I had the pleasure of working on this. I was in the sound department at HTV at the time and did a lot of the boom mic work. This was the edited version for the US market with the explanation from Micheal Horden of the plot at the beginning and some cuts and editing to the original.
My family and I love this soooo much. I converted the vhs to dvd to share with them years ago. I will continue to watch this and cry at the end for years to come
I thought it had been edited!!! I had this on VHS and thought the scenes were in a different order than when I watched it as a child. It's only because I watched it so much that I knew it was different in places!!
Yes I had the vhs too and the scene with the two snobs was cut out. I didn’t really care for the song but saw some changes too. This was the most magical film for me and my sister we used to go to the video shop and rent this every Friday that the owner eventually gave it to us. We still love this so much and it’s one of my top 3 childhood films. Absolutely charming, sad, magical and unique. A certain authenticity you don’t get anymore. Great casting too. The scene where the little match girl gets the new shoes in her dream, has that been shortened as I believe i remember seeing the actual shoes themselves more clearly. I just got my daughter some sparkly shoes today and it made me think of the ones from this film and I went to check and can barely see them in this version. Thankyou by the way for being a part of such a wonderful film that has been such a part of all our childhoods and adulthoods 😊
My sister and I are thrilled this is available on RU-vid! We rented this VHS by chance from the library in the early 90s. We just kept renewing it so the librarians just told us to keep it. The music is the best!
We taped off the TV, VHS, and watched it every year too. I'm only allowed to watch alone now, my sister moved home to England and nobody else I know has seen it or will watch it with me... I recite the whole movie lol
We own a copy of this on VHS and it has been a tradition at our home for over 15 years to listen to this the night we set up the Christmas tree! The kids have all grown and left the nest but those that live close by still come over to watch this every Christmas season!! As always we have a good cry!
Very good film, the real stark story of children who are neglected, abused, and so fearful of their parents that they'd rather risk being hungry and freeze in the cold, hoping someone comes to rescue them. Great acting too, and soooooo sad.
My nan got into this when I was younger and when she’s noticed me watching it over and over she’s gave me the vhs she had of it saying to Amy love nana… she died not long after. After moving houses I lost the tape.. and find this. Might not have the tape anymore but I have memories of watching this and singing it with her 🥹
the author of the book based this off of a girl he knew in real life, they tried to interview him about it but he would break down crying. my guess is that HE was Arthur, and regrets not being there in her time of need resulting in her death. as evidenced in the scene where shes dyng and keeps shouting out for Arthur and dreaming of him.
I still remember every single song including the words! Favourite song has got to be the saddest one are you an angel I still cry to this day listening and to this!
My favourite film of all time, I have ruined many a VHS re watching it in my childhood and I have passed my love on to my daughter. I am truly for grateful for the memories this provides. Brilliant production, brilliant cast and brilliant songs.
My mum watched this movie all the time as a kid as it was the only vhs she owned and then when I was a kid she found a dvd and we used to watch it together all the time now I come back and watch it on here all the time. One of my all time favourites. Always has me balling at the end.
My nan owned this on VHS and I remember watching it as a child. We lost her back in April and I’ve wanted to watch this for so long I think I will tonight but I know I’m going to need tissues
Meanwhile this week i have seen all the available editions of THE MATCH GIRL. I am sure this is the best because of the presentation , story and Phenomenal songs. When it was released many people didn't had TVs even if some had they cant watch this again and again like i see it today , everyday. This melancholic representation of old cultures , a sad story with sad songs can make anyone depress. Europe is better now , but still in other parts of world many people are facing the same thing or worst even today! I don;t why two people disliked this video , This is so good but not easily available , I even got it after one and half year. Thanks sir - Keith Strachan
@@donnahusbands3635 I’m 25 now. But I had tapes before DVD and I would watch this film during Christmas (sometimes more) but I couldn’t remember the name for a while (No idea why) until lockdown.
Keith this is absolutely gorgeous. Twiggy did such a good job as Josie (great name by the way). I'd love to see Scraps performed on Broadway or something.
In childhood, someone showed me an old used video of this and I am so pleased to find it after all this time! I never forgot the Queen song. Thank you for sharing it 🕯
He has a youtube channel, owns a dance studio out in Spain or something. He's still as charismatic as ever. The little match girl is now an executive assistant at Bloomsbury.
Wow!!!! In all of my 35years, Today I learnt the little match girl died at the end. I’m heartbroken. I used to think she was asleep on her mum and her dad was shouting noOooo because they were out in the cold 🙈 (innocent minds hey)
I loved the film The little match girl. I am sad that they don't show it on T.V at Christmas it would let the children of today realise how lucky they are.
I am directing a production of The Little Match Girl at the Tabard Theatre, Chiswick, London this year (2017) which will be performing from 7 Dec till 31 December. Book now.
i kinda wish a production of this could make it to the US though when you listen to the concept tracks on your site i kinda wish that the film had some of the other songs
I saw an earlier version of this film in the mid 1970s. I can't find the earlier version. It is a very sad story and is still relevent to this day. As today there are thousands of impoverished Big Issue sellers who are trying to make a living selling a magazine in all weather including snow and rain. As well as thousands of destitute beggars on the streets of our towns and cities across the whole of this country. It is a shame that even in 21st century extreme poverty is still with us. But luckily now there are far more charities helping the homeless and destitute. In 1845 when this story was written all there was was the workhouse. Charities for the poor like the Salvation Army were still decades away.
Theres never been a big budget film made of this story. At best theres like a english sub of a dutch dub of a german version of the danish original. But someone should make a big film version for a theatrical release. Id go see it day 1.
Anyone else coming back to watch this because they want Christmas to get here as quick as possible because 2020 sucks and we need to get the new year here like yesterday??
Thank you for sharing this video on RU-vid Keith. I remember seeing it in video as a kid and LOVED it. I think more people should do this musical. captivating songs. love it. :)

