Hello and welcome to The Lisbon Layover vlog!
My husband and I chose to have a longer than usual layover in Lisbon so that we could take the time to explore a new country for us! Since we had a 9 hour layover in-between Rome and Toronto, we basically utilized 6 hours for us to explore Lisbon, while giving us enough time to and from the airport. Our luggage was already in the airport waiting to board our future Toronto flight, and so we also wanted to leave our backpacks and any important information at the airport as well, so just outside of the airport there are lockers that are very secure, and not too expensive to rent out. With all our luggage behind us, we were ready to explore! Our first stop was Belém, because I was VERY desperate to check off this bucket list goal of eating the original Pastéis de Belém at the cafe of the same name, essentially these are the freshest, and most delicious egg/custard tarts you can imagine. These tasted so creamy and incredible, it was honestly one of the best sweets I've ever had.. and I've had a lot! We ordered 8 and ate them all, they are served warm and creamy and crispy, then brought back 12 to Toronto! From there we continued to explore a bit of Belém, the port area from the Jerónimos Monastery to Belém Tower. From there we went into the main city of Lisbon and Nikita surprised me by taking me to Pink Street, as well as Green Street. We made reservations ahead of time at this nice rooftop patio restaurant called Noobai that specializes in Portuguese tapas and small bites, which was perfect for us. We then explored more of the Baixa, Chiado & Rossio area, as well as Praca do Comercio. Since we were here I also read great reviews for another Portuguese custard Tate shop called Manteigaria, it was obviously delicious, but the winner is still the Pastéis de Belém for us! There was also a cute Sardines shop, as Lisbon loves their canned fish! This was all so new for us, so many things we saw were a surprise. We wish we had more time in Lisbon, so hopefully we will be back soon. I will say that these 6 hours flew by, but they were also enough to give us a full taste of what this beautiful city has to offer. The people were also very sweet. This was the perfect end to our honeymoon adventure, and I'm so glad we had this spontaneous layover in Lisbon!
