for your wanting to see large distances get Distant Horizons, its great. it saves a lower resolution version of the terrain so you can see for miles. what you see is just a memory of the terrain, so its not actually loaded, so say someone changed a build as you get near to it you'd see it change as the actual terrain loads in, (I did almost hit a building one time do to this as that area used to be empty, but no biggy) and then it updates the memory to reflect the new terrain