Why can't I find the music anywhere? Would love to have the soundtrack on the background while working. Like have the album on Spotify or something. Anyone?
I don't think this is ever happened to anyone. Yesterday i downloaded this movie from here, Tonight i watched this, and was searching for SINGER who sung the song , but i didn't found :(. Then i searched Ms (Natalie morse- THhe match girl) i didnt found about her , where and how is she now. Then I tried to know who made this so good music, at the end of movie I saw name of Music director. Mr Keith Strachan , as it in not common to my native place ( INDIA) , I forgot the name but studied all about him on google :). Today i was commenting on some video , I was posting link to this video and i realized , This video is uploaded by You sir :) , and yes i got update that Keith strachan +1 your comment. I hope you are Fine and well sir, and will make more music. I wish you have more of the good things in your life :).
Is this story meant to be a happy one? Or have the effect of making me cry uncontrollably every time i watch it, bringing me down to my last pack of Kleenex?
Hello Mr. Strachan! I love love love this musical and have been searching for the sheet music/score. Could you please please please tell me how I can get a copy? Best wishes, Cara
This movie saved my childhood and is etched into my happiest memories. Is there a way to find an acoustic version of a song from this? Or a music sheet?
@@keithstrachan9834 I cannot believe I had a reply and never checked. Yes please. The queen of the street, are you an angel and the wedding music. Please and super please and thank you x
Roger Daltrey did such a good job playing the father. I always knew that he could act, especially after seeing him in the Tommy movie, but I never knew that he could do so well in playing such a serious role as the father
That could be true, its hard to feel too sorry for him.he should have manned up and been a better father.it was sooo common back then for women to die during or not long after childbirth.
I liked this movie , was looking for the original lyrics to mistletoe and wine I have done a search on the Internet and every time you search even if you put mistletoe and wine original lyrics it always shows cliff's version and I must admit I like the traditional lyrics, the reason I wanted the lyrics as I am writing a peice about mistletoe and wine and the history of it and I wanted to do a comparison and show what had been changed and what remained has anybody got the full lyrics to it I would be most grateful, thanks for uploading this most enjoyable and sad at the same time you can't beat the classics

This is 1987 Movie made in England, isn't it? The actor/actresses speak British Accent. The story is based on Hans Christian Andersen (Denmark 1805-1875)'s tale.

Hi Streetz Ahead. I would be the one who can provide you permission. Can you post a link to your performing arts crew website so I can discuss this with you privately? Keith
