The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, presented with the stylized title The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure, is a captivating dark ride that draws inspiration from Disney's 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid. This attraction is prominently featured in Paradise Gardens Park within Disney California Adventure and also finds a home in Fantasyland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Park under the name Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, stylized as Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid. The California Adventure version launched on June 3, 2011, followed by the Magic Kingdom opening on December 6, 2012.
Initially, during the 1990s, Walt Disney Imagineering explored the idea of creating a Little Mermaid-themed dark ride for Disneyland Paris and Magic Kingdom, with early considerations for Tokyo DisneySea and Hong Kong Disneyland. Although these early concepts were not realized, a computer-generated preview of the ride was featured on The Little Mermaid's Platinum Edition DVD in 2006.
The eventual realization of the ride at Disney California Adventure was part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate the park during the 2000s, occupying the space of the former Golden Dreams attraction. Similarly, an announcement in September 2009 revealed plans to replace Mickey's Toontown Fair at Magic Kingdom with an expanded Fantasyland that would include a new version of the Little Mermaid ride, mirroring its California counterpart.
The Disney California Adventure attraction underwent a brief closure for maintenance on March 20, 2014. It reopened on May 10, 2014, with significant upgrades, including adding new sea creature figures, an enhanced "Under the Sea" scene, and more realistic features for Ariel and Prince Eric's figures in certain scenes.
Designed to resemble a 20th-century aquarium, the building at Disney California Adventure showcases a King Triton statue, leading guests through a decorated queue to the ride's clamshell vehicles. In contrast, the Magic Kingdom's version features Prince Eric's castle and interactive elements in its queue, offering a different exterior and thematic experience.
Guests at both parks embark in one of 105 Omnimover vehicles shaped like oversized, colorful clamshells. The ride narrates Ariel's story through a blend of music, animatronics, and special effects, including a descent "underwater" and encounters with iconic characters and scenes from the film. The ride culminates in celebrating Ariel and Eric's union, complete with fireworks.
The attraction incorporates 103 standard clamshells and two wheelchair-accessible vehicles, ensuring accessibility for all guests. Danny Troob arranged the memorable scores by Alan Menken for the ride, alongside original vocal performances and new arrangements, bringing the underwater world of The Little Mermaid to life for park visitors.
