from virtually anything, ,from hollow reeds different lengths, to 50 gallon oil drums, which to me have the best of sounds
These instruments was invented and originated in TRINIDAD and TOBAGO. The only instrument invented in the 20th century. The originals was made from oil drums and still are made this way in my country...TRINIDAD and TOBAGO.
As a 1967 grad. I'm happy to see Dover continuing to support the music education. Some of my most fond memories are from the Dover High School music department and the instructors!
These kids are all grown up now. I'm listening 11 years after this was posted. I love the steel drums and this performance was fantastic, I hope these young people carried in and developed their talents further, they deserve lots of success in their lives.😀👍
Something you may never see again in you're life time 40 kids and not one computer or Xbox between them. "BRILLIANT " well done kids you're parents must have been proud of you.
I grew up in South Dakota but lived in Trinidad for a couple of years back in the 1980's. Still have very fond memories of going to the upside down Hilton on Friday night to listen to the pan band, hearing the pan yard at night up the street in Petit Valley leading up to Carnival, and of course all of the great bands, large and small, during the Carnival. This brings all of the great memories back to me. Great job kids.
Pleasant comments coming from people of Trinidad and Tobago. Continue being proud of this steel drum cultural heritage. (I read 'Caribbean' authored by James Michener some two years ago....was touched deeply by the sad history forced onto local Caribbean people, by mostly westerners.
That really was OUTSTANDING,I once saw a steel band in Manchester with all children participants,I couldn’t believe how good they were as the eldest was only about 12,it’s great to see and hear these talented youngsters,it was a Privilege.
It's nice to see and hear people from another country playing my country instrument it's not for playing carnival music you can play classic music too I am proud to be from the country that inventory pan Trinidad and Tobago
Amazing how timeless some performances can be. Just watching this, and thinking that everyone who played is no longer a child - if they went straight on to college, every one of them would have graduated by now. I wonder what it feels like for them to look back on this and realize they've had more than 5 million views.
@@DestroylonIey I am at our schools steel drum band ( I go to the school that plays in this) and they mentioned it and I was like holy crap that’s sick
When a steel drum band sounds as good as these do then it is something special. Good luck to them and i hope that the future is very positive and rewarding for them.. Regards Mick..........
This is from my country Trinidad and Tobago and being a past steel orchestra performer in my country this is just an honor watching it done from another country. 100% representing Trinidad. Ok now I need to retune my tenor pan lol. You all bringing back the steel pan vibes in.
This was well done. I love the arrangement. It makes me proud to be a citizen of the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is on our tiny island of approximately 1.3 million people that the steelpan was invented. We are also known for our Carnival. We are known for Calypso and Soca music. Bunji Garlin who sang Diffrentology is from Trinidad. Brian Lara the cricketer and world record holder is from Trinidad also. Our most recent sporting hero is Keshorn Walcott he won the gold medal at the olympics in the field of javelin. I love my country. Trinidad and Tobago to the world!
I wish i had schooling like this, 54yrs old now and how things have changed in some schools for the better. Great to see youngsters enjoying something like this together. This is what builds community. Loverly. Well done all of you.
This is one of my favourite songs. I did not know there were so many talented steel drummers who were able to do this magnificent performance. Congratulations to you all!
I'm thrilled to see that in highschools are playing good music. I had some of the most boring songs when I was in the high school band. Challenging to learn to play when the music isn't interesting.
Excellent performance ! I must say, this is the first time in a long time that I can remember when I've seen so many high school students gathered together for this long of a time and not even one of them picked up or even looked a smart phone or mobile device.
That's so so beautiful I absolutely love listening to these kids playing these instruments it's just a real joy to listen to this beautiful music. ♥️❤♥️❤
That was a combination of two of my favorite things...Steel Drums and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Kudos to both the student-performers and the teachers who brought this together! Thank you.
Remember seeing a steel band in our city centre brilliant lively music bringing a sound of the Caribbean to york . Bought one of their cds. Really upbeat music. I like when the saints go marching in.
When The Lion King is a Carribbean Adventure where Simba is a newcomer into the Island and Timon & Pumba walk around sporting dredlocks and Bob Marley TShirts :D that would be awesome
As a DHS grad from the last century who played my trumpet dismally in the marching band of 1961, this video made me proud. You've come a long, long way, DHS musicians, and I complement Ms. Swinderman for helping you on your journey. Bravo!
It is reminding me when I was Young and worried Free! Our High school was very small but I sure enjoyed band. This is so cute! They are all great! Thanks for sharing!
Virginia! I made a new steel drum channel, I hope you enjoy ... no, I guarantee you will enjoy my new Blinding Lights cover! It has crazy editing visuals to complement the sweet pan music. I hope u can tell me what u think!
